When the socks keep ripping holes in your shoes, it's less hassle to buy new socks.
It was certainly no quick decision, as even if it had been cleaned, there would have always been nagging doubt in the back of my mind it would have done it again, buggering up the enjoyment of a film. Luckily I got one at a really good price, not long before the cost of buying one suddenly jumped up earlier this year. As my Missus said about the matter: "We don't smoke, don't really drink, or don't go to restaurants or have anything even close to frivolous extravagance. We stay in and watch films together, so just get another one". Oh well, she who must be obeyed... ![]() Last edited by CompleteCount; 12-08-2022 at 06:48 PM. |

You should be okay (I can't remember if it's on by default, although I think HDR10+ has priority), there aren't really that many DV options as there are HDR ones, so you don't have to worry about the Optimizer.

By the way, my usb drive wasn't working because of formatting apparently. It came formatted in FAT32 to begin with, but for some reason I had to reformat it again to the same FAT32 format before my 820 was happy with it. Pretty strange, but yeah, good to know.
Any links to atmos demos I can play around with that are of file type .m2ts? I already have the helicopter one. Are there other file types that the 820 will play atmos audio for? |

I’m thinking about getting either the UB820 or the Sony UBP- X700M as my first 4K Blu-ray player. My TV is a TCL 6 Series. Yes, not the greatest TV, and the HDR makes everything pretty dark when I’m streaming content and I can’t even disable it. At some point I’ll get a better TV, but for now would the Panasonic be a better option for my TV than the Sony or does it not really matter with a lower-end TV?

Still wondering why they cheaped out on the remote, or why the hell they didn't just update the UB900 (looked better than the 820 w/ the luxury remote), as it was basically the same price?

I've been experiencing a fair number of discs on my UB9000 with what looks like defective discs. I recently put in Criterion's THE GAME, and got a lot of pixelation and what looks like a bad disc. I posted on The Game thread, and no on else seems to have experienced this same problem. But it's not Just The Game, I've have numerous discs giving me issue as of late.
Just to check, I pulled out my old standard Panasonic Blu-ray player (DMP-BD60), and it played fine. I then tried it again in my UB9000, and it's also now working fine. Anyone have any ideas what's going on? And yes, Firmware is up-to-date. |

Need someone to explain me one thing.
In my understanding it was if HDR Optimiser turned on, and my settings set to OLED so anything that have less MaxLL and and same Maximum Luminance of 1000 - optimiser wouldn't do a thing. And now I'm seeing this. ![]() Ok, I understand why it's sending Maximum Luminance this small - there's really no need - but should it do it? Also why Max FALL is lower than it is on disc? |

The Optimiser reads MaxCLL first. If it’s lower than the level of target output eg 1000 nits it changes the Mastering Display max metadata to match the lower figure but it doesn’t change the actual image you’re seeing (aside from adding a wisp of banding).
The reason why it does this is some TVs only look at the Mastering Display metadata to decide how to tone map an image, so if the TV is applying its stock 1000-nit tone map for something that’s only 197 nits peak then that might make it look too dark. But if the TV is receiving a Mastering Display figure that matches the nominal peak of the content eg 197 nits then the mapping should be betterer. Makes sense? No idea about the MaxFALL tho |
