A hearty congrats to the 3D Film Archive for 2 consecutive sellouts at New York City's Film Forum (Saturday's 3D Rarities with the additional Nat King Cole footage and Monday Sangaree with Arlene Dahl in attendance). There was a 15 minute prologue filmed interview with Ms. Dahl and she was gracious enough to greet the audience afterwards. Mssrs. Furmanek, Kintz, Theakston and Komorowski were applauded as they were intro'd by Film Forum's Foster Hirsch (who conducted the filmed interview).

It’s not often that you can preserve a 65-year-old movie and have the leading lady attend your restoration premiere. That just happened in New York City with our sold-out showing of SANGAREE at the Film Forum!

From left to right; Jack Theakston, Thad Komorowski, Greg Kintz and Bob Furmanek with the amazing and legendary Arlene Dahl.

We are busier than ever and thank you everyone for your interest and support of our restoration work. We are delighted to announce that we can confirm at least four – and possibly five – vintage 3-D gems for release in 2019.

You can look forward to a busy year on Blu-ray from the 3-D Film Archive!

You can look forward to a futuristic year on Blu-ray from the 3-D Film Archive!

First off, it's completely awesome that Arlene Dahl attended that New York presentation. It must have been something else for her to get the chance to watch Sangaree in 3-D on the big screen again after all of these years.

Secondly, you have really piqued, I'm certain, the interest of everybody who loves classic 3-D movies with your confirmation of at least four or possibly five 3-D gems getting released on Blu-ray in 2019.

And thirdly, your "futuristic year" hint really has me wondering what the archive has up its sleeve.

Ms. Dahl said that she enjoyed the 3D more than she thought she would - and more than she remembered. She said the process and the way it was used 'brought the film to life.'

And she's right!

Default "Futuristic Year"?

Some way out speculations about that:

"Cat Women of the Moon" --- While Wade Williams owns and physically possesses the OCN, the film is actually in public domain. Perhaps a print or other element from a private collector or even UCLA or the Library of Congress.

"Spacehunter/Forbidden Zone" ---- Wouldn't we all love to have that!

Anybody else have some wild guesses?

Over at the HTF site I guessed the following:
  1. Jivaro
  2. Roadshow version of The Bubble
  3. Nudie-Cuties double feature THE BELLBOY AND THE PLAYGIRLS and ADAM AND 6 EVES
  4. The Diamond Wizard
  5. The possible fifth title might be El Corazon y la Espada included in 3D Rarities II, with subtitles or dubbed.

Bob responded that it would actually be five definite titles maybe six. The six title could be a western that Bob mentioned a while ago.

Oh, so now we're up to six!?

You know, I just noted in a different thread about Wade Williams' website being down, and that he hasn't posted anything on his Facebook page since early October. Maybe he made a deal finally?

We know one of the movies will be Jivaro, and that is one I cannot wait to watch. Because of the deal Kino made with Universal, I would guess Taza and/or Wings of the Hawk could be included in the five (or six) gems. The roadshow version of The Bubble could certainly be one of the films, and that fits the "futuristic" bill. Spacehunter also fits that bill and would definitely be a treat. Cat Women of the Moon and/or Robot Monster would also fit the bill of "futuristic."

We'll find out all in good time. Hopefully, there will be some announcements coming soon.

Regarding the Universal westerns I hope you nailed it.

Spacehunter would be a real pleasant surprise because Columbia (like Warners and Fox) is one of those studios that heretofore has insisted on doing any 3D masters in-house (presumably for security/asset-protection reasons) and presenting the finished masters to its blu ray distribution partner(s). Columbia has distribution deals with two indies (that I know of): Twilight Time and Mill Creek, the latter which issued a flat/2D version of Spacehunter last year. Unless some decisions and relationships have changed, I'd be quite surprised if the "futuristic" content Bob is referring to were Spacehunter... though it would be great if it were.

Speaking of that flat Spacehunter release Columbia/Mill Creek issued last year: On Amazon's ranking of sci-fi blu rays it's only selling slightly better at the moment than the 2016 3D blu ray release of its micro-budgeted contemporary Metalstorm. Safe bet Spacehunter would be selling far better than the highly inferior Metalstorm had it too been issued in 3D.

Indicator Powerhouse also has a deal with Columbia/Sony, and their releases have been nothing short of stellar. Although they're from the UK, most of their Sony releases have been region free. In fact, some of the Mill Creek titles have been released by Indicator and featured tons of extras not included on the Mill Creek releases. It would be great if the 3-D Film Archive and Indicator were working on things together.

I'm still holding out hope that Warner Archive finally gets in the game and starts releasing some Golden Age 3-D. I also hope somebody releases Gorilla At Large in 3-D, finally.

There's hope that overseas distributors might be a workaround to US obstacles to certain classic 3D releases (such as the music-rights issue with Universal's The Glass Web). That said, 3D Film Archive has a relationship with Universal but none (that we know of yet) with Columbia (for Spacehunter) or Fox (for Gorilla at Large).

As for Gorilla at Large, Twilight Time's Nick Redman, on "another" board, indicated it could be a long wait indeed for Fox to cough up a 3D master given all the transitioning to Disney ownership. (To his credit, Nick says he will not bother issuing a 2D of Gorilla even if provided by the studio.) Twilight Time of course has a deal with Fox as well, and it's thru their deal with Sony/Columbia that that studio provided a finished 3D master of Mad Magician for Twilight Time release, and of course that's been selling like gangbusters -- underscoring the wisdom of 3D-or-Go-Home decisions when it comes to blu ray releases of classic 3D titles.

Another eagerly awaited title is Bwana Devil. What a treat that would be to see after a 3-D Film Archive restoration.

Anyway, all this discussion about classic 3-D has me all revved up. A nice double feature of The Maze and Gog sounds nice for tonight.

Whoever guesses it gets a gold star. A pie would also be a nice prize.

Just kidding! It's really Parasite, dubbed the first "futuristic" monster movie in 3-D!
