Some old 2010 Panasonic Blu-ray players offer reverse 3:2 pulldown 24fps for DVD's. Are you sure the new Panasonics do not offer that DVD 24fps feature that is found on OPPO and Sony 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players along with standard 1080P Blu-ray players.

Does the UB820 really support Dolby Atmos in the netflix app? I see Dolby vision but for all shows that should have Atmos I see only 5.1. Also my Marantz SR7010, which always reports atmos when it's available, doesn't show it for sound coming from the netflix app on the UB820. I have the latest firmware 1.26. Thx! |

All, First post. I am in need of some basic help here. Please help this 4K HDR noob come into the 21st century as I just upgraded the entire theater from 1080P to 4K eShift. I have a JVC RS540, UB820, Denon 4400. I have zero experience with HDR content. I have the UB820 set to SDR2020 projector. Ready for the stupid questions? Here we go:
1. Do I need to go into the JVC's menu each time I play an HDR title and select all the HDR settings? When playing my first HDR movie last night, when I press the info button, the projector is in Natural mode, D6500, etc. When I attempted to switch the mode to HDR, the picture became dark and unwatchable. Natural, THX and all the other modes looked pretty good, but as soon as I switched to HDR, super dark and unwatchable. Info button on the UB820 shows SDR2020 outputting to the PJ. 2. Earlier in this thread Kris quotes settings on the UB820 as SDR2020 and adjusting the brightness slider to 5x the nit value. I have no way of measuring my nit value at this time. Also, I do not see where these numbers are located in my UB820. When I turn on tone mapping, everything is set to zero. Luminance, brightness, contrast, etc. The scales go negative or positive one number for each of the settings. Kris' UB820 seems to have numbers in the hundreds. I guess I am just flat out missing where this setting is in the UB820. In natural mode on the JVC, my shadow details were being crushed last night (Hereditary movie, UHD HDR) (not a very good movie BTW). The bright scenes seemed a bit overblown (washed out) as well. I know I can probably do some basic things to correct this, but again, I am not even in HDR mode on the RS540. I was in Natural as HDR killed the picture. Can someone offer me some caveman settings that may not be perfectly tuned to my specific RS540 and UB820, but that would get me in the ballpark? I would also really like to understand question one and what is required of me when I insert a DVD, Blu Ray, or 4K UHD Blu Ray into the UB820. What settings do I change in the RS540 and UB820 menus to get a reasonable picture. Thanks in advance and more questions to follow I am sure... Glad I found this forum BTW. Lots of good info here... I noticed some interesting things with the optimizer last night. As we know most titles are 1000 nits and the optimizer on off doesn't show any difference. Watched passengers and fantastic beats which I think is 4000 nits. Both those titles get darker with optimizer on. Honestly I preferred it off. I didn't feel like I was getting any more details in highlights just dimmer.
Now on blade runner 2049 at 10,000 the image gets brighter overall with the optimizer on and I prefer it that way This is doing sdr bt2020 to an older but 4k, non hdr jvc rs4910 |

You probably want to configure a User mode with Cinema or Natural picture mode, BT.2020 color profile, and gamma 2.4. This is not the thread to further discuss how to configure custom user modes in the JVC. |

Passengers is mastered to 4000 nits with MaxCLL value 1529. Fantastic Beasts is 4000 with MaxCLL value 3173. With Optimizer turned on it will use a 1529 nit based tone map for Passengers and a 3173 nit tone map for Fantastic Beasts. So I am not surprised that the picture will appear brighter with Optimizer turned off for these two titles. Blade Runner 2049 (USA version) at 10,000 nits has a MaxCLL value of only 181. So the Optimizer would use a 181 nit based tone map so you may see a brighter picture with Optimizer On than with the Optimizer turned off. |

Keeping this on topic, will the UB820 always output SDR2020 to the projector regardless of what media is being played? DVD, regular Blu-Ray, 4K UHD HDR Blu Ray? If not, do I need to change settings depending on the type of media inserted? Thanks again, Adam |

- UHD HDR10 disc playback - Amazon Video HDR content I cannot get SDR BT.2020 for Netflix HDR content. Perhaps others have but I can only get the 820 to output SDR REC709. You will get SDR REC709 for HD Blu-Ray and DVD. |

Some people watch a lot of 480i DVD's and want the 24fps reverse 3:2 pulldown feature for film based material when upscaling. This well be a deal breaker for some consumers (along with no SACD or DVD-Audio support). However maybe a future firmware update might offer the 24fps DVD feature. |

I can confirm that the Ub820 definitely supports Dolby Atmos in the Netflix app. I just played a bit of Lost in Space in 4k HDR10 on Netflix. I have a Denon AVR-S910W receiver and it shows Atmos on it's display. ![]() Last edited by dlbsyst; 09-10-2018 at 01:50 AM. |

Does it show as Atmos in the app itself? I still only see 5.1 |

Hi folks...
I'm trying to decide whether I should wait for the DP-UB9000 or just get the DP-UB820 now. I would love to see a spreadsheet showing all the differences, but all I've found so far is: 1) The DP-UB9000 has more analog ports in the back for audiophiles 2) The DP-UB9000 has better/stronger build quality and more noise-dampening That's all I've read about in their differences. I don't need #1, as I don't have a big place, just a small area near my couch I use for watching movies; just regular old bookshelf speakers for playback. #2 would be nice, as I'm trying to make my home theater system as quiet as possible. Does anyone know any more about the differences, or can point me to a chart that compares the two units? As it is, #2 would make it worth waiting for me. - Tim |

I am considering purchasing UB820, but in my country it isn't available yet. It is advertised a 'region free' but I wonder whether it can be redesignated to read all file formats...

Is anyone else having an issue playing Planet Earth II? The HDR goes off as soon as it starts and I have to manually turn it on.

UHD 4K discs are ALL region free, any player is still region locked for regular Blu-ray Discs. Have not read that anyone in this thread has found a Mod for region free after market for Panny player. There is a “work-around” using the remote for many Panasonic players. See Post 1044 in this thread. |
