People (although not admitting it) were much more skeptical of 3D at home because of wearing-the-glasses factor.
4K is rather effortless compared to that.

Peter, maybe the pics in the above post will get you interested in soccer.

Our Webmaster rocks ….https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=12357 Admittedly, I read his news posts and some other sections of this forum several days late.

But anyway, to add to the Blu-ray.com news item linked above ^, American Hustle boosts a 4K DI. I’ll post the specifics (file size, etc.) of the DCP on this thread (4K Movie Releases) around the time of its release to local theaters this coming Christmas season.

Stay tuned.

B.T.W., some real world information which you won’t find in the DCS spec nor on any consumer audio/video forum and to show that we here are not unduly biased by every and all things ‘4K’.

A little known fact is that in the mastering process, sometimes the 4K layer ( https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...er#post7684634 ) robs bits from the 2K layer of the DCP so, the quality playback of a 4K DCP from a 2K projector may not be as good as exhibiting just a 2K DCP…if one had been produced and were available.

Don’t expect Hollywood movie studio 4K distributors to reveal this ^, but some DCP encoding software independents might.

And many industry folks believe sports will drive 4K TV adoption. For the very reason of live broadcast football, soccer and other similar sports with moving people and objects, the ITU included HFR in the Rec. 2020.
Agreed, but if it's not going to auto switch back and forth, based on the content type, it's going to be terrible. No one, especially a neophyte user, wants to go deep into the menu to change this for each program.

Just as an FYI, I picked this up from some trade journal somewhere (forgot which - it might have been the SMPTE newsletter):

Quote:
The first track will be relevant in the near future, making it feasible for hardware manufacturers to make UHDTV televisions that consumers can use both to improve their current high-definition viewing experience, and for eventually viewing content with four times the resolution of 1080p material. That track, referred to as UHD-1, is also called Ultra HD in the U.S. by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). Wood describes UHD-1 as "the equivalent of four progressively scanned HD pictures stitched together. We use 1080p HD as the building block for UHDTV."

The second track or quality level is called UHD-2, or Super High Vision in Japan. Wood describes UHD-2 as "not 4 HD pictures, but 16 1080p pictures stitched together--sometimes it's called an 8K system." "Four times and 16 times are not chance numbers," he adds. The actual value of increasing the definition that you see in the picture is proportional to the square root of the increase in the number of pixels. So you need a square law as you jump equal quality levels. The first step, HD to UHD-1, is roughly the same as the quality step when we went from SD to HD, though it is not quite as simple as that statement suggests. Then, we go from UHD-1 to UHD-2 with the same size step. But, again, it's a bit more complex, because the quality steps we see depend on other parameter values, as well."

Arguably, television manufacturers who want to sell higher resolution televisions to consumers as soon as possible, rather than wait until processing equipment and displays are sufficiently equipped to handle UHD-2 images are driving UHD-1 today. That could take until about 2020 to happen, Wood estimates. He points out that Japan Broadcasting Corp. (NHK) is currently planning to make the 2020 Tokyo Olympics a watershed moment for the broadcast of 8K UHD-2 images. So, one question facing broadcasters is "when is the best time to start something like this--now, or wait 'X' years time until you have the next-step technology?"

True.

I think the current team is so weak, I can't see us reaching quarters to be honest Geoff.

That ‘Wood’ be this ‘Wood’ from last August. Run the YouTube clip if you haven't yet…https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ow#post8058695

And he’s presenting at 10:30 A.M. (Technical track) on Monday, scroll down for more details -

ATTENTION cnet journalists, I strongly recommend attending the 9:30 A.M. presentation to learn why your referenced (and often quoted by laypersons) ‘chart’ is flawed ( http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-33199_7...-still-stupid/ )...but I do like the different colored triangles.

Not really, I just really don't fancy us next year. We will struggle with most teams with the average team we have IMO

Perhaps this year but, it just seems to me that England is better than their past World Cup results. I almost think it’s a mental thing with them and they *freeze up* during the tournament. Your players compete each week in the Premier league against many world class players of different nationalities and perform very well on the English stage.

I just wish English players would play in the World Cup like they play (with the same mental attitude) that they do week in and week out in the Premier League and I think they would enjoy better results….and maybe even be a bit more entertaining in the process.

What is an example of a “DCP encoding software independent”?

Well, there are many out there competing for your dollar but, one example would be…. http://www.magnamana.com/products/finaldcp/

Or…. if attending does not fit into your schedule, then I would recommend studying this lecture, i.e. the “basic biology” to professionals who possess at least one doctorate is that humans don’t just *see* with Snellen visual acuity. There is much more to ‘seeing’ than that….http://arapaho.nsuok.edu/~salmonto/v.../Lecture21.pdf

This concept was proven with results during testing by NHK investigators with imagery projected on displays to unbiased observers (at least 50 participants) and subsequently published in SMPTE journal after that chart with the colored triangles made its appearance.

How do I know such things? Because I stay informed regarding many aspects of vision science even before history-making devices dealing with vision become approved - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...sc#post6848325
