Wow so I should consider myself lucky I got the empty digipak of Man Who Fell To Earth for $17 then huh? I just ordered the UK for $23 so that'll satisfy me. The U.S disc isn't worth $60+ too me lol

Would it help if everyone pitched in $1 for taking multiple hits for the team?

hold on.. did I misunderstand something here? you just bought your 3rd copy of the same film (Repo Man)?

and yet people who pay more than retail for an OOP title are "insane?" I seriously doubt that you are capable of deriving more pleasure with 3 copies of one film (a still in print title, mind you) versus somebody who might have paid twice retail for one OOP title.

here's what I paid for my 3 OOP Melville titles:
Army of Shadows - $33.98 brand new
Leon Morin, Priest - $19.99 (like new.. ended up getting 6 bucks refunded back to me as the disc has a clean but unsightly and unnecessary "used" sticker on the back, so I paid $14.)
Le Cercle Rouge - $62.98 brand new (would have liked to do better... can't win 'em all)

I hope that they keep the original cover art, because I love the subtle unease that it generates. I'm sure that they'll come up with something creative if they give it an overhaul, though.
I've mentioned before, but I have a soft spot for The Talented Mr. Ripley which I think is a tremendously well acted film with beautiful cinematography and a great adaptation. That is my fav non-Hitch Hitch. Very under appreciated film, IMO.

Shallow Grave deserves a spot in the team picture, too
[Show spoiler]with all the macabre details in which they bury the body.

Outside of these two and The Vanishing, does anybody else have a favorite or a must see non-Hitch Hitch?

I paid $41.95 for a new copy of Army of Shadows and got a great deal from a fellow poster here for a new, never been opened/still in the shrink wrap copy of Le Cercle Rouge for something like $35ish shipped IIRC.

Leon Morin, Priest never really interested me from the description but I might check it out eventually.

About 14 years ago, I purchased this Fox Lorber DVD...

I watched this DVD for a while before I double-dipped for the Criterion DVD during the mid-2000s.

The Vanishing was not my first Criterion DVD, because my first two or three Criterions were Kurosawa films. I'm pretty sure that it was my third or fourth Criterion DVD purchase, though.
The studio would never let Hitchcock make a film like The Vanishing. Then again, restraints and codes are sometimes good as they encourage creativity and subtlety.

Haneke's Cache or Donen's Charade would be two that stick out for me.

Anybody else think that a TV series inspired by the Tom Ripley character would be a good idea?

It really surprised me. I didn't expect to like it as much as I did. In my CC top 5, actually.

Melville made 13 films - 5 of them are on Region A blu-ray.
5 more are definitely good enough to merit a blu-ray release from somebody.
Les Enfants Terribles is streaming on Hulu.
In addition to Le Doulos, Magnet of Doom stars Jean-Paul Belmondo, so I hope to come across that at some time.
That leaves only 1 film somewhat unlikely to be seen - Quand tu liras cette lettre

Wait until the the addiction takes hold. You'll find yourself REALLY wanting a film and paying over retail price to get it.

Yes, I agree 100% with both Charade (1963) and Cache; both are amazing flicks.

I saw Charade for the first time about two years back. Superb thriller, and if I didn't know otherwise I would have sworn this film was directed by Hitchcock, since it had all of the elements of a good Hitch film,
[Show spoiler]i.e. a suspenseful story, espionage, a great fight scene on a rooftop, a chase scene in a train station, people passing away mysteriously, and a final story twist that truly caught me by surprise.
Also, the Cary Grant character in this film reminded me a lot of his character in North by Northwest, i.e. a wise-cracker who made jokes even in the face of danger.

Re: Cache, I remember seeing this in the theater back in the 200X's. Excellent, extremely suspenseful film;
[Show spoiler]I didn't "get" the ending at all on my first viewing; when I re-watched it on DVD the connection was explained to me in one of the docs. When I first saw this in the theatre, I didn't notice the two sons conferring outside the school (since they were in a huge crowd); presumably, they had set everything up, since it was obvious that both respective parents (the mother and father of the younger kid, and the father of the older one) were completely ignorant re: who was sending the tapes. Quite creepy.

Re: The Talented Mr. Ripley, I liked this when I saw it in the theater. However, after reading the excellent novel by Patricia Highsmith, I've grown to dislike the film. The novel is superbly written & very well done.
[Show spoiler]The film, however, changes a lot of elements around: In the novel, Marge (G. Paltrow in the film) is not engaged to D. Greenleaf, but is instead more of a casual girlfriend, somewhat dowdy (not blonde & cute). So, there is no scene when Marge has an emotional meltdown, thinking that Ripley offed Greenleaf (as in the film); the character in the book doesn't seem to care much that he dissapeared. And, the Cate Blanchett character is completely absent in the novel. Last but not least, the #%^ subtext is not nearly as obvious in the novel. In essence, they changed so much of the story that, IMHO, the whole point of the novel is lost. I wish I had read the novel before seeing the film, instead of the other way around...
That being said, the film had a superb soundtrack, which I own - very well-done; I like the score, as well as the actual songs.

Also, note that Highsmith wrote several more Ripley novels, all of which were excellent (though IMHO none were as good as the first one). In these, Ripley is married & living in France, and has several disturbing adventures. If you're interested in finding out more about the character, my advice would be to read all of the Ripley novels....

Anyone think of trying a double bill of Last Year at Marienbad and Persona?
That would be a good double feature, although I would be more tempted by a double bill of Persona and Mulholland Drive.

I saw Haneke's Caché in the theater as well, back when it was first released.

One particular scene in Caché elicited the strongest audience reaction that I have ever witnessed at a theater. Those of you who have watched the movie know exactly which scene that I'm talking about.

Tokyo Story and The Seventh Seal I got caught on, so now I'm working through the Criterion blu ray releases first and patiently waiting for the rest to follow. I was able to grab the blu ray OOP titles from Amazon but not cheap! Tokyo Olympiad seems to be, by far, the hardest DVD to find; well without an astronomical price tag. With near half on blu ray now, an ever growing catalogue, and monthly upgrade titles, I hope I can avoid the DVD titles completely from now on and just buy blu ray.
