Cool. Would be interested to hear your experience if you do end up going.

I wish Criterion would release Sin Nombre on BD. No region A release yet so why not?

Anyone else ever compare LA HAINE to Larry Clark's Kids?

Rare titles that I'd like to see are The Innocents and Dead of Night. Really enjoyed the former and each time I record Dead of Night, my DVR crashes and it seems to play once a year.

The Sweet Smell of Success - SCANITY Film Scanner in 4K resolution from the original 35mm camera negative

Looks like Anatomy of a Murder got the same treatment as The Last Picture Show, which doesn't really surprise me, since Sony was initially going to release the BBS box set themselves, but gave it to Criterion instead.
Thanks for posting that, good information indeed.

I recently purchased the digibook edition of Easy Rider and did an A/B test to see how it stcaked up against the Criterion box set BD. IMO they looked nearly identical. Has anyone else done a comparison of these two releases?

I LOVE Kids. It's an excellent snapshot of inner city life duing the 90's. In a lot of ways it remined me of me and my friends.

It would be a happy day for me to see Kids and Gummo get BD releases. I could honestly see Kids becoming part of the Criterion collection, as its theme and raw feel would be right at home with a "wacky C" on the cover.

Gummo, on the other hand, would be a long shot.

I know this may not be Criterion related but I am sure more than one will find it interesting...

http://www.fadedrequiem.com/zoetrope...eur_theory.pdf

It is the essay written by Andrew Sarris back in 1962 where he definied in his own words what he thought was the Auteur Theory and in what consisted. I have always been quite fascinated by this "theory" developed during the early years of the French New Wave. What do you think about it? Some may call it a joke while other may find it insightful. In a way, I kind of agree with Sarris but at the same time there are things I disagree on . I can admit I like "auteur" cinema more but that just from the point of view of a general body of work. I always find it interesting when a director constantly tries to capture certain ideas in every film while being widely different from each other.

There's already a (region B) blu of The Innocents by BFI. And I'd bet BFI or another British company do Dead of Night before Criterion.

It'd be great if someone does a good presentation of Dead of Night.

a.) I'm not interested in buying a region free player or just buying another player to crack it to import The Innocents. I want it but importing would be more expensive than I'm looking to buy into.

b.) Never say never with Dead of Night. Either way, don't just release it region B.

Nope, I only bought the BBS version, because Easy Rider is my 5th favourite film out of the 7th film set (Head, Five Easy Pieces, King of Marvin Gardens, and The Last Picture Show appeal to me more).

This talk of The Innocents reminds me that I do need to import it, I've been slack on my UK imports because of my personal limit I'm imposing on how many BDs I buy, and there's been too many NA releases coming out I kike more. I still haven't upgraded my copy of The Graduate yet to the Studio Canal version.

A cheap region free player is more than worth it, as I was able to get an OOP in NA Disney BD, Sleeping Beauty for about 18 bucks Canadian, brand new. I was also able to get Withnail and I, with more bonus features than the NA release.

The Innocents will definitely make it into my cart one of these orders. It's been taunting me in the wish list and it's only a matter of time before I succumb.

I rather enjoyed the MGM release of The Graduate. What would prompt me to upgrade? (That's 100% question and 0% challenge, btw...I know nothing about the SC release).

As for a cheap region free player being worth it - absolutely no doubt about it yes. I can certainly sympathize with people who say they don't want to spend more money on yet another device that will let them import relatively expensive foreign titles they're on the fence about in the first place.

That makes perfect sense to me. But just being able to splurge on locked titles has made browsing them a lot more fun. I haven't gone overboard purchasing them, mind you but I really like having the ability to at least consider them now. And I was able to greet the news of MoC's upcoming Double Indemnity release with complete delight - no mixed feelings or trepidation.

It's a really nice upgrade.

I think it's most definitely Criterion-related. I'm a big believer in auteur theory (or "arteur" if you go by a misguided dude from a college screenwriting course I took several years ago).

I'd much rather watch a film that's a misfire (e.g. Topaz- Hitchcock) from an auteur than one that is hollow and vapid. Even though Topaz isn't a great film it still has flashes of brilliance in it.

I think Criterion bases many of their selections around auteur theory (consciously or not) as they place a great emphasis on director.

I'm inclined to agree with you, especially when you look at the emphasis they place on certain directors: Bergman, Kurosawa, and Malle, in particular, on BD. I'm also more inclined to check out a film directed by Billy wilder, rather than Michael Bay, based on their other outputs. Normally I look at a film for plot, but often the director and/or an actor will sway me to choose that film over another one.

See, I need to cut back on my BD spending, as I have other things that are more pressing, such as getting a new car in two years. I need to start saving for it now. I also need to renew my registration and insurance on the car I have now, and other "adult" things. I haven't even started RRSPs yet, and I really should.

I do agree with you that having the ability to buy region locked titles is great, but like you, I've only bought a few so far. I remember paying 100 bucks for a LG DVD player (which still works despite the huge dent in the top near the disc tray from all the moving I've done with it) that was region free/PAL capable in 2005. It's even cheaper to get BDs and a BD player now, especially with the exchange being so much better.

The BFI release of The Innocents is outstanding. A/V presentation is top notch and the disc includes some very good supplements. (the short film titled "The Bespoke Overcoat" is almost worth the price of the BD alone)

Be sure to read the Blu-ray.com forum about the film though, apparently the disk has some playback issues in some players.

I received my Valentines Day sale order yesterday and I watched "Life During Wartime' last night. Is it me or is the PQ & AQ horrendous

I had to turn it up so high to get a clear sound of the dialogue & the picture looks like a 4th generation VHS that was computer digitalized

The first time I've been so disappointed in a Criterion release. The master can't be that bad, its a newer film. Or was this supposed to be this bad?? Anyone?
