No, not really. There are some small layout differences, and some buttons added/removed on the different releases, but none of them have any extra functions except for being able to program them to your TV.

was watching Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade last night on 4K disc on the 820. At one point the audio went out of sync, which a rewind fixed. And later there was digital noise randomly that was not repeatable when I skipped back and played again. Are these two things disc issues or should I be concerned for my player?

Definitely get the remote that fulfils the most important functions for you. I actually rarely use the -10s/+60s buttons. If it skipped back 60 seconds it might be more useful. All Panasonic BD remotes will work on the 820 for playback/menus but few have the HDR menu button

What I'd want for those skip buttons to be actually useful is a more powerful player. It just takes too long to skip back ten seconds.

The Subtitle button is where it's at, though.

I'm having similar video-only issues with my 8 month old UB820. I find it extremely sensitive to small scratches and disc blemishes that my old 2K player didn't notice on 2K discs. After buying several 4K UHD discs with perpendicular scratches on first open, I had similar stalling and digital fragmentation that I had to sit through 30 to 90 seconds of waiting for it to skip ahead to a playable section. I default to immediately returning for replacement any disc that comes new with scratches.

I am on the latest firmware update 1.69, which is about as far as I have gotten with Panasonic. I thought I'd check here to see if it was a common problem before proceeding with support. I guess I will see how far I get, tomorrow.

I'm dumb and went ahead and bought a 9000 with a region mod. After getting and testing it works, I have to decide if I want to keep the 820 as a backup or just sell it to recoup some of that money.

I do worry about player availability in the future but I don't want to just let it set and collect dust either when someone could use one. I'll probably sell it on here as long as I'm happy with the 9000.

Your not dumb for buying a UB9000 with a region mod. Good purchase and choice.

Keep the 820 as a backup player. Panasonic has made a ton of them one less player out there isn't going to make a difference. If you want to sell it though go for it.

As has been mentioned several times before, this is due to the technology itself. The UHD Blu-ray format is pushing the limits of what is possible with optical media. While you may also have been unfortunate in getting a less fortunate UB820 than others, the room for error is very small with these discs, so any small blemish is going to show up on screen.

According to Ghibli/Ponoc/IMAGICA/Panasonic people, they used a digital filter instead of printing out to 35mm. However, it is very much possible to do a film digitally but finish it to 35mm film, like what was done for Denis Villeneuve's Dune.
Do you have a source for this "finishing out to 35mm film"? I thought it was artificial grain and gate weave and not at all the Dune process.

I decided to reach out to Synapse and they couldn't have been nicer about it. They are sending me out a replacement disc. They didn't have to do that and I appreciate them going the extra mile. I love supporting companies like that.

yeah, and I get that. But this was a disc that I don't think I've ever even watched. It was new out of the package. I will take a look and maybe there is a smudge from the factory.

Discs can be bad from the factory, too. I've had that happen several times over the years with Blu-ray (out of thousands of discs).

The secret "Ponyo filter" created from the first Studio Ghibli movie released on blu-ray by Mr. Yoshikashi Kashiwagi.

Has anyone actually managed to get the UB820 to play FLAC and / or DSD files gapless?

I have had mine for almost a year and tried everything I can think of but have yet to see it play anything gapless.

I even called Panasonic support but the person I got I don't think even understood what I was talking about?

Carl.

On the 9000 it's the blue button for gapless iirc.

what is "iirc"?

Are you saying there is a special button I have to hit in order to get the unit to play music gapless over DLNA?

Carl

If I recall correctly. On the remote that comes with the ub9000 there are 4 coloured buttons and i think pressing the blue enabled gapless playback. As for DLNA i couldn't say.

Good for you. Synapse have good reputation in my book. :-)
