I have no idea how any of you got this to work. The only USB flash drives I have are exFAT (usually 100gb+) and although they all work with video or photos, none of them seem to have any effect when the firmware file (PANAEUSB) is inserted (on its own with nothing else on the flash drive).

I'm on a 820 US model.

EDIT: I think I get it. The proper file for US players might be this one:
https://av.jpn.support.panasonic.com.../ub420_us.html

They write the following:
Format the USB device by FAT12, FAT16 and FAT32 file system on a Microsoft Windows PC.
(Please do not format by NTFS or exFAT file system.)

Not sure what I can do then since my drives can't format into anything other than NTFS or exFAT. I wish the option to use the internet to download would work, but it doesn't.

Just updated both 820 and 9004 and the Dolby Vision issues appear to finally be resolved.

How does it work when you put a USB flash drive with the update file? Does it update automatically or does it start a launcher?

I found a prehistoric flash drive that I was able to format in FAT32. I then transferred the firmware file to it and inserted it into the front of the UB820. The screen went black and various messages appear on the LCD screen of the 820 (currently has a flashing W MAIN).

EDIT Ok looks like it finished and worked. Fantastic.

Very happy for all you Panny owners to finally get some support!

Gives me hope that maybe Sony will step up and release firmware that enables auto DV switching. (well, not really- maybe just a small hope)

Anyway- congrats!

Out of morbid curiosity I put in the defective Donnie Darko theatrical cut disc and the new firmware didn't fix it. Since some players were able to handle it was wondering if it was a firmware issue

How long does the update take via USB? Plugged it in to my 420 and the front LED started flashing and 30 minutes later it's still giving me HAL 9000 vibes.

Might depend on the flash drive read speeds. For me it took about 5-8 minutes. You’ll know when it’s over cause it should say finished on the little lcd panel. At that point I unplugged and powered off.

However, some newer mods use third-party firmware hacks (not to be confused with the old remote hacks) that only get firmware updates from whomever modded the firmware (220 itself or someone else). In that case, you'll have to wait for the firmware modder to apply its hack to the 1.69 firmware & make it available for download. In that case, installing official firmware via USB will likely remove the region-free capability.

I own a 220-modded UB820 myself, but I'm not sure which method they used -- especially since the region selection on the remote does NOT reboot the player (more likely with firmware mods than mod chips) and IIRC it does NOT have the customary external sticker saying it's been modded (used with mod chips as opening the case technically voids the factory warranty, though 220 will usually honor it anyway).

If you can't get firmware 1.69 on your modded UB820 via direct download in the next few days, I'd suggest contacting 220 before installing it via USB. 220 offers a lifetime warranty on its mods just in case (especially with sneaky memory location issues on mod chips), but installing official firmware via USB over modded firmware could jeopardize its region-free status.
Thanks for the message, I’m not sure which I have either (bought earlier this year) but it didn’t break the region free on it (tried a masters of cinema region 2 after changing regions and it still worked).
Mine also works in that you change the region while it’s already on by pressing 1 or 2 with the disc tray open.

Edit: turns out I was wrong. It did break the region free. I guess I’ll have to contact 220. The previous disc I tried was probably just not region locked.

Yeah wish I had seen your message before doing it cause I applied it throughout the house so now none of the devices can play my Region B and R2 discs lol. I hope 220 will be of help.

Couldn't get it to update through the stick, but I unplugged it and did it through the internet. Will give it a shot later.

I'm sure they'll sort it out. Firmware updates shouldn't affect the mod, you don't have to reset the region code?

Is this basically the firmware update that China has had for some time or did Panasonic add some newer patches?

I tried the IT Vertigo and it still goes to shit when it hits that layer change around Chapter 20 (with my 420).
