Compress all light, detail and color information that exceeds 1000 nits in OLED mode without affecting the APL brightness average. Just compress that part, that of the highlights of the image that exceed 1000 nits, so it is very practical for OLED TVs.

What do you think happens to an LCD when its little zone has to go nuclear for a highlight, or the whole screen in day shots? The black floor is raised. This means contrast ratio diminishes. Not saying the Zd9 or 940E are bad, because they are great, but let's not let ego get in the way of facts. What are we going to debate next, that OLEDs view angle isn't better than LCD?
In SDR and HDR, the depth of image of an OLED trumps the nit chest beating of LCD. Just take a look at ANSI (I don't want any BS on/off numbers) CR numbers for OLED vs LCD, and then get back to me. So back to the player, I think it is doing exactly what I want it to do, but I'll keep monitoring as more people test. |

Would be good to know what nits the differents settings aim for. For instance for a projector owner what does the player assume? I thought older models like the 704 tone mapped to around 700 nits and then cut off? What does the dynamic range slider then do?

If we could get something that did absolute black AND say 2K nits minimum (which it could maintain and not drop to levels barely over 100 nits when the ABL kicks in) along with a decent tone mapping algorithm for the rest then that would be something. As it is, a 940E is not a ZD9 so you can't just lump the latter in with the former. Yes, it's still an LCD and LCD is the devil but my God, what a cheeky little devil it is as the PQ frequently astounds me. |

Thanks you for posting the images, mimics my UB820 testing on various projectors, OLED TVs and all of our LCD TVs.

Obviously for the Dolby Vision you need to use the OPPO but I'm curious how the HDR Optimizer stacks up to a true dynamic metadata format like Dolby Vision. No need to take pics since it's hard to show on pics, just describe how well highlight details are visible, We would really appreciate this comparison ![]() |

Mr. Zohn I would have to ask you some questions on the ub820 reader and I hope you can answer me ... A month and a half ago I asked about the behavior in the multimedia field as for example: read the m2ts BD and BD4K? Also manages the pass-through of lossless tracks DTS-HD MA, TrueHD, ATMOS, DTS-X? Read MKVs with 1: 1 BD and BD4K video tracks? Does it correctly manage lossless trace pass-through? It allows you to change audio tracks, subtitles, to advance with chapters? Is everything handled the same way by both USB HDD and network sharing (DLNA / UPnP)? Does it correctly manage cadences? I understand that these questions may not be of interest to the community or that there are more urgent questions to answer ... Another question that I would like to do and I hope you can answer me on this is if you have had the opportunity to try it on older projectors..I ask because having a Jvc Rs 10 I do not know if it is worth buying it or change the projector first .. What can you tell me about it?

@panman40, if you are talking about David Mckenzie, just last week we had dinner with David, his GF and David's parents and brother. David is great and doing very well!
The UB820 will do a great job tone mapping all HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision HDR to your JVC projector. |

![]() ![]() BTW if DV takes possession of most of the player functions during playback how do you know the HDR optimization or Tone mapping is applicable? |

OK, on the DV, but I've tested my engineer production UB820 with HDR10 discs on several projectors, OLED TVs and several LCD TVs with various peak luminance abilities and this player can be set to the displays liking so it gently rolls off at the peak brightness levels.
Definitely a very cool HDR control feature. I just got a couple DV discs and will test how the UB820 performs with a few displays and proper HDR optimizer settings. |
