Yep. When the TV can still kick out almost 2000 nits peak and I watch in a darkened room anyway then the reduction in APL isn't an issue, which Tyler Pruitt of Spectracal touched upon at some recent event or other. For the record I use my 4000-nit calibration for most content, but if something's been mastered out to 1000 nits then I'll try the other curve as I know it won't be clipping anything.

I also watch (and game) as much as possible in a darkended room, sometimes with some bias light but a lot of the time in the complete dark too.

I take it contrast setting is the most influential setting for HDR brightness here, but perhaps gamma setting also (apart from backlight obviously)?

I use contrast at 83 myself for all HDR content (Cinema Pro with gamma at default zero). Would that be your contrast setting for your 4000 nits calibration setting also at the moment? I seem to remember you had contrast at 85 and gamma at -1? IMO contrast at 83 is already bright enough as it is and everything looks quite lovely but I wonder if I could do better with some other setting?

Sorry I posted a screen shot after pressing the "STATUS" button before learning all of the features of this new player. The pic below displays on the screen when you press the "PLAYBACK INFO" button on the UB820 remote.

As I use the UB820 the more I learn. Here's a new menu button I just discovered that may make the tone mapping to match various displays and or projectors instead of using the more detailed adjustments I referenced earlier.

The UB820 has a lot of features to explore that can be best matched to every display and users likes.

^ It'd still be nice to actually know what nit levels those settings aim for, no?

My 4000 nit setting is Cinema Home, Contrast 85 and Gamma 0. The 1500 nit setting is Cinema Pro, Contrast 86 and Gamma 0.

Robert,

Can you also see if it's possible to save multiple tone maps? This might just be like saving multiple picture settings...I think the UB900 did that, but cannot recall for sure.

No big deal, but Lozin, a well respected Canadian member of AVS Forum took one of my photos that I exclusively posted on Blu-ray.com and reposted it on AVSForum without referenceing Blu-ray.com or my company.

I like and even encourage cross posting, but never without crediting the source. Hopefully Lozin will come back and read this and edit his post to credit us properly and hopefully join Blu-ray.com.

OK, so no HDR10+ on Sony TV, right? No biggie.
And DV should be on Sony TV via FW soon?.....

Unfortunately sometimes some posters on Blu-ray.com take pictures from the AVS forum and post it here without giving credit to the AVS poster.

I am glad I stumbled upon this thread.....but wish it wasn't due to the post on AVS.

It is exciting to see the first unit being tested out. I am anxious to see how this will do with projectors.

Robert - Do you have any plans to try this out on a projector?

Thanks COACH!

Yes, I've tested it on our store demo theater that has Sony's VW5000ES with a 13 channel Dolby Atmos audio system and on my personal home theater with Sony's Z1000ES all with exceptional results.

I also have Epson 5040UB and Sony's HW65ES, but don't have a theater to set them up in. I ran out of theaters )-:

Blu-ray too had some good advocates for the Blu-ray format (superior performance both in storage capacity and bandwidth), who, at the same time took personal interest in the plight of others (like me during surgery, I’ve redacted my email addy to protect my anonymity), e.g. this momentary thoughtfulness from a past President of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment -

and, on a far grandeur scale, still does good for all mankind through service and charity (current Chairman) - https://www.lafoodbank.org/learn/board/

Whatever happened to Amir?

The last post I recall of his was on AVS around 2015 if I recall where he didn't think UHD BD was going to happen.
