This is something I have been trying to understand for years. If I play a movie ' like the director intended' my picture will stutter all the time and show little depth. Furthermore when you do that most of the time the picture is kind of yellowish like it was shot in 1950. Look for example at Dunkirk. It was shown this way on the most expensive Samsung in a shop nearby. I watched it 20 seconds and decided: DISASTER!!. Then I switched from a cinemalike modus to standard. The yellowish picture became vibrant and the colors were (in my eyes) much better and natural. The yellowish cloth disappeared. Then I played around with the dejudder and deblur settings. Suddenly no more juddering. People walking in the picture suddenly did that in a natural way instead of stopping every milisecond. Furthermore the picture showed much more depth almost like 3D. Finally my picture emerged. If this is what is called ' soap opera effect' well than thank you heaven.

Well, to be fair, Samsung movie mode is too yellow. Try using cinema mode but change the colour temp to warm 1.
In the end, the goal of this hobby is to replicate the best to our ability to the directora’ intentions. So if it’s supposed to look yellow ish (or blue, or green, or brown), then that’s how we’re supposed to watch it. If someone wants to do whatever they want, them they are not for this hobby amd perhaps should take knitting or something else. |

Honestly, I'd say that the goal of this hobby for most people is to get it looking like how they want it to look, not what anyone else wants it to look like.

Apologies if this has been answered before:
I know you can turn the brightness of subtitles up and down. But is this also the case with the subtitles in the Netflix app, or does this only apply to subtitles on discs? |

But even on this forum I'd bet that the amount of people who've properly calibrated their gear (and I mean properly, with a colourimeter and software) are in a VERY small minority, and that doesn't always translate to the big spenders either. In my experience some of those people are the most wilful when it comes to their gear doing what they want it to do, rather than using these silly standards that make it look a certain way. As always it's their money and their choice to be sure, I won't begrudge them that, but it's why I take most user feedback of most discs (and I don't just mean UHDs) with a massive chunk of salt no matter if someone's got some giant $100K projection system or a supermarket special 42" LCD. |

I used to have a Panasonic 65vt30 and had it calibrated. That way it lifted up to most of the standards. After two weeks I decided that I did not like the picture. At that point I started my own " calibration". Do not get me wrong, I like a very natural not overly sharp picture and for certain not extreme popping colours lke your at a fairground or something. Just natural.
Another question on the subject of subtitles. Yes you can adjust the display of the subtitles though only with a disc playing. The problem is that it looks like adjustment has to be made with each movie. Especially with HDR movies the subtitles are too bright so I would like them to be less bright but not every time having to go into the menu to change this. Is there a way to save the settings so that is how it will be displayed every time you pop in a movie? |

The 9000 gives you two projector settings for HDR output versus one in the 820 and an additional gamma adjustment. The overall build quality is quite a bit better on the 9000 being very similar to the Oppo players in that regard. The 820 has a flip down front panel that opens to reveal the disc tray where as the 9000 is more like a standard player with just the flap to the disc tray opening. If money is not a factor then go for the 9000. If you care mostly about performance and build quality isn’t all that important then save some $ and get the 820. Hope that sums it up. |

Got the 820 this weekend, and for my first player I thought the picture looked fantastic!
Though I have a couple of questions.... 1) There is a slight judder to the picture that's a bit distracting, is that expected? All motion processing is turned off and I've set it to Cinema mode. Would changing the HDMI cable to something other than the standard PS4 one I'm using help? 2) I've tried playing 24p MKV content from a USB stick and the player outputs it at 60p. The quality dropped too, so I went back to plugging and playing the USB in the TV. I can't find anywhere in the 820 menu to output it properly to 24p? |

Most of my mkv's are not lossless so they should playe fine but almost all of them are 24p , The panny playing them back in 60p is going to make the video not look correct ? Which players play them back in 24p , Sony ?

Which is why for digital streaming content you are better off getting an applyTV as apple told netflix and others no we aren't doing that, and they have match source options. In short, if you are looking at these for anything other than a great disc player, you are missing the point ![]() |

Geoff, there is an option on both my 820 and 9000 for 24p and the option is “auto” (plays 24 fps as 24 fps) or “off” (plays 24 fps converted to 60 fps).

You don't understand, it doesn't matter what that (or any other) specific setting is set to, some 24p files will be output as 60p. Just another quirk of the crappy file playback on the Pannys. (4K files appear to be unaffected but HD-rez stuff is output at 60p only)

Geoff, how do your know that? From what I can tell when you select "Auto" 24p seems to be playing at 24fps on all of the content I've played.
If this is a bug I'd like to report it to the chief engineer in HQ to fix it. |
