Kris Deering talked a little about this at AVS. He had conversations with Stacey Spears and said there were issues with doing that.

Try and find a PC or phone repair shop, they should be experts at soldering. The solder points are pretty big on the 820.

I saw a region-free UB820 on eBay (sold by TPS) but since it's in the UK, it ended up being twice the price (with shipping and taxes) so I gave up on that option.

Thanks!
It's not really a big problem. You just have to look into your spam folder and check if the verification has landed there. Was so with me and they canceled the request. Had to fill it out again. The response was pretty swift and the process not that big of a deal.
I gladly gave 40,-€
I don't know if my firmware would work for you, as they request the MAC address of the device.
If somebody knows, that it's not a problem to use the one i got, i could send you the link via pm.

I don't mind paying the 40 euros. It's just they seem to randomly reject requests. I'm also wondering if using the modified firmware voids the warranty or not.

I guess the firmware is tied to your MAC address but not sure. Can you PM me please? I can always take a look at the files maybe.

The software is tied to the MAC-Address, thus it is very unlikely that the firmware of another user will work on your player.

Try to get it! It is much easier than it looks. If it fails you can always go the rattlebyte route.

Yeah, I might just use their form and see if it goes through. Like I said, I don't mind paying at all, I was just curious how the modified firmware is actually made.

Thanks anyway!

Question

@PlusPoint, wait, are you the guy running regionfreedom? If so, why do you have to be like that?

(sorry mods, we're super OT here)

Hey, has anyone had any regular BR freeze on the UB820?

I watched "Aliens" on BR this morning (the disc from the Anthology) and it completely froze at the 2 hour-mark. Disc is absolutely pristine. I put in my Sony X700 and it worked perfectly fine. My UB820 is only a few days old and firmware is up to date.

What gives? Isn't there one UHD disc player that works flawlessly?

Change your video output settings to 4K and turn HDR (and DV if your TV supports it) on.

Yes. Several discs won't play on it, and play fine on the Series X. Some people say this doesn't happen to them, so maybe worth trying an exchange if yours is still new enough.

Have you tried unplugging the player for about 5-10 minutes and then plugging it back in?? I had a faulty surge protector that made the player not able to read any disc I put in the player. What fixed the problem was unplugging the unit and plugging it back in. Eventually to truly fix the problem, I got a new surge protector. Haven't had an issue since.

My 820 is connected to an outlet using a regular power strip. I leave it unplugged all the time and just plug it in when I'm using it.

Maybe it's too sensitive and I'm not 100% sure it's completely leveled? Seems weird though for such a relatively expensive player.
