A tech piece on it is here https://hopa.memberclicks.net/assets...gt_hpa2006.PDF which is why I'm not wowed by a new mention of pretty much the same thing over a decade later. Not that I think such a concept wouldn't be useful to have around - it'd be amazing if there was an on/off toggle so people could watch the DNR'ed version if they so pleased - I just hope it gains more traction than the HD DVD iteration did! |

The film grain synthesis process for the new codec AV1 is being introduced by the streaming community (Netflix, YouTube), who are motivated to compress at the lowest bitrates possible in order to save on bandwidth with their non-physical media delivery methods. For example, one of the taglines for the recently concluded Picture Coding Symposium 2018 (https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...t#post15176010) was –
“How will we stream a perfectly crisp 4K-HDR-WCG episode of Chef’s Table without requiring a 25 Mbps broadband connection?” P.S. You remember this engadget article from thee old days? - https://www.engadget.com/2006/07/06/...ay-it-fake-it/ (HD DVD had less bandwidth capability as well as smaller disc capacity as compared to the Blu-ray format). You’re welcome
since then -> https://variety.com/2018/digital/new...ls-1202818029/ , the Variety article is a little misleading/incomplete in the sense that the several redbox kiosks that stock ‘4K UHD’ discs as pictured on this and the last page are actually located well over 30 miles away (and in a different county, to boot) than Los Angeles. |

Calculating the viewership numbers for the month of June for this thread…..
1,255,502 - 1,158,330 (from May…. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...y#post15125932 , i.e. May figured in at ~ 68,300 views ) __________ = 97,172 views for the HDR Discussion Thread for June ^ Dang good viewership for a summer holiday get-away month. Keep in mind though, for July, many of us take vacations (including me, and I don’t post when I’m on holiday), so don’t be at surprised if maybe the viewership total for July drops some…. unless other members fill in to carry on, because the numbers show that similar to this vintage commercial, when the HDR Discussion thread talks…..people listen - |

PS If it was such a daffy thing back then it's just as daffy now, and both implementations are in service of mediums which have less than stellar bandwidth, funnily enough. |

I think Deluxe entertainment services group people, especially those with years of experience (carry-overs from GDMX) can also hold their own in terms of video compression and authoring.

To those who may have missed it live, I would suggest you see if you can catch a tape delayed rebroadcast, as this match is definitely must-see TV at its finest! ![]() |

UFC 226 will be in 4K HDR on DirecTV. First ever MMA event in HDR.
It's too bad Canada is so far behind. No HDR for us yet. |
