Yes. I can hit Playback Info. button & the info is displayed & press it again to exit out of it & the box on my screen (shown in my image links) will vanish but if I pause again or rewind, etc. it comes back & will not disappear until this process is repeated. It's quicker to just press HDR Setting button but, I don't wish to do either. I would prefer to just not have it display at all.
**Update** Okay. I have figured it out I believe. I had to press the STATUS button once, a bar is displayed, & then press it once more & the play status box went away & isn't returning. This was really starting to distract me from my BD viewing so thanks for bouncing the idea. What a relief.
So if you press the STATUS button the box will be there & annoying, from there you can double press the button & it will be gone.
It's the little things that kill . It was a little more complicated because I use a learning remote & store all my remote commands in it so I wasn't using the default remote control. I probably would have knew about the status button if I was familiar with the stock remote.

I know right? I was about to have a conniption. My error though as I said, I immediately stored all the stock remote's commands in my Learning remote when I purchased the player so some of the buttons are more from memory than actual labels. I use the Sony RM-VLZ620 Learning remote https://drive.google.com/file/d/13Ii...ew?usp=sharing. I use it for all my equipment & don't really have any problems. But this issue became a constant annoyance. Had I familiarized myself with the stock controller I would have known the function of the Status button. I didn't even have that button stored in my learner remote so that was a problem. Probably didn't think I'd use it.
Again, thank you PissedOffPeon for getting me thinking in the right direction & finally getting me off my keister to dig out the Panasonic remote & figure it out. Now I can enjoy Ultra Q series on blu ray in peace.
Do you guys actually use the Panasonic player remote?

Yup, the player itself is great, the remote continually pisses me off.

On my calibrated 75Z9D, the X800 and 820 (running through the same AV receiver) more or less produce the same qreat picture for both SDR and HDR. Now I fully understand that in theory, the 820 should have the upperhand in chroma upsampling. This might be more apparent with the appropiate test patterns, perhaps it might be even a little visible to the eye with certain regular content? But to say there is a huge difference which is clearly noticable all of the time, and then to such an extent which would make the X800 an inferior player when compared to the 820 regarding picture quality? No. Or at least, I am not seeing it.

Still waiting on examples to be given of regular Blu-rays (preferably with indications of scenes and timestamps) with which one could easily and clearly spot the difference. I still own two Blu-ray copies of certain titles. That would make a good comparison I think, because then I can run two copies of the same movie at the same time and toggle between the 820 and X800 (which I actually did before). I will happily eat my words should I be wrong and do see a difference after all.

In the meantime though, I shall be enjoying both my 820 and (multiregion) X800. I'm a Sony man first, but I have nothing but love for the 820, especially for its Optimizer.
To my eyes any difference in regular BD SDR playback is minimal, and doing what you suggested (also own 2 copies of certain titles, and the original x800) made that clearer. Having said that, colors did look slightly richer on the 820 for any BD i compared. It’s certainly not a obvious difference with BD’s, at least to me, and the x800 does a good job regardless; BD’s look great on both.

With UHD playback i thought that the difference was easier to spot and appreciate. The title that sold me was Blade Runner 2049, i watched the opening scene (the flyover and the fight with Dave Bautista) on both players, A/B-ing multiple times, and the improved depth to the picture was pretty obvious to me. The flyover scene had a somewhat flat look to it on the x800 when compared to the 820, especially with the buildings and structures in the distance. When K enters the darkened home to do his interrogation, I had the same impression: on the x800 the scene looked a touch lifeless and flat, which wasn’t a problem on the 820. Again, UHD’s look great on both players, but the improvement here was clear.

Thanks for your response.

I will take a look at the Blade Runner 2049 scene you mentioned sometime then.

Yep

(9000 has a few more projektor modes for the optimiser but these could just as easily be applied to any of the Panny players which use the same SoC, it's just locked out in firmware)

Panasonic's HDR optimizer still uses static tone mapping, which is good BUT dynamic tone mapping is better. The big question is will Panasonic eventually create their version of DTM (similar to what JVC did with their current projectors) and include it in their 4K players? I haven't heard of anything like that yet unless I missed something. I'm hoping they do this. DTM evaluates the picture frame by frame or scene by scene which is the best kind of tone mapping. We need this in their players!

It would not surprise me to see Panasonic implement DTM in their inevitable future 820 and 9000 replacement....especially given the astronomic pricing of Lumagen and Envy. There could be a market opening here. DTM could be of benefit for many flat panels as well.

Lets hope they make it happen next year. Fingers crossed *

This HDR stuff is so complicated to get exactly right. Created a lot of headaches. We need a plug and play solution with excellent results and I think only Panasonic can make it happen with their version of DTM. Whoever has a newer JVC projector already has that option with the newest firmware, which is fantastic. Owners are raving about how good it is.

What would really add the cherry on top would be if they added an HDMI in to tone map sources that are not directly from a disc (streaming players, video games, etc.).

That would be sweet. But is it even possible?

I dare say you'd need some pretty powerful hardware to be able to remap it in real time according to whatever nits value has been set, but then when they're charging a thousand simoleons for a player I'd expect it to be able to do such things!

Why not? The OPPO 203 does it, and there are a couple of devices (like the upcoming madVR Envy and Lumagen Pro) which sole purpose is to tone map and process the image (i.e. they only accept incoming signals through HDMI and then output it after processing the picture; but they don't actually 'play' anything).
