I just don't want to find any flaws that will cause blu-ray.com members to tell to me to upgrade again later. In a few years, you guys might trash the TV and tell me to run out and get a new TV again.

Anyways, as you saw already, I already started a thread elsewhere and I'll take up the discussion there. Sorry for hogging this thread and turning it into a TV discussion.

Carry on discussing the Panny UB820/UB9000 player.

It's nowhere near as much of a problem these days compared to the early years, but if you're worried about burn in aim to get one of the evo panels + heat sink combos (basically the more expensive and more recent OLED tv's), and make sure to calibrate your SDR settings to the target 100 nits (out of box default settings are set for much much higher) to alleviate any fears of potential burn in (on recent Sony TV's that usually begins by turning the "OLED light" setting to "off" and sometimes reducing the brightness setting a bit too but will depend on the model and to some extent the unit).

In principle SDR with elevated settings renders the panel far more vulnerable to burn in than HDR content. The reason being that SDR is intended for a target 100 nits but the content actually displays based on your TV setting preferences, so if you have default and or very high brightness settings things like news channel displays, logos, video game HUD's etc would be much brighter than intended which in turn would age the panel faster. Some users watch TV in brightly lit rooms with more day time content and they might prefer a brighter picture. For those users OLED is not optimal. OLED is optimal for people who mainly watch content in semi dark rooms, or at night.

OLED material is finite but it is heat that mainly ages the panels. Combination of calibrated settings (both for SDR and HDR) with the new panel which already consumes less power, added to that a heat sink, immeasurably extends the life of the panel.

I've always sworn by LCD for its versatility, and loved Plasma for night time 1080p TV viewing, but to me once I switched to OLED I never looked back. The new generation of OLED displays are just the best.

They already added the external subtitles functionality in the RattleByte firmware!!! The functionality is already listed on the page: https://www.rattlebyte.com/Shop.php?...l&model_id=252

I have received 2 emails this week notifying that they have already added the functionality of external subtitles (the last email is from today):

Dear Nacho,
I am happy to confirm that the external subtitle support is coming to our modification soon, likely during the month of October. I will let you know once it becomes available.

Best regards,

Dear Nacho,
This is to let you know that the work on external subtitle support has been completed and this feature is now available as a part of our modification, both for new and existing users alike. Those who already have the modkit installed need to re-download the custom firmware from their account at rattlebyte.com and install it from a USB stick.
Note: I haven't installed or tested the new firmware yet, I was just notified today that the new functionality is already added. Currently, due to economic issues, I will not be able to buy the firmware, but I plan to buy it soon. Likewise, if someone buys it, could you please let me know if the functional works correctly (I understand that external subtitles work the same way as with the other enhanced firmwares).

I think it’s very odd that some type of screensaver option is not available on these players, even the cheapest dvd players have always had one. It would be nice if they could update these players one day and add this option but I know that’s very doubtful.
With LG OLEDs you can press the voice control button on the remote and say screen off. I wouldn’t worry about it since OLED burn in is due to cumulative pixel degradation. So unless you watch 100s of hours of the same film and/or pause on the same location it shouldn’t be an issue.

?buy the firmware? Did you mod your own UB820/9000 or you bought a modded one with the Rattlebyte kit?

I understand that the firmware is accessed by buying, through its page and it costs 50 euros. Correct me if I'm wrong.

It's a hardware mod together with the modified firmware. If you already bought the mod there is no need to pay again.

Tempted to get the mod, especially if my 820 has the connector on the board, it would only need two solder points and they're quite big on that model.

Although it looks like a faff to remove the front panel when compared to some player which are simple to get to the motherboard.

Well you could pay a professional modder who could use rattlebyte kit.

I like that feature on the Sony oled. I've moved the screen off function to the prime slot on settings bar too so it's not that difficult to get to. Would be even better if it had a dedicated button or hidden shortcut via a longpress on the remote though.

Hard to find locally, I emailed one to finish off my Sony mod and they never got back to me. Annoying as they're literally a few hundred yards away! I don't mind soldering, but I wouldn't want to brick my 820.

Me too. I set it so that I can reach it with two presses.

Do they each perform at the same level?
Vast majority of users are not using the analog audio so yes the DACs are pretty meaningless. The whole Panasonic line use the same video engine. If money is an issue between the 820/9000 then the 820 is the way to go. The difference is in the build quality. The 820 is the best sub $500 player.

Thank you. Really the choice is between getting the 820 or just sticking with my panny 420 (I don’t have DV capability anyway). Just stick with my 420?

Question, I see the Samsung QN90B is rated for 1700-2000 nits according to Rtings & Classy Tech so would you set the UB820 to super high luminance? or leave it at mid?

I think super high is around 1,500 nits, but it's something you can experiment with.
