Really? Admittedly, I don't watch too much on there, but recently I've watched Fanny and Alexander, both versions of Solaris, and both Kill Bill films in the proper ratios (with noticeably better PQ than most of my other HD channels), as opposed to HBO HD which is all converted to 1.78:1.

I guess it all just depends on what you're watching.

Yeah, unfortunately. Earlier tonight I was watching the Edward Burns film "She's The One," which was also stretched from its 1.85:1 OAR to roughly 2.35:1. I know I could go into the settings on my tv & cable box and make it appear to be in the correct aspect ratio, but it'd be nice if IFC HD would provide the proper feed to the cable company... or, maybe it's something that happens at the cable company. Even SyFy HD is screwy when some 1.85:1 or 1.75:1 movies are shown correctly but then others end up being pillarboxed with black bars on all four sides of the image.

Just watched Last Year at Marienbad for the first time. What a perfect jewel of a puzzle box and an example of how beautiful black and white films can look.

Agreed. Most films between 1.66:1 and 1.85:1 seem to get stretched to 2.35:1 on IFC HD.

pro-b,
Just wanted to thank you for the recent review of the exhaustive "By Brahkage" blu-ray release. Personally, I'm waiting until next week when my girlfriend goes out of town to even begin to dive into this set because I know it's going to be quite the endeavor. Thanks, again.

CG and Volume11 and Company...

Mets fans with an Arthouse sense of humor...Ron Darling showing off his Yalie education in today's game in Milwaukee: "Milwaukee Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy like Jean Luc Godard, will hopefully leave us "Breathless". Gary Cohen reply, "Well...I don't think that Lucroy is as much of an Impressionist as Godard!"

Shout of the week!

This is an enormous release, ccfixx. And, indeed, you will need plenty of time to go through everything Criterion have offered. I would not go for more than 4-5 films per day as they could be quite overwhelming; it is probably a good thing to see some of them more than once (as I did). On a side note, make sure to listen to the (audio) lectures, especially the one recorded in Boston.

Have a wonderful weekend, ccflix and horseflesh.

Pro-B

That is funny. I have the game on in the background with the volume turned down. Did you happen to catch which inning he said that? I want to check it out later online.

I think it was in the beginning of the game, during the first inning.

Gary Cohen came out with his own gem...Henry Blanco isn't a speedster on the bases...he tries in earnest. AND there's an "Importance in Being Earnest!"

Anyone have By Brakhage yet? If so please let me know your thoughts on the packaging. I'm curious since they went with a new paper packaging. I was a little disappointed about that, but at least the pachaging looks much sturdier than the original paper packaging Criterion used for Blu-Rays.

If I recall the pictures and comments, the packaging is indeed sturdier then cc's original 9. My guess is that it would be similar to the Casablanca case that came in the ultimate collection box (which is pretty solid for what it is).

Just won my copy of Brakhage so I hope it's at least sturdy enough for travel

I would seem to think the case is like the Che case, and the inside digipaks are like the dvd ones if you have some dvd ones of Criterion.

Thanks. Don't watch baseball much (football fan), but love when someone mentions Godard on T.V.

It's becoming more and more obvious that we have the best broadcasters in the game.

Any word on an upcoming B&N 50%off Criterion sale? Been a long time since there was one.

Give it up man. I've been buying Criterion Blu since December and have never seen one of those sales. I'm beginning to think they are just an urban legend.

Any comments about the movie "Kagemusha" ? I watched the trailer but that didn't really show much. I am interested in the theme.
