Nothing can do that. It’s a DVD no matter what you do to it.

As you know (71%), there are people still buying DVDs - primarily because it's the only medium available for a particular movie or TV series. Many of these people are videophiles with large disc collections (ie, lots of DVDs, many Blurays and now desiring to buy UHD Blurays). Hence, like me these videophiles will always want to evolve their disc collection; thus want to buy the best player capable to produce the best PQ for all video formats: DVDs, Blurays & UHD Blurays.

From your comments you don't have DVDs -- stop trying to get people into your circle by negative remarks. So burst your pessimistic bubble and look outside of your circle. You may meet a few of us videophiles and learn a lot. We tend to have an open-mind and are optimistic in future technologies (we always find a way to evolve our hobby). In fact, I still have many movies on VHSs that have never been on a DVD. I found software that does an incredible job at upscaling these VHSs to high quality digital files. (There's always a way).

Encountered flickering with the last two DV titles I played: Some Like It Hot (KL) and The Outsiders (SC)

:\

Edit: There was a firmware update?! Just tested The Outsiders with DV turned on after updating, and no more flickering

Yeah I did own one and plugged it in to see as I didn't remember but I have never seen DVD upscaling look any better on any UHD or BD player except this one. They are pretty cheap now to and still play some BD's. If you own a UB820 or UB9000 it's not a bad idea to get one for DVD's. Just don't throw an Arrow BD in it.

Bumping this, and also wanted to add as a general question, is it better to let the TV or the Panasonic do the upscaling to 4K?

Just let the Panasonic upscale it by using the Auto setting. If you manually set it to 1080p, you'd have to remember change it when watching a UHD (since there's no source direct).

Either way, there's no magic to resolution upscaling so you don't have to worry. Devices and video cards have been doing it for many years and Panasonic has been doing it top notch for a while too.

Actually, I set it to output everything to 4K.

Default UB820 problems playing Paramount Dolby Vision 4K blu-rays

Hi. First time posting. I've already contacted Panasonic about this but just checking to see if anyone here has come across this. Got the new Godfather 4K box set yesterday and tried watching the Godfather. All kinds of noise in the black areas above and below the picture as well as noise/pixelization in some scenes with Dolby Vision on. I then remembered that the same thing had happened with the Indiana Jones box set but at the time I chalked it up to the discs and ordered a replacement. Life got in the way and I had never checked to see if the new discs were having the same problem. Checked today and sure enough same problem as Godfather. It was then that I realized both of these sets were Paramount. I only have 1 other Paramount 4K with DV (It's A Wonderful Life) but haven't gotten around to watching that until today. Same issue. I then checked two discs from other companies (Evil Dead from Lionsgate and They Live from Shout Factory) and no problems. If I turn the DV off, all of the Paramount discs play fine in HDR10. I have the latest firmware (1.69) and I watch DV shows on Netflix with my Firestick all the time with no problems. I've attached 2 images to show what's going on. Any thoughts on this problem? Thanks!

It seems like Pana QC have turned into shiitake mushrooms as of late. It’s ridiculous the number of people having problems with 420 and 820 in the last month or so.

We need Oppo back in business, like the good ol' times.

Won't happen but wow what a company beats a major brand name like Panasonic, Sony, LG anyday. At least they went out in style the 203 and 205 still the best UHD players ever made. Hope they keep repairing them for years to come. At least we have Reavon now, well they haven't picked up the slack just yet anyway. The Panasonic UB820 and UB9000 models though incredible BD/UHD only players but lack for other stuff like DVD's, SACD, etc which the Oppo UHD models do quite well. Hoping Panasonic improves their players as well like better looking DVD upscaling and SACD support.

I don't have "Indiana Jones" or "The Godfather", but I've not seen any problems like this with "It's a Wonderful Life" on my 820.

Is there any way to disable the Netflix button on the remote for a UB820? Accidentally hitting it is driving me nuts.

Buy a copy of the ub9000 remote off of eBay for about $15.

The principle is similar for all remotes.
