No, you misunderstand me, sorry. I don't mean using the player at 480i output, I mean when it's actually PLAYING 480i content like a DVD (which some people still do, just because you don't doesn't mean no-one else is) it looks really jaggy and poorly deinterlaced. 576i PAL discs are NOT affected by the same issue. |

Geoff, I exaggerated a bit when mentioning VHS and component video outputs.
I knew that you meant 480 interlaced DVDs played by different 4K BR players and how each one handle the processing. I have no clue on the total percentage of people playing those from their 4K Blu-ray players, zero. * As for my earlier post, I accidentally clicked on submit before I was finished. It's tough to type on a small portable device away from the comfort of your palace. |

To me it looks as elegant as the Oppo 203 machine.
I know I know I know; it won't play SACD and DVD-audio for the millions of people who don't have any of those. And unfortunately it comes with apps, so some people might feel very unhappy. But fear not, it plays 4K discs and Blu-ray Audio discs (Pure Audio). ...3D too, of course. I am NOT a Panasonic representative, I am representing the full multiverse. |

Joking aside, I have way too much animation on DVD that doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of coming out on Blu-ray. I figured the Oppo would be the last of a generation of 4k players to have good DVD playback. It's not like the 203 is a slouch in other areas, so I decided to go for it. If I can be proven wrong and Panasonic ends up fixing their DVD playback, then all the better for everyone, I guess! |

I enjoyed watching this video earlier posted by one of the members here.
It sparkles good news for many videophiles using 4K front projectors and 4K flat TV panels. • https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...&postcount=297 It's nice. |

John, Panasonic is following the markets. One high end player for the high end people, and another player for the mid end people. It's very similar to what Oppo has been doing for several years...93, 95, 103, 105, 203, 205.
The 820 might have the same video processor as the 9000, but without the XLR balanced connections, the build quality, the more advanced analog audio section, and further refinements. We are still @ the precipice of HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, time is needed to get there, to improve our 4K displays, to fine tune them panels, to take advantage of what it could be, to implement better with better front projectors, to make this world a better one today and tomorrow. Us @ Panasonic we are advancing that challenge, like Oppo did for so many years before. We are happy to play. |

"While the DP-UB9000 is scheduled to arrive in Europe this October for around 1,000, Panasonic hasn’t yet determined if the player will be sold in the U.S. Here’s hoping it is: With Oppo Digital’s departure from player manufacturing, there will be a gap for high-performance Ultra HD players that address the needs of both videophiles and audiophiles. Fortunately, the UB9000’s chroma upsampling and HDR Optimiser features will be available in other models the company is releasing in the U.S. this summer, including the UB820 ($499). Sound & Vision is currently working on a review of the UB820, so keep an eye out for it in a future issue." Did you ever happen to have a conversation about that with any representative by any chance? I would like to know how they feel about the fact there are still thousands of people around the world who want/need 3D on a new TV but are now left out in the cold. A simple feature that has been a standard since 2010 and which doesn't cost much more to include has just vanished for no good reason at all... Anyway, still no sign of the 820 in my country though they are selling them in Germany now. I'm still waiting for (user) reviews specifically dealing with comments on usage for projectors before purchasing one though. |

3D is alive and well with most projectors, but I do agree 3D needs to come back to consumer flat panels. Around 2014 or 2015 I suggested that all 4K Ultra HD flat panels should have the passive 1080P 3-D feature built in. This would have only raised manufacturing costs around $50 on each 4K flat panel. It would be really cool if every 4K display had the 1080P passive 3D chipset built in for a extra $50. One would buy at pair of 3D glasses for around $10 each if they decide to use the 3D feature. |

Robert,
Sorry if this is a dumb question. Do you know how well a player like this will take a 4k disk and downconvert to 1080p? I've been buying 4k UHD's this year, and am waiting for a projector that works for me. Currently I have the BenQ w1070. I'm wondering, will a UHD downconverted to 1080p look better than a regular Blu-ray? |

100% of all 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players well downscale native 4K discs to 1080P if one does not own a 4K display yet. Many well also downscale to 1080i, 720p, 480P, and 480i if the consumer needs it for a really old display.

Before they killed 3D you have the option of 2D TVs and 3D TVs that can also do 2D.
That option is no more now with 4K, except for your Sony TV and mine Geoff. Front projector owners have advantages; more 3D PJs, larger pictures, more immersive cinematic impact, more 3-dimensionality, ...and new Panasonic 4K/3D players. When Avatar 2 shows up in 3D, watch out. It'll be a new ball game in the history of cinema and home theaters. 《•》 December 2020 > https://movieweb.com/avatar-2-3d-tec...james-cameron/ Last edited by LordoftheRings; 06-03-2018 at 12:19 AM. |
