You might want to try just outputting the HDR signal w/o the HDR optimizer to see how well the TV’s tone mapping handle higher than rated nit content. Basically using the HDR optimizer is double tone mapping. I’m guessing that TV manufacturers have gotten better at tone mapping since the Panasonic players were released. It’s a nice feature to have available but I wouldn’t necessarily use it all the time now on a newer set.

In short, HDR optimiser is relevant for a Samsung TV as they do some wierd thing. |

Then there's the pixelation and freezing on 4K discs that work fine on other players to contend with. |

I'm planning to upgrade to a 4K TV in the next 1-2 years, as circumstances permit, especially as I want to do it right and get a great OLED or similar. So I've been researching to get up to speed on 4K.
These Panasonic players seem among the best 4K players available, if not the best. And so I'm a bit paranoid that the 820 won't be available when I finally upgrade my TV and that it won't have been succeeded by a newer equivalent, due to physical media's changing role. Question for those more keyed into the trajectory for 4K hardware: am I worrying over nothing? Or would buying an 820 now and keeping it in a cupboard until I can upgrade my TV be wise? |

I’d be buying what I could and storing it until needed. The player market is extremely limited now. OPPO and Pioneer no longer sell players.
The 820 must be coming up 5yrs old and the 9000 must be the same. The 9000 is a nice unit with an added extra over the 820 and has a metal chassis (if you like that sorta thing), I know I do. I sold my 9000 to fund a 203 but will be picking up another one and probably an 820 unless something new is released. I have a hard time justifying the price of a Revon due to it being an OPPO clone and their pricing is nutz considering all the heavy lifting with r&d was done for them. |

EDIT: Got it, the Dynamic Range Adjustment. The HDR button steps are 0, +4, +8 and +11. I still like the HDR button, so if one or both remotes work, all is well. :-) Last edited by Muyfa666; 04-13-2023 at 03:26 PM. |

I have an 820 and so far it's been great. Do you find the extra cost of the 9000 is worth it? Have you seen any noticeable differences (other than the chassis build), that justify the increased price?

Worth it? I don’t regret it, but others may think the differences are too subtle. |
