B and H Photo out of New York is one of the best companies in the high-end consumer electronics industry. I have been purchasing things from them for around 20 years. Excellent customer service and they double box everything. They currently since at least Black Friday have had the Panasonic BP-UB820K for sale for only $459.99 plus free shipping. Because of inflation I do not believe we will see a $350 to $399 sale price on the player from anyone (I could be wrong). But the Panasonic 4K Blu-ray player are awesome players as long as one does not own any SACD’s and DVD-Audio discs. People love the Panasonics auto Dolby Vision HDR, HDR10+, tone mapping, and 7.1 analog audio outputs. Panasonic is the only in production 4K Blu-ray player on the market that offers HDR10+. Also excellent build quality.

I'll spot you everything except build quality. They're just okay in that regard.

The UB9000 for $999 has better build quality then the UB820.

Well sure, but it's $999 and the Oppo 203 has equivalent build quality and it was almost half that.

Finally bit the bullet and purchased this from Best Buy today. What is the best HDMI cable to get for this thing?

I’m just curious, what additional benefits do you mean?

Any UHD certified cable (with the barcode). Just select whether you need 48gbps (HDMI 2.1) or 18gbps (HDMI 2.0).

Thank you. I have a Samsung Q80 so a 2.0 should do.

I sold my Sony UBP-X800M2, and got the Panasonic UB820 this weekend, and so far I'm loving it except one tiny issue.

I'm not sure if this has been discussed before, but here's my set up, I have the player connected to my Sony HT-ST5000 sound bar, while the sound bar is connected to my TCL R635 TV.

Of course, I set the player to bitstream both Dolby and DTS sound tracks, so my tiny issue is, when I'm playing a movie that has an LPCM Mono track, Criterion's new 4K Citizen Kane release for example, the player would actually convert it to an LPCM 5.1 or 7.1 track before sending it to the sound bar.

I tried a few things in the setting, but nothing seems to fix that: it seems the player simply placed the single channel into a 5.1 shell, meaning the sound only comes out from the center channel anyway, so I can live with that if that's just how it is. Nevertheless, I just want to make sure if there is or isn't a setting I haven't touched yet.

That's normal and the way it is. Don't worry, it's just a container but you're only getting a mono content thru the center channel but the 5.1 LPCM is only a container.

Anyone with a 820 that has experienced playback issues with any of the 4K discs in The Game of Thrones 4K The Complete Collection set? Or do they playback flawlessly? I am assuming that the 4K discs are the same for the European and US markets but I don't know for sure...

The Panasonic 4K Blu-ray players should in theory start selling very will now, and some places might become out of stock even at full price of $500 and $1,000. All major websites are now out of stock on the Sony UBP-X800M2 that was selling for around $198 with free shipping. In addition, that Sony $100 instant rebate expires today. There will not be any Sony’s left by the end of the day in theory, and if there are the Sony’s go back up to the $300+ price range tomorrow. While the Sony’s had the advantage of SACD and DVD-Audio playback. Consumers that do not need those two audiophile features, prefer the Panasonic models.

Panasonic offers the following features that are not found on any Sony 4K Blu-ray player: auto Dolby Vision HDR, HDR10+, tone mapping, and 7.1 analog audio outputs. Plus Panasonic has a nice LED front display.

I see B and H Photo marked the Panasonic DP-UB820 back up to the full price of $499.99 (was $459.99 for black Friday). The Panasonic DP-UB9000 is also $999.99. Some places are running out of stock on these players since there is not that many available.

OPPO, Sony, and Panasonic make excellent quality 4K Blu-ray players that offer flawless playback for the latest 100GB triple layer Blu-ray discs. I have used the 2016 OPPO with a massive amount of 100GB 4K Blu-ray discs and never had a problem since Feb of 2021. A family member that I know also has used the 2017 Sony UBP-X800 with 100GB discs and no issues. While I have family members that still own a 2010 Panasonic Blu-ray players that work fine, I do not personally own a Panasonic 4K Blu-ray player. But its my understanding that the Panasonic 4K Blu-ray players perform flawlessly with 100GB triple layer discs also.

That being said. Back on 2-10-2021 I posted a detailed post in regards to the Game of Thrones series that was released on the 4K Blu-ray format. Back in February I did encounter two defective 100GB discs in the Game of Thrones boxset that was verified on 3 separate 4K Blu-ray players. Something happen with the stamping process with my boxset that was fixed as soon as the two discs were exchanged. Its my understanding the region free Game of Thrones 4K Blu-ray discs are exactly the same worldwide. This was the first time every that I had two defective 4K Blu-ray discs that needed to be exchanged.

I go into much more details in the following link

If I buy an 820 from Best Buy would it be worth it to get the 2 year protection?

Well, I have used my 820 and 9000 for about 3 years with no problem. But of course YMMV.

I’m testing out discs on this thing and man is it a world of difference from the Xbox One X I was using. I’m super impressed with the upscaling along of DVDs on this thing.

Not too bad of a price. I lucked out one time to have been in Best Buy which they had an open box of the 9000, was able to get for about $550.
