My RS440 was pro calibrated with a separate bt2020 which can be used with one of my Arve curves (which is far better than the out of box HDR mode). So thinking I will just use that with the HDR optimizer. It sounds like the optimizer just kicks in when it needs to based on your nits setting. Someone at AVS was claiming you need to do SDR 2020 for the Optimizer.

I used both my custom gamma HDR picture mode as well as the regular default HDR mode with the optimizer, and I prefer using the default one. |

yes :: 'very' significantly so
recently, i had several opportunities to view the best 4K front projectors my reference :: LG OLED55C7P (note :: i will also be purchasing an 2018 LG OLED55C8 - when our room remodeling is complete) note :: surprisingly, i found the front projectors; 'extremely disappointing' (regarding, picture quality) (note :: if size matters so much and not picture quality, i am guessing to those so inclined, that they make sense) Last edited by jibucha; 06-17-2018 at 04:53 AM. |

Hello Many thanks Jibucha today I was watching the C7 (2017) and C8 (2018) then the line above which are the E7 (2017) and E8 (2018) last, this is excellent LG OLED UHD 4K 65W7 (2017) and W8 (2018) but it is a lot of money for me the image quality matters, so I am deciding to OLED 65 " I'm going to sleep in Portugal, it's now 6 o'clock in the morning ![]() |

I wanted to see if there was a difference between selecting any of the various "HDR TV type" settings when playing on my 75Z9D. HDR optimizer has to be enabled ofcourse otherwise this setting does nothing. The following can be chosen:
-OLED -Super High Luminance LCD -Middle or High Luminance LCD -Basic Luminance and Projector I worked my way up from Basic, Middle and Super. The picture goes from dim and a little washed out on Basic, to very bright and "popping" on Super (the same in that regard as it would look without the optimizer, so that would be correct). OLED and Middle share about the same look that falls between Basic and Super. So getting this setting right for your TV (or projector) seems to be mandatory in order to get the best picture while using the optimizer. So for me it means using Super for the Z9D (in the TV's Pro mode with contrast set to 86) and Basic for my projector (in the projector's default HDR mode with contrast set to max). Now while the difference with the projector is significant, the difference with the Z9D is not as impressive. It's still good though, and as I have stated before, it does provide a less blown out look. So in this case it's more like putting the icing on the cake. ![]() Some other things: The 820/824 did not recognize any of my NTFS 2TB external drives. I checked the S&M sharpness pattern, and edge correction has to be set to 1. ![]() Youtube is not pre-installed on my unit and I cannot seem to find it in the Marketplace? |

USB sticks (8GB) do work, they get recognized within a minute. I only use the USB port for those instore HDR demos anyway, so I'll probably end up getting a 16GB USB stick for them. |

The 900 needed a certain firmware update before it became a vaguely competent player of external files (it couldn't even play HEVC, for ****'s sake) so hopefully the new players will get an update to enable your drives.

Wanted to get back with a few answers to previous questions on this thread.
The user set-up and save two custom user modes with the tone mapping settings: Here's how. In the picture quality setting menu, there are one standard setting mode and two custom user mode. In each two different custom user mode, tone mapping by HDR Optimizer can be used individually. The UB820/UB9000 will play UHD BD remux from a Network Audio Server with bitstreaming audio:. Here's more detail. Dolby Digital is supported when playing back the files (MKV, MP4, M2TS). However, Dolby True HD(incl. ATMOS), Dolby Digital Plus (incl. ATMOS) , DTS-HD MA (incl. DTSX) and DTS-HD HRA are not supported. The UB820 does not support HD/object audio over DLNA: When playing back over DLNA, Dolby ATMOS and object audio such as DTS:X are not supported. In the UB820/UB9000 user menu “HDMI” here's the peak luminance nit range best suited for each selection: Here's how this works. These settings are effective when HDR Optimizer is set to “ON”. Settings: “OLED” and “Mid to High Luminance LCD” => tone-mapped at 1,000nit output “Super High Luminance LCD” => tone-mapped at 1,500nit output “Basic Luminance LCD and projector” => tone-mapped at 500nit output Usually, “Mid to High Luminance LCD” or “OLED” are recommended There are some cases that “Super High Luminance LCD” is preferred when connected to high brightness HDR TV (1,000nit or more) “Basic Luminance LCD and Projector” might be preferred when connected to low luminance HDR TV and projectors (500nit or less) On a personal note, I wish everyone a happy SMPTE HDR10 tone mapping and peak luminance detail with Chroma and color volume all the way to the highest specular highlights on all TVs and projectors alike. |

Only other thing I am curious about is, will it offer a DV on/off selection, or will you be forced into DV.

Yes, it is better than the X800. I don’t know about the voltage in Portugal so I can not comment. But in terms of playing 4K discs, there is no region for 4K discs so you van buy them anywhere and play them anywhere too.

I’ve never seen a OLED (including the latest C8/E8) reaching 1,000 nits after D65 calibration. They usually top out at 700-800 nit range. |

@ShePearl, thanks for joining Blu-ray.com!
For our showroom C8, E8 and A8F demo units we use the "OLED/Mid to High Luminance LCD" so our test sample UB820 tone maps HDR10 to 1000Nits and the HDR image quality is excellent! |

The TV’s have their own tone mapping feature, Active HDR on the C8 and E8, right? So does the player’s HDR Optimizer still help if the Active HDR feature is on? Is one better than the other? |
