I watched the first two mission impossible's last night on the oppo 203 with DV and it looked good. Tried it in the panny with DV and again as expected it was brighter with less highlight details. I took a quick look at the same movie with the oppo 203 DV vs the panny HDR-10 with optimizer and the oppo DV looked better. It seemed like it had a tiny bit more color and more depth. Now for straight HDR-10 the panny's optimizer looks better which we already know. I am going to use my oppo for DV title's for now and my panny for HDR-10 movies.

Same. My own fault for not going far back enough into the thread, but still....mildly annoying that THE DAY it arrived on my doorstep is the day this particular flaw became a big topic of discussion again. I haven't checked out any DV discs on it yet besides EARTH: ONE AMAZING DAY which...maybe seemed brighter? But, I just switched the B6 to the DV Dark preset. Based on what Geoff D said about different discs/studios....maybe I'll try Sony's SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING tonight and see how blown out it looks.

Not the biggest thing in the world, but mildly deflating at the 400+ price point. Hopefully it does get fixed in an update.

Here’s hoping!
Vincent Teoh pointing it out in a widely seen review might get some kind of response.

I’m no expert, but reading between the lines it does seem like surely it’s something the player is adding that it shouldn’t. DV was introduced as a firmware update on these players, if I’m not mistaken?

It was. I read several professional/periodical reviews before finally pulling the trigger. All of the ones I read from the first couple months after release said that "DV is coming via update, but was not available at the time of our review"

My player is arriving tomorrow but I’m in two minds as to whether to send it back. As I said, I have the UB700 which I’ve been more than happy with. Yet the optimiser reaction and DV on the 820 really twisted my arm to upgrade.
Seems DV being a little borked means I’m down to just HDR10 now optimised, but is it THAT much better than what I’ve been getting from the UB700?

Yet another person that waited a while before getting the 820. After reading about the DV issue, I wonder if I should find a way to return it.

I still have my Opportunity 203, which seems to do well with DV, except it makes my Sony TV display the Dolby logo about 5 times before the movies start.

That would be the logical way of looking at it. But Kris Deering and Vincent Teoh have both been told by Panny's reps that "it's like that becuz Dolby" so where else are we supposed to go for answers? Seems like a lot of buck passing but no-one really cares whose fault it actually is, just as long as it gets fixed.

I like seeing that logo come up, very classy.

Exactly what I've been doing for the last couple of months. Well, I don't have a Panny that currently plays DV because I returned the 820 and bought the 420, but you get my point: I've got the best player for DV and the best player for mapping HDR10.

What's everyones 820 like for noise? I've had mine for a few weeks now and get a bit of constant drive noise, and even disc spin noise when playing Ghostbusters II for the first time tonight. It's quite distracting during quieter dialogue scenes.

Maybe I need to house it in a glass cabinet?

Panasonic better fix this problem and soon or I'm selling my UB820. I didn't buy a high end player to have incorrect DV output. I do love the HDR tone mapping though.

820 is not a high end player. 9000, Pio 500, those are high end

That's true but it does kinda have a high end price. There are certainly much cheaper players.

Heh, putting my previous Pannys on my glass TV stand made them sound like they were about to take off. Sony discs in particular seem to give the drive a bit of a hard time.

Which according to Vincent in his review also has the DV issue.

Also if I remember correctly the 820 price point isn't much off from Oppos 203.

Yeah I forgot about that. Since the 9000 also has the problem it definitely means a fix is imminent if Panasonic wants to sell that player. Here's hoping it's soon.

I put some small thick square foam pads under each corner of panny and i hardly hear it at all.

^ Nice tip, good for all a/v devices when vibration isolation and or the actual device's stability needs help. Not necessary to add to all equipment, but as needed it's a great fix.

You'll be using the Pany player much more often.

The Dolby people are nice people, dedicated to what's best for us; I'm sure they have a good plan ahead. I'm confident to their technical expertise and to their mastering business print.

I wish Panasonic would have put more attention to this important aspect, particularly for a $500 player.

* The more the days approach April first (one-year anniversary since the official Oppo Digital's exit announcement) the more we miss it. It's going to take years I think before we realize how truly sad the news were.
The 9000 is nicely built; it better be for twice the price.

We have been spoiled by Oppo, now it's payback time,
