Since Sony is using an LG OLED panel, I'm not sure if the flickering issue shows up with Sony displays.
Again: didn't he say that the 709 subsampling issue affects ALL player implementations of DV which is why he swerves using it completely?

I would need to cull through and see if I can find the exact discussion again.

Just had a look back thru the S&M UHD thread and yes, it's Dobly on disc in general that he's not a fan of because of the poor conversion from 4:2:0 to 4:2:2 inside the DV engine, plus the incorrectly sited chroma values that use the 709 arrangement instead of 2020. And the OPPO has its own bugs in DV on top of that. He also said that the Pannysonic doesn't clip on his LG display.

What is the Oppo DV bug?

It’s been rare I experience issues with Dolby Vision on my setup and the reported issues here are not limited to OLEDs. I wouldn’t consider Dolby Vision to be the sole reason to update a display. The processing of Dolby Vision and tone mapping of HDR10 content is most important. The 820 has been incredibly reliable for me, I never have issues like freezing or glitching that prevents me from watching a disc. The Halloween movies are the first time I’ve experienced a disc with Dolby Vision issues where the HDR10 presentation has poor compression. Previously I have been more than happy watching a problematic disc in HDR10.

Shout just responded to my email about the Halloween issues:

“Some customers have noticed a flicker throughout the image on their 4K discs in the HALLOWEEN series.

Customer have had success eliminating the flicker by turning off the HDR10+ SETTING on in their disc players menu and also making sure their firmware in their player is completely up to date.”

I’ve never turned on HDR10+ and firmware update did not help

I use the A90j Sony oled and it’s the best picture I’ve ever seen on any display format. No Dolby vision flickering issues either (the few that had them got fixed in 1.69). The Halloween discs run perfectly too.

That's great news about you getting it back with patched 1.69 though. I guess that means the rest of us can expect it to come online any day now.
No worries, didn't arrive today even though FedEx said it would (), hopefully tomorrow since it's in my city. I'll post here to verify it's on 1.69 with region free. I really had no idea the online updates would pull third party firmware. How does it get set up that way?

Hey guys, is there a way please to play US Blu-ray disks on Panasonic UB820 Region B player? I’m in UK and I just got the Friday 13th scream factory box set from USA, it has 12 movies in it and only the last two are playing, rest says invalid region on the screen, so Dissapointed as was looking forward to watch them, hopefully someone can help?

Thanks

USA is region A. Of course they won’t play.

Alright, got it back from 220 and can confirm region free on 1.69.

Same with my setup of the LG GX OLED, and my Panny 9000. My display is also calibrated.

What are the odds of the UB9000 going on sale this holiday season? Slim to none? I feel like they have just stayed at full MSRP since the supply chain shortages began...

Companies only drop down pricing when a product can’t sell at full MSRP. If they can’t even have enough stock to fulfill the full-price demand, they won’t drop their price.

Different topic, but I reset my settings and forgot what your recommendation was for chroma and edge correction. I believe it was -1 for chroma and +1 for edge correction.

1. Correct?
2. Both HDR and SDR?

Cheers

Just do the chroma to -1. I haven't used the Edge Correction for years as it causes moiré.

Panasonic had lowered it to $899 a couple of years ago but with chip shortages I wouldn’t count on another promotion anytime soon.
