I will never understand how Sony rolls out these updates. My X900E has it but I highly doubt my Z9D will receive it anytime soon. Even though other Z9D owners have it I'm at the end of the chain. Of course, I could just download it manually

Turned on one of my Z9D’s after I got home Friday night and the update was there waiting for me to apply. Still haven’t checked my 2nd one. No issues to report after downloading the update.

This question is for Geoff D and mutelight. Two guys that I respect. I would like your opinion on if I should set my Panasonic Ub820 to mid or high lumanance or super high lumanance to my Z9D and why? Thanks.

Don't wait around for updates. If you want it just do it via USB. It's really not hard and IMO the best way to do updates. If you need any help with it just ask.

I am not all that familiar with the Panasonic but what you are describing sounds like the "target luminance" feature on the Oppo (which Geoff D and I have) .

That setting is only applicable to displays that are either SDR or displays that accept HDR signals but don't properly tone map those signals to the display's capabilities. (mainly projectors)

If the feature you are asking about is what I think it is, I would disable it if you can because the Z will handle all HDR tone mapping and handle it well. (Unless "super high luminance" is the equivalent of letting the untouched signal through.)

Thanks mutelight. It is my understanding that by setting my Panasonic to mid to high lumanance it will tone map the signal to 1000 nits to my Z9D. I believe super high lumanance tone maps to 1500 nits. I watched Bohemian Rhapsody last night with my Ub820 set to super high lumanance and it looked pretty dang great. I wonder what the Panasonic does with the nits when the 4K Blu-ray is mastered to 1000 nits and set to super high lumanance?

Even super high at 1,500 is below the display's capabilities as it will reach 1,700 natively. Is there a way to turn off the feature entirely?

If something is graded at 1,000 nits, it will cap out there.

You should search the Panasonic player thread for Geoffy’s posts, he bought an 820 or 420 and wrote about it. What you’re asking is answered in his posts over there.

You can actually disable the tone mapping on my Panasonic. I guess I should try it and see which one offers better tone mapping, player or Z9D.

I couldn't wait any longer so I manually updated the software on my Z9D last night. It fixed all the little irritants I had with the previous Android. I guess there will be another update coming to fix whatever issues this version of Android has with soundbars and receivers. Glad I got over my stubbornness of waiting on the auto update and took the plunge.

I'm still on the previous firmware. I don't use any of the internal apps (except the video app every once in a while) so I might as well stick with it. Both my Z9Ds are "dumb" TVs anyway.

Besides I keep reading about all sorts of issues. Not worth it for me personally. I do intend to update my sister's 900E whenever there will be a new firmware, fixing whatever issues the most recent one brought along.

I think the dumbest move they ever made was making TVs 'smart'

I finally upgraded the firmware of my 75" Z9D, and have a question. Previously, you used to press the HOME button on the remote and hold it down and you would see which apps are running. Now, it just goes to the app page where you select one. Does anyone know how to now find out which apps are running in the background that have not closed?

I have owned my 75" Z9D for two years. Had it pro broke-in and calibrated.

I am the type of guy that loves buying the next best TV for the family area which has to be an LED/LCD not an OLED.

This year, my thinking was: I'll be selling the Z9D for Samsung's 82" Q900R 8K BUT I am starting to read from owners and reviewers that it might not be able to beat the Z9D in PQ.

The Z9D has turned out to be heck of a TV. I am extremely glad that I am a "Z" owner.

Maybe next year a manufacturer will produce something better??????

Yeah I have the 65" version and other than a little DSE it's pretty much perfect and an amazing TV. By far the best set I've ever owned. I have had it for a couple of months and I'm still blown away with how well the FALD in this set works. I rarely see blooming and the black level and near black detail is superb. The only bad thing about having a set this good is I'm now spoiled.
