For those that are region free, the The François Truffaut Collection just dropped to £19.99 (Before VAT is removed) on Amazon.co.uk

I got it for less than $40AUD delivered.

8 Truffaut films for less than $5 a piece!

I love Metzger (Camille 2000 is everything and more), but I couldn't get into The Image actually. I guess the images just weren't as potent as The formers for me
The Image is darker than your typical Metzger (I like most of his stuff in general though) so I can see how it can stick out oddly. Still, the dynamic between the 3 leads is genuinely fascinating and believable. Peter Fernandez's voice over narration is both odd and amusing to me as well.

The Criterion version of The Soft Skin is currently that much. This is a deal you can't pass up, especially with the weak pound.

Well, if that really is a Komodo dragon and if that really is a grill, seems to me that this would be fitting (a movie centered around people eating grilled Komodo dragons):

Why not? They put the other Freshman out.

Absolutely ecstatic that Criterion will be releasing His Girl Friday on Blu-ray. Its about time! Hopefully this trend continues and we see more '30's and 40's comedies come out via Criterion. Especially since it appears the studios aren't particularly interested in releasing these wonderful films themselves.

I would LOVE to see Criterion also release Midnight (1939), starring Don Ameche and Claudette Colbert with a screenplay by Charles Brackett and Billy Wilder. Would be especially neat since the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" in 2013 and IMO deserves to be on Blu-ray.

It's definitely darker and one of his better acted films. I'm sure I'll give it another spin one day as it's not one I made my mind up with one way or the other (Score I definitely didn't care for).

Aside: If you don't have a Fandor membership, consider getting one during their half off promotions. They have a Great variety of sexploitation!

I should probably upgrade to the Criterions for the extras) and can't wait for a decent Matter of life and death to come out, but the one I am really waiting for is A Canterbury Tale, my all time favourite movie (along with My neighbour Totoro).

Someone asked a while back about what director the CC opened up for you. For me it was not The Archers, because I already discovered them. How that happened I think is moderately interesting. I saw Matter of life and death and A Canterbury Tale on UK broadcast TV when I was an early teen. At that time I did not know who P&P were and was probably barely aware that there was such as thing as a film director; I didn't even connect that the two films came from the same team, but they remained two striking viewings that certainly started my love of movies. Imagine my delight when I discovered years later (remember, this was the early '70s... no Internet, DVDs or even VHS!) that the same team had made both movies!
Thank you! Matter of Life and Death is probably next up on my list of Archer productions, after I have all three of their Criterion releases. And I loved The Canterbury Tales as a youngster (I was a precocious, weird child), so I'd be quite curious to see how they handled a semi-modern (WW II era) treatment of Chaucer's pilgrims.

By the way, I can't tell you how many times I've have similar epiphanies where films are concerned. Why, just last night, I was talking with my father about the upcoming Criterion sale; he asked me what films I was considering buying, and I mentioned Insomnia, and how that would represent my initial foray into Stellan Skarsgård's Swedish filmography. We talked about some of his recent films, and my father opined, "I think the first film I remember really liking him in was The Hunt For Red October". I'd never made the connection that the sub driver hunting Marko Ramius, Tupelev, was Stellan Skarsgård. My mind was blown for just a moment.

I was remiss in not mentioning Farrar's performance. I'm glad his portrayal was faithful to the novel, as he was quite good as Mr. Dean.

I especially loved the scene where he was riding away, half-drunk, singing "I won't be a nun. No, I can't be a nun. I am so fond of pleasure!! I can't be a nun" He really got under Clodagh's skin something terrible. She was giving him this stern lecture, as only a nun can; "if you have any spark of decency, you won't come near us again." To hear Sister Superior admonish him, you'd think that Dean was some scoundrel, the progenitor of Han Solo, perhaps, lol. I wasn't sure if she was about to slap him, or jump him. The latter would have made Sister Ruth blow a gasket for sure!

I agree about the story; I admit that I knew a little of the narrative framework going into the movie, but even with that foreknowledge, I was a bit shocked at just how primal a level the film operated on, given when it was produced (1947), and where. Michael Powell said it was the most erotic film he'd ever made, and I completely get that. Given how we've broken down pretty much every barrier when it comes to sexuality in film, I don't think many of today's moviegoers would be shocked by Black Narcissus; however, those of us that relish in watching classic films, in addition to the modern, have some perspective as to the prevailing thinking back in the old days. Given that perspective, we can see just how Black Narcissus would titillate some, while disgusting others. The very suggestion that a nun could have a sexual appetite to subdue would have been most controversial. It's no wonder the Catholic League of Decency went nuts upon seeing the uncut version of the film.

I imagine seeing a Terrence Malick film on IMAX would be much like having Scarlett Johansson walk naked into my bedroom with a Twister mat slung over her shoulder, and her saying, "I'm bored, want to play?"

Yes, please!!!

By the by, just the other day I placed an order with amazon.uk for some things to take advantage of the Brexit-"inspired" drop in the £/$ exchange rate. One of them is the region-free BFI edition of the pre-Archers The Edge of the World. So, if Criterion announces an American release of the film, you're welcome.

Wait...maybe it is indeed a lizard on a grill...you know a lizard being cooked...and put on a pizza...that you would order from say Python Pizza:

"Yes. Dino, lizard, hold the mammal, no worms... and, uh, spicy."

And, boom, we have our Super Mario Bros. US Blu-Ray release via Criterion!

Oh, what a time to be alive.
