That’s not colourspace at all, that’s chroma upsampling

The original chroma is 4:4:4 but lossy compressed to 4:2:0. The option is to ask whether you want to send the data as is at 4:2:0 or upsampled to 4:2:2 or 4:4:4

Wouldn't really call it "lossy compression", they're just throwing away 75% of the chroma information

True. Nothing was compressed, just thrown out completely

Has anyone had similar experiences and taken it for service and seen an improvement? The thought of throwing money away to have them tell me there is nothing wrong with it really would be the cherry on top. I may just retire it to e-waste if I have to pay much to get it working reliably. The anxiousness I feel when I put a brand new movie into this player and just hoping it reads is really not feeling worth it anymore.
That's another reason why I think these devices should have more advanced playing capabilities. Gaming consoles have the interesting ability to play discs that dedicated players refuse to play. My Xbox One S even plays B-locked BDs

I'm starting to get fed up with my UB820 that I just got at the end of 2023.. Two weeks ago had gotten Shout!/Scream Factory's "Single White Female" and it would glitch up and freeze and you could fast-forward through it and it still happened despite multiple tries ejecting the disc, playing from a different point ect. Then again days ago it happened with Indicator's "Body Double" disc. Both discs have no marks on their surface. Never had an issue playing a 4K disc though.

Did you try playing on another device? I run in to the occasional error on a disk like that (which, oddly enough, is only on 2k Blus and not 4ks, like you said) and have the same symptoms: glitches and freezes in one location that can be skipped, but no amount of cleaning let it play that section. I then take it to another player, whether Xbox or my old craptacular Sony x700, and it does the same thing at the same spot.

Conclusion? It is a manufacturing error on the disk. If I just bought it, I'll get it replaced, but typically it's past any return time when I find it, as it's been mostly on a single disk within a set for a TV show. (which is why it took me a while to get to it) Regardless, it's not the player so far in my experience. YMMV.

Good to know I'm not alone here, but yes it's very odd that we've both encountered no issues with actual 4K discs, but your regular blu-rays give it an issue. I did try both discs on my secondary player, an LG UP870 4K player I got in 2019 and they played fine, no issues. I watched Shout! Factory's "Chopper" blu-ray on the Panasonic last night and encountered no issues though. It's kinda embarrassing when you've got company over, watching a disc and suddenly it freezes and you've got to switch players.

That's a real nightmare scenario right there.

But like I said I've only had my Panasonic UB820 for about 6 months now, without going to the start and combing through this entire thread, what's this "top menu" trick people are speaking of and can you do it on the model I have? My LG UP870 4K player I got from 220-Electronics is already region-free, but it'd be cool to know if my Panasonic can access region locked discs too.

Side note: I e-mailed Shout! about the issue I was having with the "Single White Female" disc on my Panasonic. After giving them the model and serial number of my player they actually shipped me out a new copy which I did not expect they would do, especially considering they have less than 10 copies left available on their site. Six left now to be exact.

Yeah, so again, I simply attribute any 2k Blu issues I've encountered to disk-related and not player. I suppose it could be the player on some, but to date I've found the same issue on those disks with other players.

The top menu trick is for region-locked disks. (mostly 2k Blu, as 4k should be region free) Many times you can hit the top menu button and it will bypass the lock and get you to the menu to play it just fine. It seems to work more for the North American players on disks from overseas, but it's an option to try if you import a disk from another region.

Just tried this and it actually worked. It's so simple I kind of can't believe it, haha.

Indeed. My imagination has the Panny boys sitting in a small room for a video call to show the player off. On the other end are multiple studios: suits in smoke-filled rooms, big stogies in clenched teeth, peering through squinted eyes at the new player. The boys say "we're making this 4k player, and 4k is region free, so can we just stop forcing the issue and let it play everything? The people will love it and buy more movies." The studios, shifting in their seats, switching clenched cigars from one side of their mouth to the other, and twirling their moustaches tell them "no! You have to implement that lock everywhere! Our control must not die! If you don't do it, we'll sue, you filthy animals!" The studios in tandem then flip the boys off and each of them end their call. The boys then shrug, hand the job to the nearest no-experience intern and say "as long as it looks good enough to not be sued, we won't care," who finishes it that afternoon, and the rest is history...

...yeah, I'm sure it's something like that.

I can't help but wonder how it works... Blu-ray's region locks are supposed to be hardware-based.

Has anyone ever had a Panny player remote completely die on them? I have tried all the troubleshooting tips and I have zero response. It just seems so weird.

Are they tho? if that's the case it shouldn't be possible to modify a player's region by simply editing the firmware. And of course on the disc side it's just a simple programmed region check that, depending on how it's implemented, can easily be bypassed.

Had an accident at home where unfortunately something in the drive tray broke on my UB9000. Tried doing some research, but replacement drives do not seem to be readily available. Anyone aware of places that do sell these (in Europe and ships to Norway) and are all the drives listed for the UB9000 above compatible with the Panasonic DP-UB9000EG1 (my version)? Would have thought drives were easier to get a hold of than it seems from my initial research

Edit: I believe my current drive is TXP0126.

Hello.
Looking at Vicent's analysis of the oppo 203 vs the Panasonic 9000, he shows that the oppo presents a much darker and less vivid Dolby Vision than the Panasonic. Is this still a problem for oppo after several updates?

I don't think there's anything wrong with DV with either player. If I recall correctly, the Panny and The Sony blow out the highlights in some scenes while the Oppo didn't. At the end of the day how good DV looks will depend much more on the TV rather than the player.
