Well, I'm really excited I've just found the solution thanks to a similar problem on another board with an older DVD player, and it's quite simple.
I thought the solution was in color space or color depth conversion but it is just in the brightness control of the player! In fact, when it is at o setting, it is already perfectly set and does not show the below black, because it is already calibrated. As soon as you boost the brightness the below black level starts to appear. When I boosted brightness on my display I could not see any below black bar and I mistakenly thought that it was because the player did not pass Pluge but it did. You just have to interact with both display's and player's brightness control to find the sweet spot and be able to properly calibrate your display for the UB9000. It's funny because my other players did not behave like that, but that means it is perfectly calibrated to black at default setting. I'm glad I learnt that today, and I hope it may be of use to someome.with the same issue! |

My guess is any disc from a decent sized distributor has got this kind of blocking control on it. I'm assuming it's only smaller studio discs where the workaround works. I have an Oppo 103 for my 3D blurays, wish I had bought a region free mod back when they were $50... |

It's weird. For me, it makes things a heck of a lot better. It doesn't always brightens things. It will dim them or brighten depending on the content and no matter what it seems to give me proper specular highlights.

All that matters is how you want/like it. If you have Starz, watch the Luminaries, and toggle it off/on to see a big difference. I'm used to Plasma's, and just got used to dimmer settings.

If everyone could just pay and get the firmware there'd be no issue, but if you don't apply for it under the light of a crescent moon on the last day of Autumn whilst smearing yourself in chicken guts and chanting 'ohwhatatwitiam' there's no guarantee. |
