Who knows if the directors have anything to do with most HDR grades? Besides, given how poor the tone mapping is in some sets the forced DV couldn't be any worse in mangling the "intent".

Robert, Do you expect the Dolby Vision update to be available before the UB9000 ships? If I'm going to wait until Dolby Vision is available, maybe I should just get the UB9000? Of course, it will need to support DV profile 5.

Can't say for sure. The last update I got says fall of 2018 for the DV update and I expect it will be profile 5, low latency capable.

I hope they give a toggle for DV vs HDR10, so you can make the choice yourself.

Not to scare you but that implies anytime from late Sept to Christmas. Also take note how few players support the latest Sony DV operation. Yes there are DV capable players that still don’t have the Sony update.

Does the HDR Opt only work on disc-based content, or does it apply to HDR10 streaming apps like Netflix too?

I'm really hoping Panasonic adds vudu streaming to this player. I have a couple of UHD titles. I'm currently using roku stick and it's too buggy syncing with the JVC.

I'm using the Nvidia Shield TV which is amazing at being able to dial in the exact HDMI settings you need for your particular display. I get HDR with all the apps. VUDU, Amazon, and Netflix. I think the problem is that VUDU sends 24hz HDR and Netflix sends 60hz HDR so I have to keep switching HDMI settings when I desire HDR content on one or the other.

Since the chipset is limited on the Epson 5040 i'm using I have to run
1080p 59hz 12 Bit 4:2:2 to get HDR from Netflix.

Other than Netflix I run 4k 24hz 12 Bit 4:2:2 as the maximum.

Robert confirmed for me today that the 820 will have no problem disabling the 60hz rate so that 4k 24hz 12 Bit 4:2:2 can be passed to my PJ.

Just a general question with the projector use and the her optimizer. Do you run the projectors with gamma correction off, so no in built or custom gamma curves? So you are basically getting the player to enforce the gamma curve?

I have HDR test patterns from R. Masciola so i'll be popping those in with Bright Cinema Mode settings back to default, running HDR test patterns while having optimizer on and see how the clipping is with black clipping and white clipping patterns. Someone mentioned they were able to max out the contrast setting on their PJ without having any clipping due to the optimizer being on. This intrigues me because it should theoretically give the overall picture more brightness but without clipping the bright areas of an image which would normally be a mess with contrast maxed.

I have reverted back to using the default internal HDR gamma curve instead of custom curves myself since I got the Panasonic 820/824.

I haven't thought about trying the HDR optimizer with gamma correction off. In theory it should be possible with the current 2017 Sony 4K projectors. I'm guessing this works the same on your 550/675ES.

Are we talking about simply putting the displays Gamma back to 0 ? I have an epson so maybe I'm missing something you guys are talking about here with the PJ gamma on sony's. Epson doens't have gamma "correction" but it does allow for custom curves.

On the Sony you have a variety of gamma settings (1.8 to 2.6 and four more presets) but you can also choose to disable it, so no gamma correction at all. Then there's the default HDR gamma curve and you can also load your own custom curves into the projector.

Yeah, it is a bit counterintuitive. If you are using a standard uhd player, you can either have HDR mode on, and the projector selects some unknown gamma curve, or more people have HDR mode off, and set it to bt2020 and select a custom gamma curve. I guess with gamma off it would just be a straight line for gamma. No one knows what gamma it uses for her mode though, but the results are better currently with thr custom curves.
