The manual for your soundbar makes no mention of being DTS capable whatsoever and as most HD Blu-rays have DTS-HD audio (as do some UHDs, albeit as DTS:X) then that's why they're silent. The eARC function on the TV will make literally no difference to this situation, even if it passes through DTS your soundbar still can't play it. Page 14 of the manual says "The unit may not be able to decode all digital audio formats from the input source. In this case, the unit will mute. This is NOT a defect".

As mentioned, go into the audio setting of the Panasonic player where you can set individual audio types to output as bitstream or PCM. Change the DTS one from bitstream to PCM and see what happens.

My UB9000 likes saying Goodbye. How do I fix this? If I open the drawer I can place a disc in it. But then I cannot close the drawer without turning the player back on. Then it will say Goodbye again a few times. Luckily, eventually, the disc will play. So far.

I should have bought two of these machines when I had the chance. The machines with the older DAC.

I had this happened to my client once. A factory restore fixed the problem.

I have both the old and the new versions of 9000, while there is a slight difference between the two DACs, I have no preference between the two.

Maybe I'll get a new version just to compare but the specs aren't as good on the new DAC.

I'll check into the factory restore.

Unless you’re using analog audio outputs on the player the DAC differences don’t matter.

Uhmmm, I just said that the difference doesn’t matter regardless… and I use the analog out.

Not really. The S/N ratio on the new one is better than the old one. But that’s only on paper.

I'm pretty sure the new DAC does not handle 352.8kHz · 24bit. I know the old one does.

The Goodbye problem was solved by updating to 1.69 firmware. It had 1.60 before.

Oh I see. I only tested both players on the CD playback alone.

I don’t find the de-interlacing is bad. I find the upscaling to be mediocre, nothings special.

It's also possible to encode a progressive 29.97 FPS video onto a DVD using the "zigzag" scan technique which most MPEG2 encoder software will apply for you when encoding from a 29.97p source. This frame rate is more common on home movie DVDs than it is for studio releases.
Actually, ALL movies are encoded 24 fps on DVDs (at least in NTSC world), with pulldown flags for 60i. Flags are often wrong esp. on older movies but a good player such as OPPO usually can figure out how to deinterlace them properly. Panny is not a good player unfortunately.

So what is the best up-scaling DVD player ever? I have the Oppo DV-981HD player which I notice may be slightly better then the 9000. De-interlacing is definitely better.

DV-983 is better than the DV-981. BDP-83 is at least as good as the DV-983, possibly ever so slightly better, but both have some different features to consider.

The BDP-93/95 and BDP-103/105 are more or less the same for SD DVD playback (as each other). These models are very good with SD material but whether they are better than the DV-983/BDP-83—I could never find conclusive info. I’ve heard the earlier models (DV-983/BDP-83) are slightly better for SD DVD, but I’ve read at least once that the newer Marvell Kyoto-G2 chips in the BDP-93/95/103/105 were better for PAL playback (PAL to NTSC conversion??).

All of the above is second hand mostly from this and various other internet forums.

The main point of knowledge is that the DV-983 & BDP-83 use the Anchor Bay ABT2010 video chip while the BDP-93/95/103/105 use the Marvell Kyoto-G2 Qdeo chips.

I don’t think you can go wrong with any of the above Oppos.

103/105 don't have Qdeo. In general, all OPPOs are great. Toshiba XA2 is great. Higher strata Sony BD players are quite good (like s790, s6200, s7200 and later ones). But Sony 4K players not so much.

Oh, I could definitely be mistaken but that’s what I had read. I personally use a BDP-83. If you need region free and PAL to NTSC conversion then Oppo seems like the easy choice.
