I went ahead and reset it and after decided to upgrade the firmware from 1.64 to the chinese 1.66 to see if it would fix the issue as someone else here suggested it could be a software glitch. Knock wood, it seems to be working as it should atm and is reading discs when powered on with a disc inside. Figured it was worth a try after looking in to Panasonic's repair options in Canada being a bit of a PITA barrier and it working perfectly otherwise.

This is only objective; no two people have the same two sets of identical ears with the two same emotional music level intensity from the heart and soul, none.
The 9000 simply measures better, much better...closer to the Oppo 205.
I did often mentioned that the 9000 sounds better than the 820 but I usually only get laughed at. It’s nice to know that what I’m hearing vs objective measurement are in line.

The guy doing the measurements (Amir) is using one of the best tools in the business.
The Panasonic 9000 and the Oppo 205 measure excellently from their Audio sections.
Of course the Oppo is universal (SACD & DVD Audio support) and a bit more expensive and discontinued. But the Oppo 205 didn't sport a video "Oppomizer"* like in the Panasonic 9000.

* Optomizer

It's true that you mentioned few times before that the 9000 sounds very good to your ears.
And it's true also that others weren't that impressed by its stereo sound quality.
Different set of ears different set of stereo setups.

Anyway, measurements are a strong base for a comfortable ease in life.
That with the music we love. Let the music flow unaltered, raw, naturel, full.

Because music matters, not just a pretty picture.

The 9000 also benefits from mods, to make it an even higher end audio/video discs spinner.

Hey Guys,

I just installed the 820 in my rack/system last night. Killer player. Just about does everything. The swiss army knife of players. It even outperforms my two Oppo BDP103D's on S&M tests.

Quick question:
I have an older projector which will do 4K at 8bit. No Dolby Vision or HDR of any kind. When I switch off DV and HDR10+ on the 820's HDMI setup does any of that data go through a conversion to SDR?

Congrats!

If you are attaching to a display with no HDR capabilities then the player converts HDR content to SDR automatically as the HDMI handshake tells the player there is no form of HDR support on the other end. There are minor adjustments that can be made in the HDR to SDR conversion.

Good to know. Colours do look more intense than blu-ray. So the player does it nicely.

Volume output was very hot. I guessed about 5db hot so I adjusted in my AVR. Anyone else found that?
I feel like the bass is a little lacking compared to Blu-ray. It might just be me. Is there some sound processor function in the player I need to look at? I just want the sound to be sent untouched and let the AVR do it’s stuff

Choosing bitstream option does exactly that.

Thanks mate.

I chose exactly that. It must just be me and the movies I chose to watch were just a little base light or something.

Sound level was definitely 5-6db hotter than blu-ray or what the Oppo BDP103D's sends. That is an easy fix through the AVR tho.

Secondary Audio and Dynamic Range Control should also be disabled in the player.

If your receiver is new enough, you should also turn off any Dynamic Range Control (can be under Dolby headings) and Dynamic EQ and/or Dynamic Volume settings within the receiver itself as well.

Secondary Audio is off.

I noted a little bug with the firmware regarding Dynamic Range Control firmware. I like lights out on my players. If you chose lights out and DRC is on the lights go out as selected. If you chose DRC off and lights off the light come on and stay on.
I guess I will turn DRC off and put black tape on the inside flap. That will do lights out.

If your machine starts acting strangely, which mine did after I just turned it on for the first time in weeks, just hold the Standby/on switch for 3 seconds, then it should work normally again.

Due to the 820 being so great I have ordered the 9000.
New stock arrives late April.

The 820 will slay 4K discs for the next 6 weeks.

So I know the 9000 and 820 are pretty much identical in terms of disc playback capabilities. (And I don't have a use for the additional audio outputs) But I'm interested to know the real world differences in terms of operation noise and the drive itself.

Is the 9000 drive a higher end component than in the 820?

Also, my 820 is not loud by any means, but if there is a very quiet scene, I can hear the unit when playing 4K discs. Nothing excessive, mind you, but is the 9000 noticeably quieter when playing UHD?

The UB9000 internal drive looks and feels much more rigid and high-end than the UB820. I don’t have the pic anymore but I used to have them as they showed them at CES2018 (I think)

The DP-UB9000 uses the same drive as the DP-UB820 but with a rubberized tray, a higher-quality tray motor and more sound insulation.

I thought it was supposed to have improved error correction as well.

It’s a completely different drive. Even dirty discs that can’t be played on my 820 can be played no problem with the 9000.

Look just how similar they are in the pictures in the above post. Can't you see the black plastic near the front beneath the DP-UB9000's "Premium Model" silver plate? In the video below, at 6:50, this user inserts a BD-66 disc into his DP-UB820 and records the drive sounds. After the disc goes in, my UB9000 makes exactly the same sounds as his UB820 only the UB9000 is significantly more insulated. However, the mechanism that opens and closes the tray is clearly different, with the UB9000's being noticeably higher-quality, and unlike the UB820's plastic tray, the UB9000's tray is rubberized and feels much more disc-friendly especially to CDs and DVDs.
