Would you recommend turning off Dolby Vision and setting the 820 to OLED for display type?

If you have Dolby Vision available for whatever disc then I would default to that.

I have a Sony x950g. i tried the optimizer on guardians of the galaxy and green book across various scenes (bright scenes, night scenes). I’m flipping between it on and off and I see zero perceptible differences (and trust me, im looking closely!) Am I missing something? (These movies are HDR10)

Well, what’s your player and TV settings? How can we help if you don’t give the full information of your settings?

If you've got the player set to 'Middle or High Luminance' then that's 1000 nits. I think I'm right in saying that both of those discs you mention were mastered out to 1000-nit max mastering display level, ergo when you turn on the Optimiser it will literally do nothing (except add a fraction of banding if you know where to look). You need to play something mastered in >1000 nits for it to kick in.

[edit]

According to your collection you've got Batman v Superman, Fury Road and Close Encounters, all were mastered with 4000-nit displays and go plenty bright, way higher than 1000 nits at certain moments. Try it on bright scenes in those, though FYI the Optimiser isn't there to change dark scenes because it's passing through the sub-1000-nit part of the signal 'as is' and only touching the information above 1000 nits. Even the lower nit modes e.g. 'Basic LCD' = 500 nits should show no difference in the darker scenes as they're well below 500 nits, although as the Optimiser inserts brand-new metadata into the signal then that may actually help with a TV that does a very poor mapping of 'SDR in HDR container' stuff like Goodfeathers. Not so much your Sony but older and/or lower-spec sets.

Thanks for the answer. I think that explains it well. I actually set the player to the Super High luminance, but I'm not 100% sure it's the right setting. I believe High Luminance is 1000 nits and super high is 1500. My TV is about 1200 nits.

Lol didn't even know my collection was public. Good thing I've got good taste.

I will try what you suggest. Thanks!

Exact same thing applies, as the metadata on those two specific discs is actually lower than the level you've set the Optimiser to start at, if that makes sense? So you still need something with >1500 nit metadata in order for the Optimiser to do anything.

[edit] FWIW I've got the Light Cannon™ ZD9 but the 1500 nit setting on the Panny is too high for my TV, as even though it can hit ~1800 nits for peak luminance it starts to lose colour volume way before that, I'd say it does about 1200 nits of brightness and colour so without being able to tailor the output of the Optimiser for a specific light level I prefer to use the 'Middle or High' 1000-nit setting. (Not that it'd make any difference with Guardians or Green Book anyway, but you get the idea.)

Just tried Close Encounters (any reason is valid to rewatch my favorite movie of all time) and now can see the changes, for example in bright light bulbs where instead of a bright blur, I now see the filament inside the bulb... (perhaps at some highlights sacrificed)

It's pretty cool.

Your TV is medium luminance, not super high luminance.

I just had my first glitches with Fury Road where the picture got all pixelated. Then I put A new Hope and MI3 and they both got garbled sound after a few minutes. I unplugged the player and put MSi3 again and it seems ok now.

Not sure what happened.

What nit values correspond to which TV settings in the 820 (low, medium, super high, etc)?
And what type of pattern is used to determine/measure nit? 10% window?

So for titles in 1000 nits is the Panasonic optimizer going to make a difference if used over the DTM on LG OLEDS?

I thought I read somewhere that oled is only 700. But I surely could be misremembering. It's been known to happen. From time to time.

Looks interesting especially since it disables the auto shut off, but having to solder it in makes it a no go for me. I’d be all over something that is plug and play like the Oppo mods.
