Well it’s not money from home then! Now that you mention it, wasn’t there a rumour that the missing southwest passage footage had been recovered? That would make a lot of people here very happy I’m sure.

Is this the same highly requested major feature that was previously said to be announced in January? Or is that a different one yet to come?

That's a fact, not a rumor.

No, this is a different title and I just received confirmation of the license a few days ago!

It seems too good to be true, but I would guess they are two separate films. It seems unlikely that a 'major feature' would also be described as 'incredibly rare'.

For what it's worth, I expect the upcoming announcement will be more of a Small Production. If you catch my drift.

The only alternatives I can think of are either foreign or with Warners.

Just posted the following to the Diamond Wizard thread but covering all bases here...

Just received my Diamond Wizard disc and am watching it now. I'll have more to say about it after I've had a chance to take in the commentary and extras but here's an initial take:

It's (sniff sniff) a disappointment. A FAIL. Such a poor job in light of the more-than-perfect recent I, The Jury blu ray. Now THAT was a great 3D restoration. NOT like this (sniff sniff) subpar piece of dreck. In fact, the only 3D blu ray worth watching (other than the original WB 3D blu rays) is Jury. The only way this restoration should have been allowed to be done BY LAW should have been via an OCN and $500K expenditure under the supervision of frumpy guys over the age of 65. Anything LESS than that and this movie should never have been unleashed on an unsuspecting public! How DARE Kino Lorber and 3DFA offend my eyes this way?!

JUST KIDDING!

It's spectacular!

A remarkable restoration from admittedly imperfect source material. Yes, there's some graininess visible in certain scenes but if you've seen the 4:3 print used on Netflix a few years back you will find this a revelation. Joyously entertaining depth and separation in a number of instances, especially the laboratory scenes.

This is certainly better than this title has looked at least since its original theatrical screenings (which, IIRC, were not even in 3D).

I've pined for this disc for a while; it checks a number of boxes for me:

- Classic 3D: Check
- Noir elements: Check
- Proto-James Bondian elements: Check
- Sci-fi elements: Check
- Oscars-worthy scripting and direction? Who cares??! I'm having fun watching it!!

The first UK 3D feature and I am so glad to have this little piece of history now in my grubby paws.

Now we have blu rays of my two most-desired MGM 3D classics -- this and the breathtakingly stunning Gog restoration -- with a third, Bwana Devil (the one that started this all...) on the way next year.

Can't wait for more.....

Jesse James vs the Daltons?
Great news whatever it is!!! One less feature to worry about getting lost in the abyss and able to be enjoyed by all !!!

Thanks again Bob & Cia for making the release of a lot of these historic films possible.

I'm excited to see any vintage 3D title get preserved properly.
However, I'm hoping the title is Southwest Passage. It's amazing that it was found and that it survives. I'd love to see it get properly preserved and viewed in all it's 3D awesomeness.

I'm really hoping that the title to be announced in January is Money From Home. That is a big studio (Paramount film). Kino says they have potentially one 3D title in their deal. Based on what they have said in the past, it boils down to Money From Home.
Kino said they had a few past Olive titles. They said they had a 3D title. They also said that a title like Flight to Tangier is not possible due to another party holding the film elements.
the only other Paramount title is The Man Who Wasn't There.
While I'd love to have that, the description and hype point more towards a classic Martin and Lewis film.

Hope I'm right!

I haven't checked this thread in a few days and, because of all the new intel that's been posted since the last time, I almost fell over with a heart attack. There's so much more classic 3-D in the pipeline apparently that I've lost count. Ok, my personal copy of THE DIAMOND WIZARD should arrive any day now, BWANA DEVIL and ROBOT MONSTER are coming out next year ... I've lost count after that. We've entered the 3-D Golden Age Part II, it seems, with this embarrassment of riches heading our way. I'm blushing right now I'm so embarrassed.

Anyway, I really enjoyed this quote:

He thought for a moment and said ”Well, seeing it properly makes a BIG difference.”

The notion of assessing the quality of a 3-D film by watching it flat is absurd. Never underestimate the value of seeing a movie as the creative team intended.
Yep, watching a Golden Age 3-D movie flat is like watching Ben-Hur pan-and-scan on a 13-inch B&W TV. It's amazing that Maltin had such a giant change of heart like that, but it just goes to show the power of seeing these films properly. By the way, I've never seen DANGEROUS MISSION and am holding out with the hope that Warner allows the 3-D Film Archive to restore it. That would be great!

I have added the info about your confirmation of the discovery of the missing reels in the UK to the Wikipedia entry for Southwest Passage in the Notes section.

I have a field sequential 3D DVD of DANGEROUS MISSION which I converted to above/below to run with my 3D projector. It is wonderful. Same with SECOND CHANCE and some other titles. Regardless, I'm with Henri Langlois. Save everything we can. Especially now when we have the 3DFA.

We should start a petition that requests all major television manufacturers to begin including a 3-D option in all of their products. We should also, simultaneously, start another petition that requests Warner Brothers to release more of its Golden Age 3-D classics on Blu-ray. Within that petition, we should request that WB considers using the services of the 3DFA to restore the films. We should point to the high quality of the many 3-D films released over the years that were restored by the archive as testament to what is possible. The petitions could be circulated together as a team. An impressive number of signatures could make it happen.

This has been another great year for classic ('50s thru '80s) 3D fans.

There already is a petition with LG and they have over 22,000 signatures. They are not interested.

Wow, 70 years since the dawn of the first 3-D craze! Never in a bazillion years could I have ever dreamed that I’d be able to see and own all these stereoscopic classics in proper pristine polarized format. I’m one lucky sonofabitsch, thanks to the tireless efforts of Bob, Greg, Jack, and Thad, the Fab Four of 3-D.
