DV discs without DV firmware is a no go right or does your engineer sample have it? Sure you can play HDR10 version but that isn't any diffrerent from HDR10 only discs.

Hi Robert,

Yes that's the David I meant!, That's great to hear please give him my regards when you see him, just say Martin from UK was asking!.
That sounds very good, I'm thinking of upgrading from my UB700 at some point.

You are so right, sorry for my silly mistake! I can't test DV at this time.

So for now all that can be reported on is HDR10 performance.

You can use the OPPO for DV, DV performance should be almost identical. A comparison with OPPO DV vs UB820 HDR10 with HDR Optimizer can still give an idea how good is the HDR Optimizer feature.

I don't follow you, how does Sony come to this? Robert also has LG OLEDs so he can use that with the OPPO. I'm not talking about rocket science here just a simple comparison between the same movie's DV picture and the UB820s HDR10 with HDR Optimizer. If he is lucky and happen to have the same movie twice he just connects both players to the TV and change between the 2 input.

And those are not Sony things, Dolby created Profile 5 at the beginning and Sony had to choose Profile 5 because their hardware is only enough for that but this is totally not related to this topic

Get that info from this post?

Example
Quote:
Some technical background on that if you are interested... "Dolby Vision Profile 4" (which has been Vudu's primary DV format for several years) is a backwards compatible format that will play 4K main10 (SDR) if the device does not support Dolby Vision. Some new DV-capable devices (primarily Apple TV and Sony TVs) decided not to support Profile 4, only Profile 5 (a non-backwards compatible format). We have been re-encoding our UHD catalog in Profile 5, and are over 2/3 complete. Most other non-DV devices can play Profile 4 as SDR, but until we add separate "main10" and DV P5 versions those titles will play as HDX on Apple TV.

Nah, I got it from Dolby's site last year.

According to Robert, Panasonic will also implant Profile 5 to work with Sony TVs. AF8's Dolby Vision update is rolling out as I type in Europe so hopefully Panasonic will be ready not long after post launch. According to stores in Europe it's coming in June so hopefully in July their DV update will be out too.
I don't even care OPPO anymore, UB820 is much cheaper and good enough for me based on Robert's impressions.

much cheaper? isn't the 820 $500.00 bucks? that's $50.00 bucks cheaper than the 203

Their most recent is I think the April 2018 pdf. It still leaves a really very little to interpret. My earlier point was against how people like to compare static time points with tone mapping versus using metadata to do that in the display. (HDR10+, Dolby Vision). Don’t be taken back if Panasonic’s DV update is somewhat delayed, the industry doesn’t work fast as you likely know.

203 is 850 euros and the UB820 is 440 euros in Europe, for me this is much cheaper

I see your point but this is what we have now, that comparison would be still useful.

In my opinion Dolby Vision will be less relevant when we will have 4000 nit bright displays so no tone mapping is required with HDR10 movies mastered at 4000nits. DVs time will be when we will have 10000 nit 12-bit panels but by then these HDR standards will be outdated, they are already talking about 20000 nits.
This is a challenging technology, not easy to create this bright display without overheating, with low power consumption.
So HDR is in a really early stage where these HDR standards are well beyond the current display tech, any TV you buy today will obsolete very soon. And I could go forever about this but this is not the right thread to do

If Dolby won't solve their issues then DV will just die, creating DV content is expensive and complex, and full of doubts. It's a mess that's the TLR

Five years from now things should start to stabilized, with 8K and Dolby Dream-on.

Have a projector by chance? Want to see how that projector setting works out for tone mapping.

Nope. I got an OLED. There is a thread on AVForums with lots of folks having projectors though. They test the 820 now.
