Maybe there is something here that I am missing but two questions come to mind:

1. Would you think it is advisable to let the OCN of a 50 yer old movie through a scanner twice ? I cannot really see this being done due to the wear and tear associated with a scan so at best it might be possible with newer films where it does not apply that much however as we will not encounter too much warped or deformed material that in theory would profit much more from multiple passes.

2. What would be gained by multiple scans in different resolutions?
I would be very surprised if interpolating between a 2k and a 4k scan would yield a more detailed result than interpolating between 2 4k scans wth all other conditons being equal. I am with RAH and would think that with mutliple scans one would average DOWN in the direction of the lowest resolution used.

It's a good interview. RR is an old timer and not into the new extra features.

It looks more to me like the writers at USA Today need to re-write their phony baloney headline.

Redford wasn't really bashing the Blu-ray format at all. He was critical of the kind of documentary extras that are featured on DVD as well as Blu-ray. His argument is that it kind of takes some of the "magic" out of the film. It's the same reason Spielberg uses on why he doesn't do director's commentary tracks.

With the mainstream press being so prone to sensationalism it has to seize on any opportunity to emphasize controversy -which basically translates to the press telling half-truths, outright lies and insulting the intelligence of readers in the process. The quality of journalism these days is just downright pathetic. There's little integrity at the professional level and "amateur hour" in the form of various 'blogs and what not is grabbing more territory. With so many newspapers failing or teetering on the brink of ruin the problems with journalism are worsening.

Yeah, I was also annoyed at the headline when I finally finished reading it, very misleading

Wow. I guess I haven't seen any photos of Robert Redford for awhile. Is that a publicity shot?

Penton, I will be at the Cut on the 13th at 7 PM, in Vegas, if you want to stop by and say hello.
Well, that’s interesting about the multiple rejections, maybe that‘s what Jeff’s sources were referring and relaying to him about the project. If I recall correctly, Jay Chumley (when he moved onto Giant Inter) authored your calibration disc, no? Good people, they presented at the last Blu-Con (2.0)

Thanks for the invite.
We’ll see. I’m going with my wife and our dog so, I’ve got to carefully budget my time.

It might interest many of you. The bottom line is that 709 is broken. It is sort of half a standard. It fails to define the display gamma. The pdf in the link above was done based off of a lot of research.

With any luck, this will replace 709 in the future.
I received the correspondence about his proposal but, I haven’t had the opportunity to read the entire document(s) yet.

Yes, the electro-optical conversion function should have been specified years ago. Actually, Kris and I previously had a short discussion on this very thread about its lack of standardization amongst studios/content providers.
Last Feb., Charles also gave a fine presentation in Rancho Las Palmas on HDR imaging during which he candidly expressed his dissatisfaction with BT.709 in no uncertain terms. So, this comes as no surprise.

If folks are uncertain what ‘SMPTE’ is and what the Standards Committees do, then run the featured video for some background here…………..

Yeah, I feel like Bobby, Blu, and Q!, the headline is misleading concerning RR’s feelings about the high definition home media format known as Blu-ray.

On a more pleasant note, I’m told that yesterday or perhaps Wed., “Extra” and/or “ET” when they mentioned a certain movie coming out this week, for the first time said something like “Catch it on Blu-ray” rather than the typical “Catch it on DVD” slogan.

Don't know if it's correct in terms of "a first" with Blu-ray superseding and outright replacing "DVD" in their promotion of that particular home media product but, sounds good to me.

I haven't seen the features on it for a while, but the newly created CG were mostly to fix some errors, right? Not because they needed cosmetic touch ups, or anything?

I'm still hesitating, actually. I saw that the seminar took place from 9.30 to 5.00. Does that mean that it's one consecutive thing, or several repeated seminars after each other? I'm afraid I'd have to pass if it starts at 9.30, cause I don't think I could make that.
And would you be there as well?

He's from the old school. Woody Allen films have no extras because he doesn't believe in them. I would say that as a filmmaker he absolutely likes Blu-ray because it makes his movies look their best at home. But as a filmmaker he doesn't like all the geejaws that can distract people from his film either.

Well, if you want to attend primarily to gain insights into Metropolis……….

that will be presented during the afternoon (1:30 – 5:00 P.M.) session. I’m not sure if the schedule is up yet online.

Anyway, if that’s all you're interested in to give you some background on the restoration prior to viewing the upcoming Blu-ray product, you can pretty much skip the morning session and come after you eat lunch.

No, I won’t be attending in Amsterdam. I’ll be busy that entire week leading up to the Digital Cinema Summit and the rest of NAB. Hiroshi Yoshioka will be delivering the show’s keynote during which some 3D clips of golf…..I say GOLF, DenonCI are planned to be exhibited.

P.S.
I didn’t even realize you’re from the Netherlands, which I assume? Those folks are absolutely fan-atic when they go to the Tour de France. I think they must be the single ‘happiest’ contingent which attends, year in and year out….in terms of people from different countries.

For the record, I have just seen the Citizen Kane of Hot Tub-oriented Time travel movies... Not sure it's a must own on BD, but, well, it knew what it wanted to be, and that's got to count for lots.

The schedule only says there will be seminars from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM, so that's why I asked.
And yeah, I'm from the Netherlands. They're pretty fanatic about the Tour de France (especially now it opens here this year) but soccer (or football ) is the national sport here. If you go to any World or European championship, it's hard to notice the many folks dressed up in orange. I've always heard that foreigners definitely know when the Dutch are there (and not in a bad way either).

Denon CI, if you can't make it NAB,- check it out at home or your local establishment which does have access.........
