That looks EXACTLY like Panasonic's first Ultra HD Blu-ray player, the DMP-UB900.

Hi Guys...

I'm currently using my Panasonic UB9000 with a non-4k Pioneer KURO KRP-600A plasma TV.

I'm currently using the UB9000 in SDR mode...
Is it worth me using HDR and the HDR Optimizer (considering the KURO is not 4k)?
Is so... what setting(s) would you suggest I use?

Thank you!

You won't be able to output HDR to an SDR display as far as I know, but you can make use of the equivalent of the HDR Optimizer with HDR to SDR conversion (I think it's DR Conversion Adjustment), so you can tweak the contrast and brightness to suit your needs.

I'll take his word for it but maybe he doesn't want to spill the beans just yet. Obviously if Panasonic quit making BD,UHD players and it's confirmed that wouldn't be good for physical media.

Panasonic is not exiting the Blu-ray player market. It's a very active product category for Panasonic.

Great, if only they were "pro" active with their firmware support & restore some consumer confidence, any word Robert from Japan's engineers in terms of a potential fix for the reported issues pertaining to the Dolby Vision bug?

Yeah, there's a difference between something being 'active' and 'just leaving it in the corner of the room and hope no-one notices it'. Covid gonna covid, yes, but clearly nothing's stopping them from working on new TVs etc.

Even if these DV bugs can't be solved in firmware at least they could formally announce it and go on to say that they're working with the authoring houses to make sure that it doesn't happen again. I'd settle for that.

The situation is nowhere near as bad in the far east as in the west.

Thank you Robert. When I bought my 820 a couple of days ago, the dealer told me they were not going to be manufacturing Bluray Players anymore.

I was going to buy the player regardless, so I believed him. As Panasonic has exited the tv market in North America, which is why I didn’t think he was wrong.

The least they could do is release the newest firmware for everyone. It’s been done for a year now right?

I have an LG C8. I’m finally going to open this player tonight. What’s the consensus with using the HDR Optimizer and the TVs dynamic tone mapping? I’ve read conflicting views. Some say to use both others say the Pannys and dynamic off or the pannys isn’t worth it and use the TVs. Thanks for the insight

Personally, I find LG's dynamic tonemapping atrocious and an affront to HDR in general. They shift everything down in brightness in an attempt to preserve highlight contrast. The result, to me, is extremely "cramped" and low contrast midtones and shadow tones. I highly recommend turning off LG dynamic tonemapping and setting HDR Optimizer on the Panasonic UHD player. Other brands, like Sony, don't reduce APL as much in their television's dynamic tonemapping so the Panasonic HDR Optimizer has less of an effect. Sony tries to clip/blend the highlights directly rather than shift the whole tone curve down like LG does. Check out the HDTV test review on the HDR Optimizer feature; he tests it on an LG television and you'll see what I mean.

I keep tone mapping off on my CX and use the HDR optimizer on the 820. It's a harder decision with other HDR devices that don't have the optimizer. I do use it for my PS5.

So no new Panasonic 4K Blu-ray models this year, and next year.
Firmware Updates is the future, along with 4K streaming.

* I wonder where Sony stands ...
