I usually watch DVDs on my 32” 720p Toshiba.

I think it's 20 min's but agree it's a hassle, if you hit the status button twice you get a time display

*I've read through and searched as much as I can in this thread so please forgive me if what I'm asking is repeating what's already been answered.*

What's the general consensus about which player is better? UB820 or UB9000?
The 9000 seems to be twice the price of the 820, is it really worth it?

Which player is better for playing DVDs? I've various tv shows that'll never get upgraded to HD and would still like to enjoy them but all upscaling so far has been a mess.

My current TV (LG75UM7000PLA) doesn't support Dolby Vision, will it still be okay playing from these players?

Thanks for any help!

Thanks, never knew it was there.

On another note, just discovered no zoom option for non-anamorphic DVDs (was going to check out True Lies). But there are only a couple of those I care about so no biggie.

I have the UB9000 and Ub820. The 9000 is only worth it if you want a premium build quality. It does have an additional mode or two for display types in the HDR Optimizer. If you don’t desire those things then save the cash.

It also has a better analog audio section including stereo balanced outputs if you use those.

The ub9000 is also quieter - might matter to some people. It also has a better remote, but that can be bought separately if desired.

Yeah. I don’t use them myself but if one wants XLR stereo outputs it might make a difference.

It doesn't. The Panny 9000 is terrible at DVDs.

I don't know what that could be. I have all three Oppo players hooked up. Same player settings, same custom picture mode on display as the 9000. I've read about the jaggies on the Panny but I'm not getting them. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the Z8H is also doing some of the upscaling, since the player can only upscale to 4K.

Excellent choice! I really hope we get Bad Day at Black Rock on 4K at some point. Would be awesome to see it get licensed over to Criterion as they do have it in their collection. Now sure how that would work now given Warner Archive has distribution rights.

27" S-Video capable CRT with a Late generation s-Video DVD player like the Toshiba SD-2800. Seriously, nothing else comes remotely close. You want the best, there it is.

I agree. OPPO also does 25fps which helped me out playing my German PAL discs. Not many players in the US have that functionality.

I see more of these issues coming from PAL regions. I think a lot of it is due to incorrect flags on the disc. Many discs were incorrectly flagged and the better players would read and interpret the cadence of the frames. So I think it’s a combination of PAL DVDs and incorrect flagging. There’s a small subset that are very vocal about this DVD playback issue. Unless you have a large DVD collection that you plan to use with this player it’s a nonissue. If you primarily have a Blu and 4K Blu collection it will not be an issue.

Still the best high end player currently being manufactured for 4K discs.

LOL! Watching on a 27-in screen seems so antiquated. But with that said as I was early to the projection game DVDs looked like crap once you were blowing them up past 50-60-inches. I was projecting them at 92 inches in 2005. Within 3 years I had sold most of my collection and went to Blu at 100 inches.

Today projecting 4K at 120 inches thinking of going to 135 inches. Can’t even fathom trying to watch DVD at that size.

I do wholeheartedly agree for formats to look their best one is a lot better off to seek out equipment it was designed to be played on. DVD was designed to be played back on analog CRT displays and for playback one is better off to seek out the better players from that generation of CE products.

I use the PS5 for DVDs. I've had the 820 for about 2 weeks now and no issues. HDR10 and DV 4Ks and regular BDs have all looked and sounded great.
