New firmware may be for the newer updated players only that have a different DAC due to the factory fire. Could be wrong but it might explain why they haven’t released it.

Are you suggesting that an 820 with factory 1.70 would have the different DAC you mentioned? Can you reference some info on that for me? Thanks for your input.

Yeah it seems to be random and semi rare. Did it with the TCL and the replacement. I finally got a Hisense U8H and it worked perfectly. Others had the same model and player and worked great. Im sure a firmware update could fix the problem but good luck getting Panasonic or Sony to admit fault and work on it, especially when it's such a rare problem.
But again.....your pop up menu does work. So yes I get that it's a pain but I least you can still make selections. My pop up menu was also blacked out so I couldn't even do that. |

But the units basically shared the same FW even though the 820 lacks that audio circuitry. Could be they had a running change at the factory and just are loading the new FW on all new models. Just a guess. It could just be a minor update to correct a bug that was found. Or it could also be due to different IC used in production that required a different set of FW instructions that does not apply to older players. As others have pointed out many hardware manufacturers are pretty vague with FW revision history lists. |

I was wondering if an aftermarket 9000 remote would be compatible for the 820. It would be nice to have a backlit feature even considering any redundancies.

It should. The Panasonic machines have three unique IR identifiers. Just make sure you default your IR set code to 1 if you changed it previously because the new remote will default to code 1.

Thanks guys for the remote info. I'll look into the code set. Not sure about the functioning of the subtitle button on the "original" . The option button on the 820 remote is so great for positioning & adjust of the brightness of the subtitles & I see the 9000 remote has that as well. I have some high frequency hearing loss so subs are important for me to understand dialogue clearly in many cases. Thanks again.

My original one had it on the back but the one I just got from value electronics just has the serial number on the back in the same place. The ship date from fedex that was on the box when they got it was Jan 2023. |

The weak link in my system was running the video through my audio processor.
Having the dual HDMI outputs of the UB9000 is something I would want to live without. HDMI video in particular seems so fragile a direct connection from source to display device is something worth trying. Had to check but I'm happy the 820 also has this feature. |

Unfortunately, I have to bring my UB9000 in for repair, using my Geek Squad extended warranty. It plays all Blu-rays, DVDs, and BD-100 4K discs without issues. Unfortunately, it fails on about 25% - 33% of BD-66 4K disc. it pixelates and sometimes freezes but mainly it pixelates. It's happened with discs from Scream, Universal, and WB. The latter being the main offender. The same discs play perfectly fine in my Oppo 203.
It's such a strange problem that it only happens with Bd-66 4K discs. Not a single failure on dozens of BD-100 discs. Best Buy will not outright replace the player. They have to send it to their repair depot, which is a scary thought. If it fails again, back it goes to the repair depot and they can't replace it with a new one, unless the repair depot says it's 'junk'. Does anyone have any feedback about this player and Best Buy Geek Squad repairs? I am hoping someone can leave some feedback. Thanks in advance! |

I regret buying my UB9000 from BB because Crutchfield would have double boxed it for the same price. pls let us know how you do and how it goes with the BB repairs. I have a few experiences with the Geek Squad and other types of gear and it wouldn't be where I take it unless it was warranty. |

It's just so strange that it only has issues with like 25% of BD-66 discs but no issues with any other type of disc. |
