Yup, Oppo 203 is a shitty player? Give me a solution better than CRT for DVD. Player and Tv...but keep in mind I've tried nearly every high end player, on a top rated LCD TV and PVM.

Please don't dance around the question. Either give me an answer, Or move on.

Is the panasonic ub820 still one of the best 4k players under $500 ? I was thinking of getting one and this will be my first 4k player.

At normal viewing distances a competently encoded DVD, especially one that's been sourced from a strong HD master, will look more than solid when upscaled on a native HD display. Certainly better than it would on any CRTV.

As a matter of fact many, if not the majority of DVDs produced after around the mid 2000s were created with the concept of upscaling in mind. The home video heads at the major studios knew that more and more people would be investing in higher resolution displays in the coming years and (mostly) did their best to make sure that their output wouldn't look like total poop when the moment arrived. I still remember watching my copy of the POTC Dead Man's Chest DVD on my friend's 42" plasma and thinking it was the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen lol

Now early, especially non-anamorphic, DVDs? Oof, I'll give you those. CRT all the way. But don't even @me re: the DVDs of E.T. or the original Star Wars trilogy- they still look darn good even when projected.

S-Video still sucked for DVDs....

The real deal was SCART RGB (that didn't exist in America) or Component...

It's a solid player but if you can hold out until BF...the player usually drops to around the $400 mark.

Holding out for another B&H deal. $319 shipped is too good to pass up for that price.

Well, the wholesale cost have gone up by a lot so I don’t think that price will ever be available anymore.

How often does this price come up and when was the last time? I'd even wait if it was $350 but agree that pricing has come up overall so if $319 was something that happened last year, it may not happen again.

The sale was only a few weeks ago but once it made it to Slickdeals it was gone. $350 would be a solid drop.

There would be transcoding for converting the DVD colour space (which is in YCbCr) to RGB for SCART.
It's much purer presenting DVDs via. Component YPbPr, as it is purer to present Sega Mega Drive, Super Famicom, and PlayStation 1 games in RGB than transcoded to YPbPr.

It's also harder to find sets that support RGB SCART in 480p than ones that support YPbPr in 480p.
Still, transcoding is quite useful for people who don't have PVMs with support for both formats.
My trusty old Component tube TV looks great for DVDs, and I assume Sega Mega Drive games will still look great there even if it's not as technically pure as RGB SCART.

Clean it a second time and buff it in straight lines with a microfiber cloth. That worked on one of mine that didn't clear up with an initial cleaning.

Hello Dave,

thank you for your prompt reply i did try it on another player bought it as a backup X800m2 same exact problem as my UB820.But to my surprise it is working on my 1st generation 4k player UB900.yes i did clean it for the second and third time no success. what i noticed this disc is triple layer from early production 2016 no bar code on the disc itself ,in conclusion i guess it is a quality issue how the discs are pressed. the movie in question:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Suici...lu-ray/161534/

I did have another multiple discs have some hiccups through cleaning with a fibre cloth manage to watch them again till the end.

I think DVD’s look pretty spectacular on the UB9000. With minor jaggies visible mostly in the credits text. At least better than on any other player I’ve tried recently.

Anybody discover a way to have any of these panasonic players play video files continuously when there are multiple videos in a DLNA folder?

Thanks

Those jaggies are a direct result of the piss poor SD deinterlacing performance from the Panny. Literally any Sony player will do a better job when it comes to that. Heck, even my Philips DVP5990 (from 2008) is leaps and bounds above the the 820/9000 when it comes to DVD upscaling.

PS What happened to your signature? I thought the Xbox and PS5 were the "the best 4K players ever made" due to their "superior build and processing power"?

DVD's look like sh*t on my UB9000. My former Oppo was phenomenal for playback of that format.

I only use the 820 for 4K and BD discs. I use the PS5 or Sony x800M2 for DVD playback.
