Nope not a fake. Criterion's discs are manufactured in Mexico now like many other discs from different studios and labels.

Making myself a new rule: Never ever look at the comment section for the upcoming Criterion announcements ever again

To be honest I don't think I ever saw a sticker that did not say Disc Made in Mexico.

I thought I read somewhere that there are no replication plants in the US anymore.

I may have known, and since forgot: why do they have to state where the discs are made? Is it law? Do they also need to state where the inserts are printed?

I really hope criterion can put out more Hong Kong films like a Jackie Chan or John Woo box-set and some fantasy epics like Zu warriors and the Bride with white hair

Definitely hope so. I think The Killer is going to definitely be in the collection since it's owned by Fortune Star. Hard Boiled is owned by a different company (I'm guessing Mei Ah since they released it in Taiwan which is Region A) but I'm hoping they'll lend it over to Criterion as I think it's the right choice.

Also hoping A Chinese Ghost Story and A Better Tomorrow is going to be part of the collection. Yeah, Hong Kong films aren't necessarily essential films but damn, they're so fun to watch that I still think it's just one of those countries that are fun to watch and ones that a lot of people may end up liking.

Once Upon a Time in China and some of the Stephen Chow films will be a great choice too, hoping for Love on Delivery and the Chinese Odyssey series.

I'm not too sure if Criterion is interested in releasing these so I'm going to try to keep my hype down for now but I'm hoping they'll be releasing some cult films like they did in the earlier days (Excluding ones that have Blu-ray releases like Robocop and Dead Ringers).

I'm still let down that we didn't get Memories of Murder and Wong Kar-wai boxset before the year ends. It was also a miss opportunity to finally give us a proper restore version of City of Lost Children for the 25th anniversary unless Sony has something in plans for that movie. Oh well, I'm still happy that Crash got picked up for the people who don't have 4K TVs and players.

Not to mention, having it on their streaming service will introduce it for a wider audience that has never seen the movie.

Hopefully you see this...

I just found one that seems to have potential.

https://www.reddit.com/r/TrueFilm/

Not a plug or endorsement - I have nothing to do with it - I just found it, but it seems to be more in line with what you (and I) are looking for.

Also, if you search "Criterion Film Club" within the r/Criterion subreddit, there are great discussions every week (as I think I mentioned before).

According to comments Kino said someone picked up the rights to The Killer and Harboiled, and I'm pretty sure it's a safe bet that it's probably Criterion. Could be Film Movement/Arrow/Shout!, but I'm betting it's Criterion.

Thanks! I'll look into it. I'm almost done with writing my own personal essay about The Leopard (1963) so I might post it there. Very glad that there is actually a film discussion subreddit!

Be glad. Warner Brothers used facilities in Canada for DVDs and many of those releases are completely unplayable now, a malady that has been traced to the years they were manufacturing discs in Canada. The conclusion by the studio was that the only discs not showing any issues at all were Made In Mexico.

Where were those WB discs made, that there were many pages worth of people trying to figure out if their copies were victim of the rot? I don't remember the common factor except they were pressed dics from a certain year range of release. Also because I haven't found copies of mine with the rot (not that I looked that well, unfortunately most of mine are stacked - yeah I know).

Can you direct me to where Kino said that? You couldn't imagine how much I want a 4K remaster for those! Oh, and for what it's worth Hong Kong Rescue said they were going to try a 4K scan for Bullet to the Head 35mm.

Don't know if this is the case, but I suspect it's because of NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) regulations.

In a thread over at HTF, some folks indicate that the problem plant was the Cinram plant in Olyphant, Pennsylvania, which Warner used up until 2010. The problem discs are mostly in the 2005-2009 range. Apparently, there were also some problems with the Cinram plant in Toronto.

It was in the Kino thread, maybe two months ago? Someone asked them if they would consider releasing The Killer and Hardboiled on Blu-ray and they said they would love to, but someone beat them to the punch recently and acquired the rights.

Actually it was on Twitter. Here is what they said exactly "Again, we would love to release them, but last we heard they were both with another label, who'll most likely release them on Blu-ray, but not 4K."

https://twitter.com/KLStudioClassic/...53465917849600

The not 4K, but Blu-ray make me think it's Criterion.

Ah, thank you. Yes that makes me think it is Criterion as well. Can they hurry up if they're doing it! I've been waiting years for proper releases of these outstanding thrillers.
