Can somebody point me the way to the proper settings when using this with a Sony Z9D. Broke down and bought the player today. Remember reading there were certain things you needed to do to the Panasonic and Sony.

Thanks

I’ve had ZERO problem with my 820 and 9000 but had numerous problem with Sony X700 (much less problem with X800 though). My suggestion is to try to clean the disc before playing it the first time. I’ve received too many new but lightly dusty brand new/sealed UHD. Perhaps those discs were “accidentally” dirty?
Can you explain what makes the sony A9 over Lg C9 better ? I have had the C9 for a month now and I can't stand not being able to get the flesh skin tones correct . I never had these issues with my panny plasma or cheap sony led . I may be able to exchange it but is it worth another $1k ? That is so much out of my price range . Get it professionally calibrated ...There goes what I saved on my purchase . I never had to pro-calibrate anything before and my tv's have been near perfect for what they can do with just suggested user settings or what I have been able to do on my own . C9 is driving me nuts . I might be outside my return period but the store will probably take a exchange . Any help would be highly appreciated.

Essentially: in theory no, but disc reading capability is much improved when tested using titles with known disc problem being played on x700 vs 820 vs 9000.
No problem, I appreciate all the input you’ve given me and wouldn’t mind reading a long and detailed response if you find the time. Interesting that disc reading improves going from the 820 to the 9000. I assume that’s due to build quality since they share the same processor. I’m flirting with the idea of going from the 820 to the 9000, but since I’m only using an Atmos sound bar (over eARC) and currently have no need for any higher end audio options, it’s hard to justify the additional $500 cost for build quality alone. But any video playback improvements would definitely be tempting. Well, i still have about 40 days to return/exchange the 820, so the 9000 is not completely ruled out yet. It’s definitely much more appealing to the eye than the 820, and it does look like a good mate for my A9G, but looks aren’t everything, it’s what’s inside that counts. And the 820 has a great personality.

Hey, though I’m about as far from an expert as you can get on this stuff, I do have great eyesight and a good eye for picture quality, and I own an A9G after briefly owning a C9 that i ended up returning. I never compared the sets side by side at home, but did so in the store, and i had the same question as you, “Is it really worth the extra $$$?” It really depends on your budget and how picky you are with picture quality. When i briefly had the C9 my complaints were: color, motion , and upscaling. Color just looked off, while motion and upscaling looked better on my old Sony x900E, which pissed me off to no end considering the C9 was much more expensive unit.

So i reluctantly ponied up the extra cash, and yes, the A9G was better at all of those things; it’ has natural looking color, satisfying motion, and absolutely fantastic 4K upscaling. Actually, to me, the upscaling on the A9G was worth the extra cost alone, that’s one reason i was so perturbed that the 820 doesn’t have a native resolution option for disc playback. Will having a C9 calibrated fix your color problem? I have no idea, as i said i’m no expert on that front. Having said that, while the color of the A9G is satisfying out of the box, I’ll probably get it calibrated as a Christmas gift to myself once i put enough hours on it and properly break in those pixels. So in conclusion, it was worth the extra cash to my eyes, but if the only thing thing bothering you is skin tone, i would guess that’s something you can tweak.

Edit: Sorry to other forum members for venturing off topic with this post, i’m new around here and don’t want to ruffle any feathers, just wanted to share my experience in regard to the question asked.

Yeah, turn off the Optimizer and just let the Z9D handle everything.

The disc drive of the two players are different. Vibration reduction plays a huge factor too. If I had known the 9000 is that much better, I would’ve bought two UB9000 instead of one 820 and one 9000

Others would respectfully disagree about the A9 being head and shoulders above the C9. Had them both in my home as well and chose the C9.

I think this is a simple matter of preference as both are outstanding televisions.

I purchased the 77 inch A9 and I really don't see much of a difference compared to my 65 C9 in the living room.

Sony's A9G has the best up-conversion performance from cable or any low resolution content. Sony's motion resolution is also the best. Sony's black level is lower than the C9.

Finally, Sony's built-in audio quality is very good and you can use the A9G screen as the center channel speaker if you have a surround sound system

Hello all,

I'm new and this is my first post on the forum.

I currently own an LG C8 and have a Sony X800M2. I generally like the Sony but it has been plagued with freezing issues for me. I've grown frustrated enough that I want another option.

I have been intrigued with this player for a long time. Particularly the HDR Optimizer. I think it would be a good fit for the C8. However, looking at some reviews and comments (particularly Vincent Teoh's), it seems as if Dolby Vision is too bright and blows out highlights.

My question is, would leaving Dolby Vision off and just using HDR10 in conjunction with the optimizer yield a better result than this player's implementation of Dolby Vision? Has anyone done a detailed comparison?

If the answer is yes, I could save some money and opt for the 420 which has the same video performance minus Dolby Vision.

In my extensive testing comparing A to B between DV and HDR10+Optimizer, in every case the DV produced a better image and resolved more detail. I think the "too bright" is not accurate..how do we know the Oppo isn't dimming?

I have Sony A9G

I have the sony x900f running with the 820 and notice hdr optimizer does virtually nothing. Is that cause the TV is doing the grunt work?

Must be something wrong the setup. I own a 900F coupled with an 820. The Optimizer difference is HUGE.

Any ideas what settings could be effecting the HDR optimizer?

Target luminance should be medium luminance LCD

Them while an HDR disc playing press Option and turn in HDR optimizer on

Exit that page and then press HDR button on the remote until it says “standard” on the screen.

Interesting discovery (to me at least): i was watching High Plains Drifter and had the 820 set to 1080p resolution late last night. Today when i got home i popped in San Andreas and forgot to change the resolution back to Auto, but the disc still played in HDR, it just showed 1080p resolution. Honestly i didn’t even know you could play back a 4K disc in 1080p, but the HDR playback was what really surprised me. I tried this on a DV disc (the Shining) and it worked with DV too. But at that point i just changed it back to Auto and watched the Shining all the way through as intended.

And speaking of DV: for some reason it seems to look brighter when played back on the 820 vs the x800m2 or even on my ATV4K. For example: When i played back Far from Home on the x800m2, Dolby Vision Dark looked a touch muted, while Dolby Vision Bright seemed a bit too much. I actually preferred the HDR10 version on the x800m2. But when i played back the same disc on the 820, DV Dark was plenty bright, and i never felt the need to fiddle with it.

Sorry as well to members for off topic . If anyone could direct me to the oled thread which tv would be great .

I can get my lg 55" C9 exchanged at no cost for a sony XBR-55A8G . Is this what others would do in my place ? Is there a noticeable difference from the Sony A8 vs A9 .

Those are my settings too. But i'm only noticing when there is an extremely bright flash. For example Mad Max Fury Road when there is a lightning strike. But it looks better with it off, because the with the optimizer on the lighting is toned down far too much. And some of the explosions i lose some detail in the fireballs. Is the optimizer only noticeable a small amount of time in the average HDR movie?
