Dude, I've been using this workaround for like 10 years already on various Pannies. And I'm telling you it's not a magic wand that works on everything.

I'm just saying if you've tried it using that method. I don't see anyone else that's given it a go.

What makes you think I haven't tried that with whatever disc that didn't work? Again: 10 years. I'll explain it in gif terms, you understand those right?

Found a disc the top menu trick doesn’t work for. Appears to be the only one in my current collection and the only distributor I didn’t check before giving my region free player to my father. The disc is Madman’s release of The Leopard that was from the Film Foundation’s restoration. Also tried the player settings trick to no avail.

So guys. Needing some advice here.
I'll recap; my projector is BenQ W1720. Its a 4K 100% Rec709 with HDR. I tried using SDR2020 but did not look good since the projector does not access to the fake "wider gamut" unless is detecting a HDR signal. Then I tried SDR709 but I started to notice some banding, like compression artifacts and didn't like that. But nevertheless HDR mode look so good on my projector compared to SDR.

So... I tend to use the HDR optmizer ON, and with just some very fine adjustments on some of the sliders. But of course when I use the optimizer the image loses some of its POP, but looks more accurate of course. Recently I've been reading about experts not recommending to overlap two different tone mappings. Now, my projector doesn't really "tone map" per-se, meaning there's no curves section on the projector, nor has any kind of dynamic tone mapping option when its on HDR mode.

My question is. Am I still overlapping two different tone mappings if I turn the Optimizer On? Again, my projector doesn't have curves controls or anything like that. Should I only use one or the other?

I think (read: maybe) it's because your projector is only doing REC709 SDR2020 require a projector that can do P3 within the REC2020 container.

Yeah, I mean. My real concern is that in using the HDR OPTMIZER on HDR mode I may be overlapping two different HDR mappings (one from the player and one from the projector) and downgrading the experience by doing so. But I dont know if my projector is actually tone mapping anything since it doesn't have curves controls or any sort of dynamic tone mapping function, its like "uncontrolled" HDR.

Output as SDR709 and calibrate the projector for 709 with a 2.2 gamma. DO NOT USE AN HDR MODE ON THE PROJECTOR when you do this. Then use the slider in the Optimizer to fine tune your tone map to your taste.

Thanks Kris, I'll try this again. Last time I used SDR709 I started to notice these rings, like banding in backgrounds, moving as the scenes moved, which are not present when I use HDR mode (backgrounds look perfectly clean). I guess those are compression artifacts but couldn't solved them. I use Deep Color 12 priority with 4K YCbCr 4:4:4. Anything that I should change? Am I sending too much unnecessary information?

EDIT: Well, I dont know what happened last time but I’m not seeing the banding anymore. Maybe a kind of handshake issue? Idk, but h sh.. it looks gorgeous. All color is back, King Kong (2005) looks finally amazing in the projector. Thanks so much Kris.

So I have had this player for a few months now and have primarily enjoyed it. The one issue I am still dealing with is Audio Sync. I've done a tone of experimenting and have determined that I believe the issue to be around UHD and BD content that uses DTS as primary sound source (Dolby and LPCM both seem fine).

*My setup: UB820 ---> HDMI ---> TCL R635 TV ---> Yamaha Yas-207 Soundbar (via eARC HDMI Port)
*UB820 Audio Output is set to Bitstream for Dolby and DTS with Secondary Audio turned off.
*In order for films using a DTS track to sync properly, I have to set the Audio Delay to 130 MS in the UB820 options.

Surely there has to be a solution to get DTS Audio to sync properly, right? Or do others also have to set the Audio Delay to 130 MS? It just feels weird that I would have to switch this every time I go to watch a movie if using a Dolby track versus a DTS track.

I have had zero issue with lag when watching content via the TV through Netflix, Prime or Apple TV--just sync issues with the 820UB.

Films I have tested over the past few weeks:

The Shining - UHD (DTS Track with lag at 0MS. Works fine at 130MS)

Rear Window - UHD (DTS Track with lag at 0MS. Works fine at 130MS)

Blade Runner - UHD (Dolby Track with Lag at 130 MS. Works fine at 0MS)

Seventh Seal - Criterion BD (LPCM Track with zero lag at 0MS and 130MS)

Manhunter - ShoutFactory BD (DTS Track with lag at 0MS. Works fine at 130MS)

Funny how sync issues keep popping up for people who use ARC to route the UHD player's audio from the TV to the sound device. I'd never use ARC for that, always a direct connection from player to sound device.

I think I'll wait till the 820 drops back down to $400. Then return mine for the freezing issues through my Geek Squad warranty. I should just get store credit for $150. Then pick up the 820 for about $250.

If you have any kind of soundbar or AVR, it's always best and recommended to use that as the pass-through device or HDMI switch.

All you're doing now is adding variables to the mix and likely complicating it. It also allows them to communicate more seamlessly and auto lip sync to work as designed.

@Kris Deering - So given my projector is 4K 709 native, I'm using HDR to SDR709 output, and looks great in my 120" screen in a darkned room. I first thought of set the Dynamic Range Conversion slider at +6, but then after playing around with it I may settle on +8, it gives me great brightness and even better contrast for my projector.

Is this common? I mean a projector looking better at +8 in the dynamic range conversion slider? Idk why I have a feeling I'm setting it too far, but images look great. Am I doing it right?

I will try this and see if things improve. Another random question for you. For Digital Audio Out on my UB820, I have both DTS and Dolby set to Bitstream (as opposed to PCM). Is there a preference on that? Do I loose sound quality if I go to PCM?

I have audio sync issues with my 820 going directly to my Denon X1400h which goes to my C8. But it's all audio streams so I have my denon set to a 85ms lag. I also find it odd that I need to do this at all, but have gotten over it.

And do you have lag with DTS and Dolby formats?

There is no Magnolia warranty swap, and that other person must have had a Geek Squad warranty. That's the only time they'll do it in-store.

The most Best Buy could do for me is ship it to Panasonic, and I'd be looking at 4-6 week turnaround. Not happy with Best Buy Geek Squad chat at all.

I will update with info on my inevitable Panasonic experience, unless this is considered off-topic?
Got around to contacting Panasonic. They are having me ship it to a repair location to be evaluated for either repair or replacement, and the shipping TO Panasonic is on my dime.
