Investing in HDR10+ hopefully the algorithm format won’t go hungry.
The list will grow. Warner and 20th Century Fox won't be the only ones supporting the format. But keep in mind that Warner and 20th Century Fox already released most of their biggest movies on 4K Blu-ray meaning they won't release anytime soon with HDR10+. Same goes for DV too, re-releasing 4K discs won't happen anytime soon just to add DV. They will milk this cow later.
But even upcoming movies seems that won't have HDR10+ like Deadpool 2. If new releases from these studios won't have HDR10+ then this format won't grow faster neither.

Currently the main focus should be the HDR10 performance because this is what you will most likely watch in the coming years and the 420/820 with HDR Optimizer can give the best possible HDR10 performance on any display.
So don't worry, the 420 will serve you well

i agree (that's great advice) :: that way, it will be years before realizing what Dolby Vision offers, as i have since August 2017 :: personally, i do not purchase any UHD disc that does not support Dolby Vision (picture quality is really worthy of my appreciation) :: great advice (just ignore Dolby Vision, tolerate HDR10, until the - yet again - inferior - HDR10+ comes along; someday?) :: makes a lot of sense?

this information might be interesting

i loaned one of my LG UP970 players to a friend that is still with an HD display, as we both were interested if an UHD disc would play on an HD display (from an UHD player)

yes :: and, it did look improved against the HD disc that was also available

Panasonic :: if it's as good as already perceived, the picture equality of all formats (SD/HD/UHD) - should simply be incomparable

That's good to know.

Is the difference between the 420 and 820 simply DV support?

And the difference between 820 and 9000 is just analog audio quality?

The UB820 vs. UB420, as you said is DV, plus HDR10+, and the player size, weight and build quality is better on the UB820. UB420 will not be available in the USA.

For the UB820 vs. the flagship UB9000 the step up model has exceptional build quality and design. Some examples of the design and build quality upgrades are:

- Separate and isolated audio and video circuitry with dedicated built-in power supplies for each section.

- High-end audio DAC with dedicated 7.1 analog audio outputs plus left/right balanced XLR outputs for high-end 2-channel systems. 32-bit 768KHz AK4493 DAC

- Premium build and precision chassis design and heavy build quality with vibration dampening

Thanks for the clarification, Robert. Btw, I did send you an email asking if I could purchase the 820 from you.

Not really a hands on review as a Panasonic demo of the UB9000.

The final comment just epitomizes the marketplace.

One of the side effects of enabling the HDR Optimiser seems to be the introduction of a subtle amount of judder when it comes to dealing with slow camera pans - but it’ll be easier to reach a firm conclusion when we’ve spent some quality time with a proper review sample.

For the audio demo the player is plugged into an all-Technics system which includes a stereo amplifier and pair of large floorstanders. We hear a small selection of tracks ranging from Beethoven to jazz, to an acoustic cover of The Mamas & The Papas' California Dreamin’.
Robert do you see the first paragraph issue with the UB820? I was thinking of the settings on the display might be the cause of judder.

Seriously the Mama's and Papa's at a Panasonic demo?

Not that I noticed, but I'll look more carefully when engaging the HDR optimizer. I'm out for most of tomorrow so I check it out Tuesday and get back here.

Thanks for your kind post. No doubt DV sounds like the better option since studios grade each individual frame and already there are a few DV discs available, but with its closed approach that the HDR10+ lacks no doubt this will be an interesting topic for debate in the years to come. Since I've gone down the Samsung route, and only because of friendly discounts, then DV will be a miss for me.

Default Dolby Vision :: count of currently available titles (6/4/18)

76 is correct (i just checked) - (seems it depends entirely on how you count and what your biases are)

this count included both available/announced titles, including the following

1 - Earth
2 - tv shows
11 - movies (multiple releases of titles)
62 - movies (individual titles)

note :: at least three titles are not currently listed (total count 79?)

At last forum page... new DV recient is Jack Reacher, Anniliation,
A Quiet Place, Terminator G...

not yet on forum OP page. Add those to the count.

Looking good.
Panny UB820 has DV. Seems fairly priced for AV Home Theater peoples. Offers some future-proofing

Yes - but it uses the DV's HDR10 metadata as the basis for it to work.

From the What HiFi article:

If you happen to be watching content using dynamic metadata (e.g. Dolby Vision) on a compatible TV, the player recognises this and the HDR Optimiser is disabled.
