So i reluctantly ponied up the extra cash, and yes, the A9G was better at all of those things; it’ has natural looking color, satisfying motion, and absolutely fantastic 4K upscaling. Actually, to me, the upscaling on the A9G was worth the extra cost alone, that’s one reason i was so perturbed that the 820 doesn’t have a native resolution option for disc playback. Will having a C9 calibrated fix your color problem? I have no idea, as i said i’m no expert on that front. Having said that, while the color of the A9G is satisfying out of the box, I’ll probably get it calibrated as a Christmas gift to myself once i put enough hours on it and properly break in those pixels. So in conclusion, it was worth the extra cash to my eyes, but if the only thing thing bothering you is skin tone, i would guess that’s something you can tweak. Edit: Sorry to other forum members for venturing off topic with this post, i’m new around here and don’t want to ruffle any feathers, just wanted to share my experience in regard to the question asked. Sony's A9G has the best up-conversion performance from cable or any low resolution content. Sony's motion resolution is also the best. Sony's black level is lower than the C9.
Finally, Sony's built-in audio quality is very good and you can use the A9G screen as the center channel speaker if you have a surround sound system |

Hello all,
I'm new and this is my first post on the forum. I currently own an LG C8 and have a Sony X800M2. I generally like the Sony but it has been plagued with freezing issues for me. I've grown frustrated enough that I want another option. I have been intrigued with this player for a long time. Particularly the HDR Optimizer. I think it would be a good fit for the C8. However, looking at some reviews and comments (particularly Vincent Teoh's), it seems as if Dolby Vision is too bright and blows out highlights. My question is, would leaving Dolby Vision off and just using HDR10 in conjunction with the optimizer yield a better result than this player's implementation of Dolby Vision? Has anyone done a detailed comparison? If the answer is yes, I could save some money and opt for the 420 which has the same video performance minus Dolby Vision. |

I have the sony x900f running with the 820 and notice hdr optimizer does virtually nothing. Is that cause the TV is doing the grunt work?

Any ideas what settings could be effecting the HDR optimizer?

Interesting discovery (to me at least): i was watching High Plains Drifter and had the 820 set to 1080p resolution late last night. Today when i got home i popped in San Andreas and forgot to change the resolution back to Auto, but the disc still played in HDR, it just showed 1080p resolution. Honestly i didn’t even know you could play back a 4K disc in 1080p, but the HDR playback was what really surprised me. I tried this on a DV disc (the Shining) and it worked with DV too. But at that point i just changed it back to Auto and watched the Shining all the way through as intended.
And speaking of DV: for some reason it seems to look brighter when played back on the 820 vs the x800m2 or even on my ATV4K. For example: When i played back Far from Home on the x800m2, Dolby Vision Dark looked a touch muted, while Dolby Vision Bright seemed a bit too much. I actually preferred the HDR10 version on the x800m2. But when i played back the same disc on the 820, DV Dark was plenty bright, and i never felt the need to fiddle with it. I can get my lg 55" C9 exchanged at no cost for a sony XBR-55A8G . Is this what others would do in my place ? Is there a noticeable difference from the Sony A8 vs A9 . |

Those are my settings too. But i'm only noticing when there is an extremely bright flash. For example Mad Max Fury Road when there is a lightning strike. But it looks better with it off, because the with the optimizer on the lighting is toned down far too much. And some of the explosions i lose some detail in the fireballs. Is the optimizer only noticeable a small amount of time in the average HDR movie?
