As for framerate matching, will Netflix play native content in 24fps or is it locked at 60fps?

I apologize if this has been answered already, but I've heard mixed reports.

thanks
It was reported earlier it's lock at 60fps and Netflix has no plans to change that.

@evan201
thanks for your reply
As a baseline I was asking if Epson owners were using the Digital Cinema colour space for UHD HDR ?
I have been following your posts here and on AVS
also working through some posts by Kris Deering
I must say I am confused with some suggestions
when SDR2020 is mentioned is this a setting on the Epson or the 820?
unfortunately I dont have R. Masciola patterns

Buy the R. Masciola patterns! They are worth it. He has greatly improved the patterns to perfection since release. On top of that it's cheap! Support this great developer! It's a setting on the 820.

Don’t remember if I pointed that out but: 4k/24p content over usb or local network is displayed in 24p, but not 1080/24. They’re converted in 60p... Couldn’t find a way to turn that off (tried to set the display in 1080p, turned the 24p Automatic «*off*»...)
Plus, using Plex, any network content had a framing error: white lines are visible on the top and left sides of the frame (sometimes it’s the otber sides).

And finally, I only have 2 4k/Hdr mkvs, but for the two of them, the player couldn’t play the sound (error message)....

@panasonicst60
Thanks for the info I will look into getting R Masciola patterns

I was watching Planet Earth 2 (the second disc) last night using settings provided by Harpervision

I tried experimenting by turning on the optimiser and going negative with the dynamic range slider

It was a complete disaster
the image started to breakup badly and loud cracks were coming from my speakers causing me some concern

Turned off the optimiser and it eventually stopped
I tried this a couple of times with the same result

Which test pattern product is the one we should use? They're are several different ones on the site.

This is one unfortunate caveat of this player, the network media player is all but useless without bitstreaming capabilities. low cost media players (Zidoo X9s) can do it and other competing UHD players that cost less. I was hoping this would have changed for the updated models.

Robert, hi if you have a voice back to Panasonic, please ask them to update the media player, thx!

Depends on what you need to calibrate. He has the hrd10 and/or the HLG. You have the option of either the USB or disc which is personal preference. I find the USB very useful in most applications.

He will also be releasing a Dolby Vision version late this year.

The Pannys are so bad as media players. Don't get me wrong, I'm someone who's never used an "app" on a player in his life so I do like disc spinners that just spin discs, but having playback support for a variety of video files and formats has become increasingly useful over the last few years (especially when I recently upgraded my internet speed, heh) and the Pannys are woefully inadequate. They should have that warning as a sticker on the box.

He's doing a Dobly version?! Nice!

(I chose the USB option as you get constant updates rather than being stuck with whatever revision is committed to disc, and if you have decent file playback then having it on disc is a moot point. What? Oh.)

Messing with the white and black tone curve is fun.

For 1000 Nit discs on my Epson 5040 trying out
HDR Op. ON.
Dynamic Range Adjustment +6
Brightness 0
White +4
Black -4

Independence Day UHD looks awesome.

Hello all,

Quick question - is there an update on when/if this player is expected to get an update to play DV for Sony's low latency TV's?

Thanks!

Those controls are a game changer for me. The previous ub900 dynamic range control was good, but this takes it to a new level. Now I can raise the average brightness with the dynamic range control to 4 or 5 and correct the wash out by lowering the black tone control to -3 or -4. I can then minimize white house clipping by adjusting the white tone control +2 or +4.

For the first time I am finding most uhd discs to look better than the blu ray version on my sdr projector.

Outstanding!

IMO, there is no single best, currently it is a smorgasbord of devices. An AVS member has put together a spreadsheet of devices and their features here. This based on his own research, I helped with correcting a couple of errors with one player because I had the manual and he did not.

None of the above, as none of these companies can compete with Apple, and to a lesser extent, Amazon, Google and Roku, on the streaming side. So, in my book, it really comes down to which of the players can balance optimal disc media playback with ease of use and price.

And as we have learned, nobody stepped up to the plate and made it happen on the physical media side, i.e., HDR10/+ and DV capability, media processing optimization to reflect wide spectrum of TV and projector capabilities, a 4K UI to match streaming players, and priced below $200.

So, there is no disc media player vs. a $175 AppleTV 4K vs. $70 Chromecast Ultra vs. $40 Amazon FireStick debate, because none of the disc media players can stick, or want to be, in the streaming game.

It's a shame that this question even needs to be asked in August of 2018. So sad for Sony.

Apple is going to launch tvOS 12 this fall with Atmos and improved single sign-on capability. It's taken a while due to everyone's nervousness about Apple dominating movies as they've done for music, but it's happening. Nothing is going to able to deliver the platform Apple is building with the tvOS and their own silicon for streaming. Amazon can keep their devices cheap, Google can prevent others from delivering YouTube in it's best expression, but all of this stuff won't matter.

When the question comes, which device is optimal for Netflix, DisneyFlix, Hulu/WarnerMediaFlix, and last but not least, Apple Music/Flix, it will be an Apple device.

When the question comes which device is optimal for disc media playback, hold on tight is the best advice I can give you.

Personally, I'd like to give my money to Panny, but I'm going to wait on the DV update, and see if Sony can step up on the UI/processing/stabilty side.

Not for me because it will not have Amazon video. As of now my Sony UBP-X800 fills my streaming and media player needs. Use UHD BD and BD (with Dolby Atmos or DTS:X) on a Oppo 203 for quality playback.

IMHO, unless Panny makes a lot of changes the 820 will not be much use as a IP device. Time will tell.
