Sorry I'm away from my showroom, but wanted to reply as quickly as possible. For Sony and LG I believe the "Active" HDR10 mode is always active and can't be disabled.
I'll double check when I get to my showroom. Edit, ok, just double checked and LG and Sony OLED TVs are always "Active" when in the HDR10 mode. This feature, which measures the peak luminance frame-by-frame can not be disabled. The advantage of sending the HDR10 PQ curve tone mapped to the TV's peak luminance ability helps significantly with LG and Sony OLED TVs to roll off the peak lumens for a more natural looking image with detail and color volume all the way to the highest peak luminance of the content. In all of my UB820 engineering reports I stressed the importance of Dolby Vision Profile 4 and 5 to be enabled so this player will be compatible with Sony low latency HDR. A few weeks ago I was told it was not necessary to remind them about DV's low latency protocol. So I took that as good news.
The last update I got suggested they may not be ready at launch with DV, but if they don't launch with DV it will be available by late fall via a firmware upgrade. I have not followed the EU launch but if anyone know if the UB820/UB824 has DV please post. |

On a related note, there is some recent news concerning the display manager side of things with beta FW on the LG 2016 OLED B6/C6/E6. ![]() |

Hello Robert.
I see that you have a Sony VW5000ES projector in your store. I have one my in my home theater as well. It is an amazing projector with capabilities that exceed most other 4K HDR projectors. What has your experience been with using the Sony VW5000ES projector with the Panasonic UB820 4K player? What HDR Optimizer settings have you found work best with this projector? I recognize that the quality of a projected HDR image is dependent upon a variety of factors independent of the projector (screen size, projector throw distance, ambient light, gain of the screen, etc.). Nevertheless, what settings have you found work best in your store setup? Thank you! Last edited by kingofhearts; 06-20-2018 at 01:57 AM. |

@kingofhearts, glad to see you joining Blu-ray.com!
I've tested the UB820 with our VW5000ES with the HDR Optimizer "on" and set to Super High Luminance LCD and with the HDR Optimizer set to off so no HDR10 tone mapping. My findings vary from BD to BD and varies on which HDR streaming content I'm testing. For most HDR10 content I slightly prefer the HDR10 image with the Optimizer set to Super High Luminance. I would have expected the Optimizer off would be best as the VW5000ES is capable to put out 5,000 lumens, but with the UB820 set to Super High Luminance appeared to look best with most HDR10 content. My screen is a unity gain 133" 16:9 and the room is light controlled. |

Would it be possible to find out what the HDR TV Type setting does when the output is SDR/BT2020?

I have a question regarding the Panasonic DP-UB820EG which I received on 2018-06-01 here in Sweden.
Will it ever receive a firmware update with support for Dolby Digital Plus over USB? I know that it is possible to convert Dolby Digital Plus to the Regular Dolby Digital, but the audio quality loss is too noticeable for my taste. If they don't fix this, I'm sad to say that I will have to sell this player and buy another brand with this support. That is the only negative feeling I have towards this player at the moment, every other thing is superb, except the current lack of common apps and Dolby Vision support of course. |

Yes, the player is bought here in Sweden. I did pre-order it and the store was not supposed to get any in stock until July, but I got lucky when they received a small early batch. |

Just spoke today to my Panasonic contacts about a loan of one UB9000 engineer production unit. The UB9000 is a ultra high-end FHD/SDR and UHD/HDR Blu-ray, audio CD and of course DVD when needed.
I look at this device as an ultra high end video (Netflix, Amazon, Youtube, etc) and Hi Res and Tidal MQA audio streaming hub with a very nice optical drive for the most premium UHD/HDR playback. |
