Mine is a duplicate remote (UB9000). Got it for just £7 on eBay.

Something like this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/392651073198

I had one earlier which I was using for nearly 2 years but it died all of a sudden.

I think I had to wait a longer period of time for it to turn on, but I usually press the power button so it turns off and I can turn it on again to work. Other times I put a disc in and then the video signal just goes away, prompting me to restart the player again for it to work. Some minor inconveniences aside, once it turns on and plays a disc correctly (and I keep changing my AVR to the Audio HDMI Output on the player until the disc plays) it's smooth sailing, but I actually haven't used the player that much to watch entire films. Just been testing things out and encountering these things. I just don't remember having issues like this so soon from other home video devices after buying them. I still have some VCR machines that work perfectly lol.
You need to return that one if you can. I don’t have any of those problems with my 820.

Thanks for the tip.

Quick question: does the "HDR setting" button bring up the Optimiser menu?

Think its either HDR setting button or picture quality button left to it that pops up the optimiser menu (HDR10 only).

So I purchased the UB820 a few months back and have encountered no issues with it, save one…. Sometimes when I power ON the player, it says “Please wait…” then “Goodbye” and turns off. However, the player was off prior to me hitting the power button. It’s almost like it resets as soon as I turn it on.

Anyone else encounter this? It doesn’t happen every time, but enough for me to question it.

1 have you updated the firmware?
2. Have you reset the player to factory after the firmware update
3. Have you set up your 820 properly?

I have this issue on a player I've had for five or six weeks - the open/close and on/off button on the top-right of the unit don't always work. They sometimes do work. It appears to be random.

I have both the 820 and 9000 and almost every issue I've had on either unit is typically 4K disc related. Any pixelization, freezing or initial messages about copyright have all been solved by simply cleaning the disc. I use screen clean spray with a microfiber cloth (not in a circle). I've had the 820 for about 2 years and the 9000 for about 7 months now - both with firmware upgrades and both using 48g HDMI cables, not the older 18g. I never have any other issues and I do use the 60 sec' skip ahead and/or 10 sec' back buttons on the 9000 remote a lot more than I thought I would. This feature also works on the 820 with this 9000 remote.

If you give it a second or two and try again it should work.

That doesn't work for me.

Further to the advice given above, my firmware was already up-to-date but I reset the player to factory settings so we'll see if that works.

The open/close is annoying on my 820 as well. You would think we wouldn't have to deal with that on an expensive player.

My UB450 suffers from the open/close issue randomly too. Both with the remote and the button on the box.

I see that happen quite often. I think it can depend on how you power off. I power off and switch the wall outlet off and it's not uncommon to power on twice when I do that.

I have read mixed results in how the Panasonics plays (or upconverts) dvds (most important since I have tons of them ) and blurays , I have read that Oppo and Sony do the best job at playing back old dvds and blurays . Can anyone here give an opinion . I'm in the market for a back up player or main player in the entertainment room .

Well the Oppo is out of the equation unless you want to pay an arm, leg and foot for one on ebay. The Panasonic UB9000 is the closest to the A/V and built quality of the Oppo. All Blu-ray players are going to have their pros and cons. There is no perfect Blu-ray player because after the normal wear and tear, something will probably go wrong with ot and then you'll have to get it repaired. Whichever blu-ray player you've decide to get, I highly recommend to buy an Extended Warranty because it will come in handy someday when the 1-year manufacturer's warranty expires, and you'll have a piece of mind.

SofaMan's player sounds broken also even if no one spilled beer on it.
Mine is located beneath my display (it is in a cabinet which is why I can't have anything larger than a 55".)

Cheapest combo is an Oppo for Blu-ray and DVD and a Panasonic 420 or 820 for UHD BD.

Well Oppo is out of the question now . The Sony's do a better job for dvds then Panasonic , But for UHD I may have to get the UB820 . Is there anything new coming out this year ?

Nope.

The non-UHD Oppos go for fair prices on the used market.
