Saw the MLA OLED G3 review by Vincent Teoh. Its maxingout at 1400 nits. Using the super LED setting of 1500 nits on the UB820 and then watching a 4000 nit movie will be amazing

You might want to try just outputting the HDR signal w/o the HDR optimizer to see how well the TV’s tone mapping handle higher than rated nit content. Basically using the HDR optimizer is double tone mapping. I’m guessing that TV manufacturers have gotten better at tone mapping since the Panasonic players were released. It’s a nice feature to have available but I wouldn’t necessarily use it all the time now on a newer set.

It doesn't make a difference on my LG 55OLEDBX when I set it at 1000nits but it does make a difference on the Samsung 50qn94a(max nits 1600 nits) when I set the optimiser at 1500 nits for content of 4000 nits and above. Into the Spiderverse is like 9000 nits in a 4000 nit window. When I use the 1500 nit Optimiser setting, it does the job and make it look nice but then the blacks on the movie are not inky black.

In short, HDR optimiser is relevant for a Samsung TV as they do some wierd thing.

Looking at some other models, it could also be small slider inside a tiny slot which should be pushed in one direction.
Unfortunately, I now have to perform this operation about twice a month. The UB820, while it has a quality image, has been the worst trouble I've ever experienced, build quality wise.

Then there's the pixelation and freezing on 4K discs that work fine on other players to contend with.

Anyone managed to play DVD audio and BD audio discs on the UB820? I know it doesn't play SACDs but interested in these audio formats.

"BD audio" is not a new format. It's 100% standard Blu-ray. DVD Audio, where audio is authored to AUDIO_TS subfolder, requires HW support.

So, I just got my DP-UB9000 and are trying to get the volume to work with my TV - no go. The old remote works fine, but the new one just won't program to the tv. Any hints?

Erm...didn't Pannysonic remove that feature from the European versions of that remote?

Oh? Makes sense, as the one I had before was bought from eBay. Will get a replacement then and try.

No DVD-Audio support from this player (820 & 9000).
BD Audio no problemo.

I notice my old 9000 remote (that works with TV codes) does not have a HDR button.

Is it possible to access this HDR function any other way than the physical button?

That way I would not have to buy another remote (again).

I'm planning to upgrade to a 4K TV in the next 1-2 years, as circumstances permit, especially as I want to do it right and get a great OLED or similar. So I've been researching to get up to speed on 4K.

These Panasonic players seem among the best 4K players available, if not the best. And so I'm a bit paranoid that the 820 won't be available when I finally upgrade my TV and that it won't have been succeeded by a newer equivalent, due to physical media's changing role.

Question for those more keyed into the trajectory for 4K hardware: am I worrying over nothing? Or would buying an 820 now and keeping it in a cupboard until I can upgrade my TV be wise?

I’d be buying what I could and storing it until needed. The player market is extremely limited now. OPPO and Pioneer no longer sell players.

The 820 must be coming up 5yrs old and the 9000 must be the same. The 9000 is a nice unit with an added extra over the 820 and has a metal chassis (if you like that sorta thing), I know I do.

I sold my 9000 to fund a 203 but will be picking up another one and probably an 820 unless something new is released.

I have a hard time justifying the price of a Revon due to it being an OPPO clone and their pricing is nutz considering all the heavy lifting with r&d was done for them.

It does seem like the HDR button is needed to actually change HDR presets.

I ordered two remotes, as I'm not 100% sure which one will be best;

N2QAYA000175 (US?)
N2QAYA000172 (UK/EU?)

All the presets are available if you use the slider, I think you just have to move two notches to the right to simulate each one (they trade contrast for brightness). The slider (if you go left) also offers a trade for brightness for more contrast.

The different remotes have slightly different layouts (and buttons).

Not sure if there's an equivalent for the US though if that's where you're based.

Which slider do you mean?

EDIT: Got it, the Dynamic Range Adjustment.

The HDR button steps are 0, +4, +8 and +11.

I still like the HDR button, so if one or both remotes work, all is well. :-)

I have an 820 and so far it's been great. Do you find the extra cost of the 9000 is worth it? Have you seen any noticeable differences (other than the chassis build), that justify the increased price?

I'm finally upgrading my player in the near future. I'm going with the 820 model.

No playback difference, but it’s super robust and whisper silent in operation.

Worth it? I don’t regret it, but others may think the differences are too subtle.
