What you’re saying is true, but since HDMI 2.1 chips exist in LG TVs, I’m not surprised that compatible cables have finally appeared. We’ll probably know soon enough if they work up to spec. Even though there’s no 8K input device to attach them to (that I know of).

With those Panasonic players here from this thread, get certified HDMI cables for double assurance ...

It's more for professional filmmakers with 8K cameras and 8K monitors.
The 9000 and 820 owners are video aficionados, not professionals.
They watch 4K Blu-rays, 3D Blu-rays, standard Blu-rays, DVDs, and they spin CDs.

With all the effort you put into bullet points, you'd think you'd provide actual explanation, as well as citation and sources for your contradiction. I read from the HDMI Licensing you keep mentioning....so your own source doesn't back up your arguments (if you could even call simple contradiction that), and if another section of that site DOES back you up, you should provide links to where.

LG's 2019 OLED TVs and Nano Cell LCD TVs do have HDMI 2.1 chipsets that will support the full 48Gbps after a firmware update that is expected later this year.

Sony's 8K Z9G series will support HDMI 2.1 at the full 48Gbps at launch and we'll be demonstrating native 8K HDR content on Sony's 85" Z9G at out TV Shootout on Wednesday, June 12th and Thursday, June 13th, 2019 at the Jacob Javits convention center. This will be the first public showing of Sony's 8K Z9G and for true native 8K HDR content.

Just outside the scope of our field of view ...

I'm surprised that no high end audio/video cable manufacturers have yet take control?
In the high end audio business you have speaker wires that cost $30,000 a meter.
Here with a cable that can do much much more you get the certification seal of approval, and for less than five bucks a meter ($4.39). Add another meter for sixty cents.

Is that saying something or what.

I've played Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk UHD BD that is at 60 fps HDR 10 on my Panasonic DP-UB420 at 4:2:2 12 bit with a 4.8 meters cable and I didn't get a single glitch during the whole movie. Do you know what brand of cable I was using? A 9.50 Euros Amazon Basics HDMI cable. Just my 0.002$.

facts are facts (whether you accept them or not)
  • facts :: they stand on themselves, not what you think or choose to not think
  • information :: if you decide to reject the information that i presented - that's fine (your choice)
  • arguments :: i do not have 'any arguments'
  • HDMI Licensing :: 'some of the information' is actually within their documentation (although not easily located/recognized)
  • HDMI Licensing :: 'while much - most all - of the information that i presented is from HDMI Licensing, to my knowledge, it's not on the web site (the information that i have presented, while from HDMI Licensing, is not - probably - on their web site)
  • HDMI Licensing :: if anything - the fact of the matter(s) is HDMI Licensing 'backing up' HDMI Licensing (nothing to do with me personally)
  • 'backing up my arguments' :: i have none that i am aware of, just reliable factual information (that this information 'conflicts' with the 'nonsense' that i encounter, does not qualify as 'arguments' as you indicate)
  • 'facts' :: that i am aware of, facts do not require 'backing up' which has nothing to do with me personally
  • if you desire to argue/disagree/etc, you do your research and provide information supporting your 'thinking' (back yourself - the information does not require such behavior - after all, its just reliable factual information - backing it up simply makes no sense whatsoever - you're welcome to accept/reject as you choose - definitely not going to get any argument(s) from me - after all, i just provided information to be helpful)
  • what i find interesting, is that you are (making challenge(s) of me to back up my information) while completely not doing likewise for 'others' involved in these posts (while i do not care either way, i do find it interesting)

While analog cables can be terminated easily, HDMI cables can’t.

I'm using some HDMI cables that are like 7 or 8 years old to carry such ^ signals and they're working just fine.

When I went from DVD to Blu-ray, I fell for the marketing hype and got all kinds of overpriced expensive HDMI cables. Nowadays I just rock el cheapo cables of brand X (except the 49 feet active HDMI cable for my projector).

Back in 2006 I too was suckered into spending lots of $$$ on an HDMI cable. Very expensive lessoned learned.

Turns out the 2016 LG OLED TVs don't have the dynamic tone mapper of the 2017 model.
So I guess the need for the 820 HDR optimizer for the 2016 TVs is more necessary than the later models.

But some models from that year do 3D. And yes, mate them with a Panasonic 820 player.
People can sell their Oppo players on eBay and with the profit they make the 820 is free.
What a way to upgrade smartly.

I've only had the DP-UB420 for a month and a half and I'd like to know, as processing seems to be the same as the 820, what do users think of the different Sharpness Controls. Using different video program both HDR and SDR I still don't know what the Chroma and Edge Correction do. What do they really do?
Thanks in advance.

I've just ordered this 4K player. Hopefully, it lives up to the hype. Didn't want to wait any longer for the x800m2.

Build quality of the 820 is poor, saw it in the showroom and it felt light and cheap but it's going to be in a cabinet with the door closed so maybe won't be an issue.
