Panasonic players don't play video files with lossless or high-res Dolby & DTS audio. That should REALLY be a sticky at the top of every page or something.

I received a company holiday gift card for Best Buy this year and so I'm itching to buy the UB820 at Bestbuy. I guess this probably won't be back in stock till later next year?

Just for clarification Geoff is referring to ripped files that are not on a copy-write complaint storage devices. For example, all capable Panasonic BD players will play Dolby Atmos and DTS:X and all forms of DTS and Dolby surround sound files and formats from all Blu-ray discs and all of the Panasonic player's built-in streaming apps and even ripped Dolby Atmos and DTS:X files from Kaleidescape video servers.

Panasonic and some other CE manufacturers block Dolby Atmos and DTS:X files from playing when the ripped file does not have the Copy Guard Flag handshaking approval.

I upgraded to the new UB900 remote a couple weeks ago from replacementremotes.com, and while it was expensive, it was totally worth it. Much better to handle and maneuver around. It's also a little bit faster as well because the buttons are more solid and can be clicked faster.

Caved in and preordered a beautiful planet to confirm hdr10+ support and compatibility on both my panny and Samsung. Not holding my breath for the Samsung but it's still under manufacturer warranty and Samsung will be giving me my money back.

I must say the Ub820 has been a major upgrade to my home theater, I run it through my Oppo 203. The Panasonic allowse to have extra setting controls thaty Samsung Q9FN just doesn't have. With the Panasonic, I can overcome the black crush that is nearly impossible to get rid of on the Q9 with the on board settings alone. Kevin Miller says that the "brightness" setting on the Q9 this year is tied into the gamma, so adjusting that can effect other areas of the picture. Even just a few clicks of the dynamic range slider reveals shadow detail crushed by the Q9FN. So 4k Blu rays, Netflix, and Amazon have never looked better. If only the Panny had an INPUT.

I have this on preorder so it should be here Wednesday. I'll be able to test it on both my Oppo and Panny and see if there's a difference on my Q9FN. Idk if I'm more excited to test this or just to hear Jennifer Lawrence narrate it

I'm thinking about making a thread for it because I see a lot of people with 2017 series and Samsung hasn't been transparent about that generations support for HDR10+ other than saying the TV's supports it.

Question for Robert or anyone who knows, can the 820 run the HDR Optimizer for HDR10+ or is it like DV?

If what I am told is correct the UB820 and UB9000 HDR Optimizer is limited to SMPTE HDR10 only. But this needs to be tested as I don't think anyone from HQ has been able to try the HDR Optimizer with HDR10+ disc or streaming.

Jon Thompson is on Twitter and was testing his hdr10+ disc on his Panny last week. I sent him the question.

That is very interesting; running the 820 through the 203's HDMI input on the rear.

I agree; it would be awesome if the 820 had a HDMI input (front or rear).
Just imagine for a second...all the very pretty possibilities...
_____

@Robert, 820 (not 810)

It was worse on my MU8000. I can't watch HDR content with anything else on this TV but the 820. The HDR optimizer highlights so much detail crushed in the MU8000's natural state. Even from the newer release such as Fallout

Added a video for reference.

I see many people (I don't mean you specifically) referring to the Q9 off-hand as the current state of "reference" LCD HDR performance but the black crushing would annoy the tits off of me, and whose ****ing genius idea was it to tie black level ('brightness') setting in with gamma?

There are actually people claiming that the Q9 is a reference set, even though it doesn't correctly track the PQ EOTF in any of its picture modes?

Yikes.

It looks like Eotf is panel by panel. A friend on avs had his Q9FN professionally calibrated by Kevin Miller 2 weeks ago and his Eotf was spot on, Kevin actually said it was 1 0f the best out of the box Eotf he's ever seen.

Did Samsung fix it after Vincent's review?

Start playback of a UHD HDR disc.

While the movie is playing, click the Option button on the remote. The Operation Menu will be displayed.

Navigate to Video Settings...Optimum HDR Adjustment. Change it to On to enable the HDR Optimizer.

You can leave the Dynamic Range Conversion Adj. at its default. You can change it later based upon your picture preference; move to the right to get a brighter picture or to the left to get more contrast.

Exit the menus and enjoy.
I'm having trouble with my Sony projector when I put the player to sdr2020. The projector player handshaking puts I think the player to the dynamic range conversion mode so 709, so you can't get to the HDR options. I do occasionally on the old Panasonic 900 have it get into this mode, but I just cycle inputs and kick the handshaking off again.

I'm just not getting the tone mapping working real well. When I leave the player on hdr2020, and put tone mapping on it is washed out on gamma 2.4, so all dark detail too visible and all bright clipped, and looks better on the custom gamma curves.

Yeah, you'll definitely need to use SDR 2020 on the 820 unless you're using custom curves. When using SDR/2020 on the 820, make the sure the projector color mode is set to 2020 (or whatever Sony calls it) with the 2.4 gamma setting. I'm not sure if that will help your handshaking issue or not.

Best Buy seems to be sold out of the 820. Do you guys think they will get more?
