I’ve pretty much deleted from my grey matter memory everything associated with VC-1 or the rival codecs of that time. With regards to AV1, I think the film grain synthesis is a pretty good feature for those who employ that codec because you can just figure that if there wasn’t this option, the streaming content deliverers would simply DNR the content to death to save on bandwidth. There are comparative subjective quality results/pics pointed out by Andrey at about the 23 min. timestamp of that above linked video to show the value of their film grain synthesis.

I'm misremembering re: the codec but the common link is HD DVD: something called Film Grain Technology by Thomson was actually added to the spec e.g. https://www.engadget.com/2006/07/06/...d-dvd-finally/

Not that I think such a concept wouldn't be useful to have around - it'd be amazing if there was an on/off toggle so people could watch the DNR'ed version if they so pleased - I just hope it gains more traction than the HD DVD iteration did!

The film grain synthesis process for the new codec AV1 is being introduced by the streaming community (Netflix, YouTube), who are motivated to compress at the lowest bitrates possible in order to save on bandwidth with their non-physical media delivery methods. For example, one of the taglines for the recently concluded Picture Coding Symposium 2018 (https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...t#post15176010) was –

“How will we stream a perfectly crisp 4K-HDR-WCG episode of Chef’s Table without requiring a 25 Mbps broadband connection?”

^ Dang good viewership for a summer holiday get-away month. I'm not here to score points for HD DVD, just remarking that this isn't the first go-around for such re-graining technology (which as a tool by itself I wish could be built into every player, **** that noise reduction, I want a noise additioner with various vintages of grain to choose from) and that I hope it gets better mileage this time around.

If it was such a daffy thing back then it's just as daffy now, and both implementations are in service of mediums which have less than stellar bandwidth, funnily enough.

I think Deluxe entertainment services group people, especially those with years of experience (carry-overs from GDMX) can also hold their own in terms of video compression and authoring.

No doubt on Belgium v. Japan. As to Brasil v. Mexico, I thought 1st half was dyno-mite. 2nd half, less so, because Mexico couldn't maintain that frantic pace. Brasil looked so much better than four years ago.
