I have always used a standalone streaming device. Most player apps are no where near as good as those on devices like a Roku or Apple TV.

I have an ATV. The 820 has a better hdr image, and that stand is not correct on many Blu-ray players. The Sony’s handle 24p and amazon and Netflix well. Panasonic needs to learn from them.

None of this excuses why they release the Amazon app when it doesn’t work properly. The Netflix app is the newest version and works great.

Yeah, that makes sense about the 820 producing better HDR with the streaming apps. I don’t have a 4K Netflix subscription, so HDR with Netflix wasn’t at the front of my mind.

It seems that most posts in this thread that talk about the results of the HDR optimizer are referring to the use of it with projectors, OLED TVs and low nit LCDs.

How big is the benefit of the HDR optimizer with TVs that are capable of 1000 nits or more?

If a display has got the kind of brightness levels that HDR's absolute luminance demands (though I'm not just talking about peak brightness but having the correct APL as well) then even if the mapping isn't stellar we won't usually run into the problems that low nits + poor mapping can create. Could it still finesse the HDR to the nth degree on such a TV? Yeah but I'm not sure anyone's been all that bothered to find out.

I would like to know this as well. I can't find it either.

Ordered this from BB for pickup. Wanted to get 9000 as it seems to have better built quality like 900, but it would take another year to come down to my price point.

Quick question for those who use dual HDMI outputs ... In the HDMI VIDEO field when you press PLAYBACK INFO. it gives detailed information about the video, but should HDMI AUDIO be blank (it gives the audio information and bitrate inputted but not outputted)?

Could someone snap a picture during BD playback?

It should have something in the HDMI Audio field like 'TrueHD' or 'DTS' but yes, the rest of it is blank because the audio information being outputted is the same as what's being inputted, so they don't bother to double up the information.

Example here, note the TrueHD logo on the right side of the HDMI Audio field. Left side is for video information, right side is for audio information. HDMI Video is outputting video but no audio, HDMI Audio is outputting audio but no video. Make sense?

Thanks Geoff D, yes, that makes sense. I appreciate you taking the time to snap a picture for me.

anyone knows if the UB820 will do somewhat acceptable HDR->SDR conversion so I can use on a 1080p projector (Rec709), I read there is a setting for either 709 or 2020 so it may work without too much messing around.

thanks

I think no. I tried couple of files to test my new soundbar, 820 doesn't output sound just the video. Read somewhere that Panny doesn't do losless tracks properly.

That's a bingo. Panasonic players DO NOT play lossless/high res DTS/Dolby audio on standalone files (regardless of container), only when played off of a disc.

Hooked up 820. Coming from 900, first thing that sticks out is remote. It felt like huge downgrade. Screeching noise its making when I open/close the disc tray is really bugging me. May be its just my player.
I came across this table. Doesn't 820 has the highlighted feature?

Anyways I am hoping 9000 will release before 30 day return period.
