The UB820 upscale actually looks good, but as HeavyHitter said it looks more processed, I had a test pattern up where I could see faint halos and it bothered me, letting the LG upscale the same pattern there are no halos, it looks a bit softer overall but I'd rather go for that. Of course if I actually dial up the sharpness on the LG I can produce the same effects (around 20 or so). I heard the high end Sony sets also sharpen the upscale so maybe it's just a thing.
What does it mean, exactly? And would 0 or 10 be more accurate?

on LG sharpness 10 is default for Filmmaker and the ISF modes and even gaming mode I think. 0 is no processing, but it does not look best for sub-4k resolutions imo. It's hard to explain, do some testing and you should decide what you like over time. Use something with static text, keeping sharpness at 0 makes some things look jagged, 10 smooths it out, sort of like anti-aliasing. With 4k sources I don't notice any change from 0 to 10 so I keep it at 0 for no processing. But some people will use sharpness 20+ even for 4k especially videogame stuff, I just don't like it. True 4k source = 0. 1080p/720p/480i/p = 10 (or higher if you prefer). The higher end LG sets from the past several years have great deinterlacing and upscaling imo.

Yes and no. On Sony sets the default "zero" setting is at 50. Going higher adds sharpening, going lower softens the image from where it should be.

If this comes true, then all Panasonic 4K Blu-ray players might be going out of production. But a decision to sell Panasonics TV business has not been made yet.

It's a shame because on the pre-4K versions of Panny's Uniphier chip they didn't overdo the subsampling or the sharpening for DVD/BD (you could set the level yourself instead of having the player's processing ladling it all on by default), they didn't have such dreadful handling of interlaced content or SD stored on BD, and they also had aspect ratio control so you could zoom a non-anamorphic DVD and whatnot. For the 4K version it's like they went "ah **** it, no one cares about that stuff any more". Eh, I do! Throw in the absolutely godawful USB file playback and it's a good job these are so tasty with 4K disc playback, otherwise I don't know why I'd bovver keeping the 820.
So it could very well be that the UB450 because of it's different (Mediatek) chip doesn't suffer from this sharpening effect?

Based on the recent financials I can see they're a profitable company, with something close to 300,000 employees. Doesn't look like "the edge of bankruptcy" to me.

However, Consumer Electronics are a pretty small part of Panasonic's revenue, and North America is a pretty small part of their global revenue as well. One could see how they may not find continuing in Consumer Electronics worth the effort. Or they could spin off their Consumer Electronics to a company that would be smaller and more focused on CE than, say, medical devices and batteries for EVs. A smaller, more focused company could be better for disk players and TV users.

Useless speculation. Maybe selling off some of the company could be good. New owners might revitalise the division.

To have the player do the upscaling, set Resolution on 4K.
Is it possible for both the player and the TV to do the upscaling? Which device take precedence when it comes to upscaling?

Think about that for a minute: If the player upscales the content to 4K, it's now at that resolution and sends it to the TV. What is the TV going to upscale?

I love the "TV-led" vs "player-led" upscalling concept.

Haha makes sense. I'm not very tech-savvy, so I thought there was a possibility of upscale also being limited and not always putting out at maximum 4K output (say 1080p bluray, but being upscaled to only 1440p rather than 2160p). But guess that's not how it work...still learning

For a newer LG it seems better to have TV-led upscaling, because if it's player-led the sharpness 10 setting doesn't work right and you will get jagged upscaled images, you need to pump it to 15 or 20 to have the same effect on an incoming 1080p-->4k image. I also don't use it but I'm pretty sure Super Resolution looks better if the TV is doing the scaling because you need to pump the sharpness past 10 anyway for it to turn on.

TVs generally only display their native resolution, so 1080p or 2160p in most cases. If you output a lower resolution to a display and the TV didn't upscale your image would be a little rectangle in the middle of the screen.
