So, given the rudimentary lecture on the steady state dynamic range of our visual system (~ 45 sec. timestamp with cartoon drawing here which I figure for hobbyists is far more entertaining than describing Weber or Michelson contrast in depth...which I can do at a later time if readers call for it), what does this mean in terms of the peak luminance output of the Z9D series and future 4K HDR TVs?
Well, it means, given the contrast capability of the instantaneous adaptation state of the eye and the need to cover different adaptation states (the eye sliding along the luminance level scale in the clip), to make images even more lifelike, science indicates that TV manufacturers can still push the nits levels even higher than the Z9D in order to take advantage of our human visual system. Keeping in mind government regulations limiting power consumption, the future challenge for R&D divisions is how to (improve) regulation of the electricity that feeds the light sources behind the panel. Simplistically, given an excellent algorithm, the more LEDs televisions have in years to come, the better one can distribute the electricity to achieve higher and higher levels of peak brightness and still comply with government regs. |

My question is how bright is too bright? In daylight we expect things to look bright and the pupils of the eye adjust to the overall brightness (most people will wear sunglasses). However, in a dark theater (or home theater) the sudden brightness in a scene could be unconformable and actually distract from the viewing experience.

Even if one is viewing in a darker environment, as long as the speculars (highlights) are small enough and for movies or recorded content that during grading, the content creator has taken into consideration the light and dark adaptation process of the eye (which is a common sense thing to do), we can go brighter than what we have today with existing consumer TV sets. As proof of concept, the 4000 nit Sony experimental LCD/LED display which was shown at CES 2016 does not appear uncomfortable with properly presented material. P.S. By “properly” I mean the imagery delivered isn’t characterized by too rapid local luminance changes in scenes or global luminance changes like if HDR content and SDR content is presented sequentially to viewers which could happen with live broadcast material (e.g. commercials). ^ Also, consider that Sony, WB and, for that matter, Lionsgate are already purposefully mastering their Ultra HD Blu-ray movies at 4,000 nits.

I hope you get a good turnout and people have fun because TVs come and go year by year but I think the friendships people make at real world social gatherings like this tend to be more fulfilling and long lasting. |

Any detailed zd9 specs yet?
Interested in ansi contrast, peak brightness, dcip3/rec2020 coverage and the amount of led dimming zones if possible. Apologies if already mentioned, I searched around for answers and couldn't find any. |
